MONDAY NIGHT JUNE 26

12-1 Caroline Miller Adams, "Getting Grit"

Caroline Miller is one of the world's foremost experts in positive psychology and the author of books such as 'Creating Your Best Life' and 'My Name Is Caroline.' With Sounds True, she has recently published 'Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose.' In this episode of 'Insights at the Edge,' Tami Simon and Caroline discuss the concept of "grit"-the ability to stay passionate and persistent in one's long-term goals even in the face of considerable hardship. Caroline explains the different kinds of grit, including "false grit" that encourages stubbornness or flatters the ego. Finally, Tami and Caroline talk about the startling fact that we don't become happy when we are successful; rather, we become successful because we're happy first.

1:00-2: Linda Graham: "Cultivating Response Flexibility: Neuroscience in Psychotherapy"

Linda Graham is a trainer, life coach, author, and ardent researcher in the fields of personal growth and the life of the mind. She's the author of 'Bouncing Back: Rewiring the Brain for Maximum Resilience,' and with Sounds True will be one of the teachers in the 'Leading Edge of Psychotherapy' online course. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Linda talk about recent findings in neuroscience that psychotherapists (and their patients) will find useful in the treatment of shame and anxiety. Linda explains her view of resilience-what it means to be resilient, how to cultivate the quality, and how the brain's prefrontal cortex is "the CEO" of resilience. Finally, Linda and Tami discuss the intersection of meditation and psychotherapy, including how to reconcile their contradictory aspects through the lens of modern neuroscience.

2-3 "From the Vault," "1984" by George Orwell Part 10 of 13

This week on From the Vault, continuing one of the most important dystopian novels written in modern history, George Orwell's classic 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.'

The entire book was read on-air by longtime Pacifica morning show host Charles Morgan in 1975. Morgan was joined by legendary voiceover artist June Foray, widely known for her work in Disney and Warner Brothers animated productions - in particular as the voice of Rocky in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon. This week we present part of this thirteen-part quintessential Pacifica recording.

From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project, funded in part by an award from the GRAMMY Foundation and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission at the National Archives and Records Administration, and past grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and the American Archive funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, along with the generous support of Pacifica Radio Listeners. 3-3:30 The Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature
"City of Joy: From Pain to Power"

Women are coming together to heal in community, with hands in the soil. In one of the most broken places on the planet, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Playwright and feminist Eve Ensler's life-and-death struggle with cancer transformed her. At the heart of it was her reconnection with nature. She expanded her work to end violence against women and girls to include restoring nature and our relationship with nature. With master permaculturist Brock Dolaman, she tells the hopeful story of the Congo's V-Day Farm." From the Bioneers, 1 (877) bioneer, http://www.bioneers.org

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 28

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #959: Update on the New Cold War and the Nazification of Ukraine"

In a long series of programs and posts over the last four years, we have chronicled the re-institution of the OUN/B World War II-era fascists as the foundational element of the Ukrainian government. Of particular significance in that regard is the Nazification of the Ukrainian intelligence service, the SBU.

Among the recent developments in the operations of the OUN/B-related elements in Ukraine is the posting of a call for the eradication of Ukraine's Jews.

The call for a new Holocaust in Ukraine was made by Vasily Vovk - a senior officer in the SBU, former head of the SBU's investigative unit and head of the SBU's investigation into the MH17 probe. (Vovk's pronouncement casts further doubt over the MH17investigation.)

The SBU is also implicated in the bombing assassination of journalist Pavel Sheremet.

Next, we cover the latest attempt by Volodomyr Viatrovych and Ukraine's Institute of National Memory to purify Ukraine of any memories that might portray "nationalist" groups like the UPA (the military wing of the OUN/B) as a bunch of Nazi collaborators: Ukraine is investigating a 94-year-old Jewish WWII hero over the death of a UPA propagandist/Nazi collaborator back in 1952 while he was working for the NKVD at the recommendation of Viatrovych as part of a package of new decommunisation laws.

Viatrovych heads the institute for National Memory, the Ukrainian government agency that is implementing the total perversion of Ukraine's World War II history. The excesses of his department are being created under the aegis of "decommunisation."

"Decommunisation" isn't just going to cover investigations of Soviety-era incidents. As the following interview grimly describes, everyone is a potential target in Ukraine. And "decommunisation", or simply being associated with anything 'Russian' at all, is enough to bring violence or worse.

We then highlight an article about the anti-Roma pogrom that was just implemented by a small village and apparently approved of by the rest of the government. The article was written by a journalist who traveled to that region and queried the locals about their views of the Roma. Almost everyone he talked to hate the Roma with a passion. It also turns out most of them had little to no actual contact with their fellow Roma citizens, at least not knowingly since many Roma hide their ethnicity due to rampant job discrimination.

Most locals simply parroted the anti-Roma lessons they were taught as children. Anti-Roma Lessons that are even found in Ukrainian textbooks. It comes as no surprise that the Azov Battalion is joining in on creating a climate of fear and intimidation.

Next, we note that Ukraine is set to be the world's third largest food exporter some time in the next decade due to its incredibly productive arable land. This is undoubtedly a major factor in the push to incorporate Ukraine into the Western sphere of influence.

1-2 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
'Hitler's American Model' & 'Pluralist Commonwealth'

James Q. Whitman is the Ford Foundation Professor of Comparative and Foreign Law at Yale Law School. His subjects are comparative law, criminal law, and legal history. His books include 'Harsh Justice, The Origins of Reasonable Doubt,' 'The Verdict of Battle' and the book we're going to be discussing today, 'Hitler's American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law.'

"It's regarded as deeply unacceptable for most Germans in most social and intellectual circles to suggest that there was any kind of shared responsibility for the Nazi crimes. Now, I don't think there was any shared responsibility. My concern is with America's responsibility and not with Germany's. My concern is that the Germans will think that I am somehow trying to deflect responsibility for Nazi crimes from the Germans themselves. And that I don't mean to do." James Q. Whitman, author of 'Hitler's American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law'

Gar Alperovitz is an historian, political economist, activist, writer, and government official. In addition to a distinguished career in academia, he is also the president of the National Center for Economic and Security Alternatives and is a co-founder of the Democracy Collaborative, a research institution developing practical, policy-focused, and systematic paths towards ecologically sustainable, community-oriented change and the democratization of wealth. His latest project is called the "Pluralist Commonwealth", which is an economic model that is neither traditional corporate capitalism nor traditional state socialism.

"It's time to build new economic institutions that are democratic but also -critically- give us a new power base as well in the communities around the country." Gar Alperovitz on the New Economy Movement

2-2:30 Richard Grossman - "Dismantling Corporations" (ONE of TWO)
By Maria Gilardin April 4, 2017

Ralph Nader called Richard Grossman the preeminent historian of corporations. In his writings and teaching Grossman warned us that unchecked corporate power would lead to the destruction of democracy. He said that the American revolution was fought less against the King but "against the crown corporations, the Hudson's Bay and East India Corporations." And he believed that it is time to remember that fight and assert sovereignty of the people over corporations and the corporate state.

In this speech Grossman provocatively calls for dismantling "the thousand largest corporations off the face of the earth."

Richard Grossman's research showed him that in the original intent of American revolutionaries corporations did not have rights, they only had privileges, and only those that we the people bestow on them. They were to be limited by a revocable charter that specified what they were allowed to do; it's board and officers were to be fully liable for any harms the corporation did; and they initially had none of the free speech rights that go along with person-hood.

If Richard Grossman were still alive today in 2017 he would be shocked to see that corporations and bankers from Exxon to Goldman Sachs, from General Dynamics to Lockheed Martin, from Wells Fargo to pipeline builder Energy Transfer, no longer are limited to purchasing influence by buying congress people one by one - but now own and run large parts of the government directly. From TUC Radio http://www.tucradio.org

2:30-3 Richard Grossman - "Dismantling Corporations" (TWO of TWO)
This segment begins with an intriguing archival speech on the history of corporations that TUC Radio recorded in Washington DC. at the 1996 Teach-In organized by the International Forum on Globalization. The segment ends with two important projects Grossman worked on just before his death: A law to criminalize hydro-fracking and corporations as a class or group.

In the Preface to his 1993 pamphlet, 'Taking Care of Business,' Richard Grossman wrote:

"Corporations cause harm every day. Why do their harms go unchecked? How can they dictate what we produce, how we work, what we eat, drink and breathe? How did a self-governing people let this come to pass? - Corporations were not supposed to reign in the United States."

Richard died of cancer on November 22nd, 2011 - he was only sixty-eight. He was one of the lucid people who first described not just the history of corporations but the now global challenge to democracy and personal and state sovereignty that they pose.
date recorded 9/15/1996 From TUC Radio, http://www.tucradio.org

3-3:30 Michael Parenti: "Capitalism's Apocalypse"
'Why the rich can't save anybody - not even themselves'

Parenti predicted the financial crisis and said that giant corporate capitalism - by it's very nature - is an apocalyptic system. When unregulated the built in elements of ever increased growth may well bring the whole system down. And he described the growing national debt not as a tragic mistake but as a means to shift ever more money from the tax payers to the financial institutions in the form of interest payments. This speech is an analysis of the many structural flaws of a capitalist system that puts it on a permanent collision course with democracy. www.michaelparenti.org<http://www.michaelparenti.org>

Recorded on August 23, 2008 at the closing reception for Maria Gilardin's art show. This rebroadcast, made in June 2017, is eerily contemporary and lends a historic perspective to current events. www.tucradio.org<http://www.tucradio.org>

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 21

12-1 Dave Emory, “For the Record #72 - More Discussion With Martin A. Lee”
This program begins with an analysis of connections between the Reinhard Gehlen Nazi spy organization and Gerhard Frey, a German fascist who was a major financier of the rise of Russian fascist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The segments also touch on Nazi agent H. Keith Thompson’s role as the P.R. person for Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother after the assassination of President Kennedy.

Much of the program focuses on the exploitation of the issue of immigration by neo-fascists around the world, as well as similarities between European neo-fascists and their counterparts in the United States. The broadcast also highlights attempts by American fascists to appear to be “Christians” or “conservatives” in order to broaden their political appeal. One of the most important points of discussion concerns the revival of the fascist pseudo-science of eugenics, exemplified by the mainstream backing for and acceptance of the racist best-seller 'The Bell Curve.'

1-2 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
Ralph has a fascinating conversation with author Duff McDonald about how business schools like Harvard are producing graduates who are nothing more than “heat seeking money missiles.” And muckraking journalist, Roldo Bartimole, tells us how billionaire sports team owners extort money from a city’s taxpayers.

Duff McDonald is an award winning journalist, who has been a contributing editor at “New York,” “Fortune,” and “The New York Observer” as well as writing for many other publications. He is also the author of The Firm: The Story of McKinsey & Its Secret Influence on American Business and Last Man Standing, a biography of JP Morgan CEO, Jamie Dimon. Mr. McDonald’s latest book is The Golden Passport: Harvard Business School, the Limits of Capitalism, and the Moral Failure of the MBA Elite.

Roldo Bartimole has been called a lot of things in his career, “gadfly,” “muckraker,” “curmudgeon,” “The Conscience of Cleveland.” Cleveland Magazine called him “the poor man’s Tom Paine.” He is a journalist, who for over thirty years put out his own bi-weekly newsletter called, “Point of View,” which took a critical look at the power structure in Cleveland, reporting on the wealthy’s control of the city’s agenda to the detriment of its working-class and poor residents.

2-3 Noam Chomsky "Neoliberalism: An Accounting"
Recorded in Amherst, MA on April 13, 2017.

Neoliberalism is an odd term when you think about it. It is hardly new and it is not particularly liberal. It has been a great economic success story-for the 1%. The detritus of neoliberalism litters the landscape from smashed unions to shredded safety nets, and deregulation of everything from airlines to banking to telecommunications. And how does one measure the human costs of shattered dreams and broken lives? The consequence? A backlash. Many working people are angry. Keep squeezing them and they will be prey for charlatans and demagogues who exploit their vulnerability and fear with scapegoating and false promises. As The Nation magazine observes, “Alongside growing economic inequality, we have suffered growing political inequality, with a Princeton study declaring that the influence of ordinary citizens on policy is ‘negligible.’ The United States,” The Nation says, is becoming “an oligarchy.”

Noam Chomsky, by any measure, has led a most extraordinary life. In one index he is ranked as the eighth most cited person in history, right up there with Aristotle, Shakespeare, Marx, Plato and Freud. The legendary MIT professor practically invented modern linguistics. In addition to his pioneering work in that field he has been a leading voice for peace and social justice for many decades. Chris Hedges says he is “America’s greatest intellectual” who “makes the powerful, as well as their liberal apologists, deeply uncomfortable.” At 88, he still gives lectures all over the world. He is the author of scores of books, including Propaganda & the Public Mind, How the World Works, and Power Systems with David Barsamian. 3-4 "From the Vault," "1984" by George Orwell Part 9 of 13

This week on From the Vault, continuing one of the most important dystopian novels written in modern history, George Orwell's classic ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four.’

This week we present part 9 of this thirteen-part quintessential Pacifica recording.

12:30-3:30 Kat Duff "Dark Heart of Healing: A Pursuit of the Greater Truths About Life, Death, and Illness"

"God's deepest mystery, wrote Paracelsus, concerns how life springs from death and decay. In 'Dark Hert of Healing,' author Kat Duff reveals how illness and the underworld from which it springs can become 'the midwife of very great things.' The survivor of a debilitating disease, she conducts a guided tour of the 'underworld of illness' - a terra incognito that gleams with the miraculous treasure of which Jung, the alchemists, and 'The Book of Job' all speak. Through a detailed discussion of dream work, self-diagnosistic writing, and meditation, you will learn to tap the wisdom hidden in the symptoms of illness. 'Dark Heart of Healing' is a thoughtful, revealing journey to the 'shadow' side of wellness that bravely confronts conventional thinking about how we heal.

"Includes: Your #1 tool for fighting illness; the ancient roots of healing; exercises for self-healing; understanding negative reactions in others; facing yourself in illness; inner peace and the two levels of pain; self-diagnostic healing; much more."

Originally from Sounds True but not in current catalog.

"Kat Duff is the author of 'The Secret Life of Sleep' (March 2014) and 'The Alchemy of Illness' . She writes at the intersection of the natural world and the human imagination as it occurs in our everyday experiences, and maintains a blog at SecretLifeOfSleep.com. She lives in northern New Mexico where she works as a counselor."

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 14

12-1 Dave Emory, “For the Record #71 “Martin A. Lee Live (Originally broadcast in 1997)

The latest program recorded is FTR #959 Update on the New Cold War and the Nazification of Ukraine which will be broadcast here after Martin Lee’s ‘Introduction’ series.

NB: Mr. Emory is putting the finishing touches on AFA #39, Titled “The World Will be Plunged into an Abyss . . .” . For The Record production will resume. Listeners are strongly encouraged to listen to four interviews with Martin A. Lee, author of “The Beast Reawakens.” Recorded 20 years ago, they are more relevant than ever.

“The Beast Reawakens,” Lee’s landmark book about the re-emergence of fascism (The Beast Reawakens; hardcover edition Little Brown; copyright 1997) is the focal point of this broadcast. Much of the early part of the discussion centers on fascism and the former Soviet Union. In addition to a detailed discussion of the traditional German stratagem of aligning with Russia in order to achieve global domination, the program discusses fascist movements and personalities in various parts of the former Soviet Union.

The program also sets forth some of the new forms that fascist movements in various countries have adopted, in order to appear to be “populist” and even “democratic.” European neo-fascists, such as Jean Thiriart, Alain de Benoist and exponents of the “third position,” structure their political agenda to appeal to people from the “progressive” political sector.

Other topics of discussion include: Nazi and fascist connections and operations in the Middle East; the Conservative Revolution in Weimar Germany and its influence on the rise of Hitler; H. Keith Thompson (an agent of the SD, the SS intelligence service, and the ODESSA during and after World War II); the rise of the Liberty Lobby and its connections with people like Nazi ideologue Francis Parker Yockey; connections between the “Old Guard” of the Hitler period and contemporary Nazis.

Dave Emory’s entire lifetime of work is available on a flash drive. The new drive is a 32-gigabyte drive that is current as of the programs and articles posted by early 2016. Link: http://www.kfjc.org/donate/index.php

2-3 Naomi Klein: “No Is Not Enough”
Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need

A one hour speech by Naomi Klein about her June 2017 book, ‘No Is Not Enough.’ It was specifically written as response to what she describes as Donald Trump’s corporate political takeover.

In spite of her scathing criticism Naomi Klein writes with an empowering optimism: She says that “Trump is making the need for systemic change seem much more obvious and appealing. “The No to Trump, she says, may be what brings people into the streets, but the Yes keeps us together into the future.

Her new book, ‘No Is Not Enough,’ shows how to define that YES and what she calls the resurgence of the utopian imagination. Naomi Klein describes in detail the Canadian effort by 60 movement leaders and organizers to write the Leap Manifesto. They met for two days in September 2015. In what they admit were difficult negotiations they agreed on 15 demands. They can be found on the web site: leapmanifesto.org

The award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist, film maker and author Naomi Klein was the keynote speaker at the Living Future conference in Seattle, WA, on March 19, 2017.

We ended our fund drive with an unofficial total of approximately $693,000, a great success, extra bucks, but with an extended time frame. We're looking forward to fewer days in fundraising and are paying lots of bills to keep going strong with a majority National and Local board which is truly progressive and more firmly armed against the privatization forces. Giant thank you to those of you who could contribute and giant kudos to our phone corps - particularly those who put in morning after morning after morning: Barbara Flasher, John B., Bill St. Bernard (the breed he rescues) and our administrator/cameraman/pitcher/producer/Local Board Member Buzz and love to Diane who made the fundraising easier and more productive (and also answered phones).

Bad news and good news:

"The Withered Arm" was the last NBC University Theater broadcast and thus the end of our broadcasting of all the existent Peabody Award-Winning NBC University Theater programs. HOWEVER, during the years we have been broadcasting this entire series in order of original dates of broadcast, three more shows have been discovered, so we will be broadcasting all three, with the first of them on tonight!

3-3:30 "The Withered Arm" by Thomas Hardy. A story of witchcraft on the moors of Southern England. Adaptation by Ernest Kinoy. Originally broadcast February 14, 1951. (produced in 30 minute format)

3:30-4:30 "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis.
As the first American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, Sinclair Lewis is the realist; the photographer whose lens presented America to Americans with a sharpness that made them angry, amused, self-critical, and ashamed; made them accept his hatreds and his loves. With Vanessa Brown and Leon Ames. Originally broadcast July 30, 1948. (not great sound quality)

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 7

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #70: Interview with Martin A. Lee"
Author of "The Beast Reawakens" (Describing 2007 from 1997)

The latest program recorded is FTR #959 'Update on the New Cold War and the Nazification of Ukraine' (Audio File Only–Written Description Will Be Available Presently)

Mr. Emory is putting the finishing touches on AFA #39, Titled “The World Will be Plunged into an Abyss . . .” . For The Record production will resume this week. Listeners are strongly encouraged to listen to four interviews with Martin A. Lee, author of “The Beast Reawakens.” Recorded 20 years ago, they are more relevant than ever.

"Fighting Fascism." This interview delves into the subject material of Martin A. Lee’s opus 'The Beast Reawakens' (hard-cover, Little Brown, copyright 1997.) In addition to substantive discussion of the Reinhard Gehlen spy outfit, the program sets forth the reciprocal relationship between that organization and the ODESSA.

Gehlen was Hitler’s top intelligence officer, having been in charge of intelligence for the Eastern front. After the war, Gehlen and his organization jumped, in turn, to the CIA, NATO and the Federal Republic of Germany. The ODESSA (the post-war SS underground and support organization) recruited for the Gehlen organization and was nourished by it.

Other major points touched on in the program include: the re-institution of Nazi elements at all levels of post-war German society; the ODESSA’s close collaboration with Soviet intelligence during the Cold War; the re-emergence of fascism in Germany following re-unification; Germany’s renewed drive for European domination and empire; the pivotal role of Germany in promoting the breakup of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia; the parallel and overlapping agendas of so-called neo-Nazis and the Kohl government in Germany; the German tradition of alignment with Russia as a stratagem for effecting global domination; the “mainstreaming” of fascism in contemporary European society and the parallels between European neo-fascists such as Jörg Haider (Austria) and Jean-Marie Le Pen (France) and “respectable” politicians like Newt Gingrich.

Alan Hirsch is a Lecturer in Humanities and Chair of Justice and Law Studies at Williams College. He is the author of "For the People: What the Constitution Really Says About Your Rights and “A Citizen’s Guide to Impeachment,” a forty page handbook in question and answer format that is everything you ever wanted to know about the impeachment process but didn’t know to ask.

2-4 "The Politics and Economics of a Decaying Order"
Recorded May 11, 2017 at UCLA

What are the prospects for a new emancipatory politics that speaks to
the needs of working people, at a time when the hardline neo-liberal
leaderships of the Democrat and Republican parties and of the top
financial and non-financial corporations have set themselves implacably
against the populist and radical insurgencies that have recently shaken
the American political order? Vivek Chibber will consider the political
parties, organizations, mass movements, and ideologies – of both the
right and the left – that are seeking to exploit the political
openings that have emerged since the onset of the Great Recession in
2008. He is the author of "Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of
Capital" (2013). Robert Brenner will trace the processes of American
decline and global crisis that have driven the intensifying employers’
offensive and the profound plunge of mass living standards over the past
four decades. He is the author of 'What’s Good for Goldman Sachs is
Good for America' (2009).

The speakers are the editors of the new political journal "Catalyst: A
Journal of Theory and Strategy."
