2-3 Malcolm X

The Ballot or the Bullet

Program #XMAL003. Recorded in Detroit, MI on April 12, 1964.

Malcolm X is a singular figure in African-American history. He led an extraordinary life. He was born in an impoverished family in Omaha, NE on May 19, 1925. He recalled being “dizzy” with hunger. He said, “My whole life has been a chronology of changes.” Indeed it was. He went through a remarkable series of transformations from being a street hustler known as Detroit Red to going to jail, to converting to Islam then breaking with Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad and becoming an independent voice for black dignity, self-reliance, and economic independence. Malcolm challenged the racist white power structure and the blacks who went along with it. He was only 39 years old when he was assassinated on February 21, 1965 in New York. Maya Angelou said of him, “His aura was too bright.” He had a charismatic presence and a radiant smile. And he was an electrifying orator. At his funeral, Ossie Davis eulogized him as our “prince. Our own black shining prince.” Today, Malcolm’s autobiography continues to be read and his words continue to inspire.

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was a prominent human rights activist. To his admirers he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. In February 1965, shortly after repudiating the Nation of Islam, he was assassinated by three of its members. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published shortly after his death, is considered one of the most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century.

12-1 Dave Emory, ‘’For the Record #1217 - Fun with Rick, Steven and Donna''

Posted by Dave Emory ⋅ December 9, 2021 ⋅ Post a comment

Proof that big things can, indeed, come in small packages is Nick Turse’s impactful volume The Complex: How The Military Invades Our Everyday Lives.

Clearly written, brief and to the point, yet altogether revelatory, the book details the many ways in which what President Eisenhower termed “the military-complex” has come to dominate everyday life in the U.S. to an extent unrealized by even relatively aware citizens.

In the introduction to the book, the author presents a fictional, three-member suburban family of liberal political persuasion. Opposed to the Iraq War (the book was published in 2008), Rick, his wife Donna and their teen-age son Steven are immersed in an environment every element of which is produced by a contractor with the Department of Defense.

From their toilet articles to their workout apparel, from their electronic media devices to their sunglasses, from their footwear to the automobiles they drive, from the videogames Steven plays to the gasoline to power their cars, from their impending selections of mass transit for commuting purposes to the books they read, the inventory of their lives is produced by companies that contract with the Pentagon.

Writer Dorothy Thompson observed in 1940 (writing about the German industrialists and financiers behind the Third Reich) that, in the eyes of the Third Reich oligarchs, “economic control leads automatically to political control.”

We are of the opinion that Ms. Thompson–and the German economic titans she quotes–are correct.

It is very difficult to imagine how an entity as large and pervasive as the Pentagon and its allied interests could fail to manifest political control, following automatically on their massive economic prevalence.

1:30-2 Chris Hedges, "On Contact”

Oppenheimer and Bomb Culture

On the show, Chris Hedges discusses J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the bomb with the author Kai Bird.

J. Robert Oppenheimer, “the father of the atomic bomb,” was by the end of World War II one of the most celebrated men in America. He was instrumental, as one of the world’s leading theoretical physicists, in the massive government effort to build the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But in the post-war anti-communist hysteria he was declared a security risk because of his warnings about the use of atomic weapons and his opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb as well as the Air Force’s plans for massive strategic bombing with nuclear weapons—-plans he condemned as genocidal. He was hauled before Red-baiting congressional investigative committees, the FBI tapped his home and office phones and put him under surveillance. Scurrilous stories about his political past were planted in the press and he was put on trial, becoming America’s most prominent victim of the post-war anti-communist witch hunts. Oppenheimer was a central figure in the greatest struggles and triumphs faced by the United States in war, science, social justice and ultimately the Cold War. He oversaw the development of the most devastating weapon in human history and then spent the rest of his life warning that this weapon of indiscriminate terror did not make us safer but more vulnerable. The only effective defense against the nuclear nightmare, he said, was the elimination of nuclear weapons. For this warning he was ruthlessly silenced. “We have had the bomb on our minds since 1945,” E.L. Doctorow observed. “It was first our weaponry and then our diplomacy, and now it’s our economy. How can we suppose that something so monstrously powerful would not, after forty years, compose our identity?” The great golem we have made against our enemies is our culture—its logic, its faith, its vision.”

Kai Bird, along with Martin J. Sherwin wrote the Pulitzer-prize winning biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.”

3-4 “Destination Freedom”

African-American Civil rights dramatic anthology (1948-1950)

The triumph of African-American civil rights can be attributed to many heroes and heroines of the past. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Satchel Paige, Roscoe Dungee, Dr. Ralph Bunche, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglas, W.E.B. DuBois, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Lena Horne were all major proponents of this movement, but some never think about Richard Durham. Durham's creation put a foothold on Civil rights and paved the way for equality.

Richard Durham's Destination Freedom premiered on June 27, 1948 on Chicago radio WMAQ. Durham's vision was to reeducate the masses on the image of African American society, since it was tainted with stereotypes that threatened to tear its beautiful culture apart. The danger was so imminent, that many White Supremacy groups protested, such as the White Knights of Columbus. Week after week, Durham would generate all-out attacks on southern bias, the Ku Klux Klan, on the attitudes of rednecks and the mentality of the mob. For two straight years, Durham wrote script after script for Destination Freedom and asked for nothing in return. In 1950, Durham's financial needs exceeded his push for equality, so he opted to accept an offer by Don Ameche to write a vehicle for him. We are offering 32 half hour recreations for a $65 dollar pledge. (on one mp3CD)
