MONDAY NIGHT,, NOVEMBER 28
12-2 Danny Sheehan “Trajectory of Justice” Course:
5-5-2015: ‘’4th Amendment – Protection from Illegal Search and Seizure’’
This lecture covered the Fourth Amendment—the protection from illegal search and seizure—and its relation to Authoritarian (1st Paradigm), Reactionary (2nd Paradigm), Moderate (4th Paradigm), and Progressive (6th Paradigm) worldviews. Law enforcement officials are always functioning from an Authoritarian perspective as they view Constitutional Rights as impediments to carrying out their duties.
The Reactionary perspective is consistently trying to frame Constitutional Rights in an Authoritarian perspective—constantly attempting to further limit our rights.
Progressives rely on Constitutional Rights to protect them from Authoritarian control.
Moderates limit Constitutional Rights by creating exceptions (conceptual devices), which, specifically for the Fourth Amendment, consist of:Consensual Searches
Vehicle Searches
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance
Protection of a Law Enforcement Officer
Unfortunately, the interpretation of such exceptions often further reduces our access to protect ourselves from illegal search and seizure.
Professor Sheehan used his involvement with the Attica Prison Riots to illustrate the use of the Fourth Amendment.

2-3 Vijay Prashad, ‘’History Lessons Part 2’’
Program #PRAV006. Recorded in Santiago, Chile on November 3, 2022.
Is history just a bunch of innocuous cold facts and dates? Or is it something more? What can we learn from the past? History is not neutral. It’s an ideological battleground. Witness the vitriolic attacks by establishment figures on those who want a reckoning of African American slavery. They want to obfuscate that sordid history. Or take the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983. What was that about? Or the CIA coup in Chile? Gee, never read about that in school. Elites can lie outright about history. Or they can omit facts that might lead to inconvenient conclusions. The rulers want to keep to their sanitized version of the past and maintain myths about enlightened leaders. Sure, here and there a few bad apples made mistakes but they were the exception, not the rule. Were they? Interviewed by David Barsamian
Vijay Prashad is an internationally renowned historian and journalist. He is the director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and chief correspondent for Globetrotter. He is the author of many books including The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World and Washington Bullets: CIA, Coups, and Assassinations. From Alternative Radio, 1 (800) 444-1977, www.alternativeradio.org.
3-4 SCHOLARS’ CIRCLE – FINANCING US POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS BY SUPER RICH ; CIVIL WAR BY OTHER MEANS, UNRESOLVED POLITICS CONTINUES TODAY – NOVEMBER 20, 2022
PUBLISHED ON NOVEMBER 20, 2022 BY HOST
Americans in polls consistently cite the nature of campaign financing as perhaps the greatest threat to democracy. And increasingly, candidates self-finance. In the LA Mayor’s race alone, billionaire developer Rick Caruso spent at least $100 million of his own fortune. What legal issues does this sort of financing raise? What does it mean for candidate quality? In what ways does it challenge and potentially undermine democracy? [ dur: 28 mins. ]Eugene D. Mazo is Visiting Professor of Law at Seton Hall University School of Law. He is the author of The Best Candidate: Presidential Nomination in Polarized Times, Democracy by the People: Reforming Campaign Finance in America and co-author of Democracy by the Wealthy: Campaign Finance Reform as the Issue of Our Time.
While the US Civil War ended slavery, it didn’t end the political issues that caused the war. What exactly happened in the immediate aftermath of the war?
The political divide in the US from the Civil War persists today. We discuss the history of the period and its impact on contemporary politics with the author of the new book by Jeremi Suri,Civil War by Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight For Democracy . [ dur: 30 mins. ]Jeremi Suri is Professor in the Department of History and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, Austin. WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 30
12-1 Dave Emory, “For the Record 1265, Interview #4 with Jim Di Eugenio about ‘JFK Revisited”
Continuing our discussion with Jim DiEugenio about JFK Revisited, we begin with analysis of comparison between the “stab in the back” hypothesis floated by reactionaries in Weimar Germany, denying that they lost World War I, with similar revisionism floated by the right wing concerning America’s defeat in Vietnam.
Bridging discussion that will be continued in our previous program, we note a key quote from the book and documentary by Lisa Pease, noting that JFK stood apart from the Eisenhower/Dulles view that non-alignment among the former colonial territories that achieved independence was the equivalent of pro-Communist orientation.
JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass by Jim DiEugenio; Skyhorse Publishing [HC]; Copyright 2022 by Jim DiEugenio; ISBN 978–1‑5107–7287‑8; p. 352.
. . . . Lisa Pease: His [JFK’s] approach was a radical break from his predecessor. In an oral history interview that Sukarno gave after John Kennedy’s death, he said words to the effect that what made Kennedy special is that he believed non-alignment was not amoral as it had been under John Foster Dulles. I thought that was an interesting way of putting it. . . .
Exemplifying Kennedy’s understanding of how nationalist aspirations were at the forefront of struggles for national independence that were cast into the annihilating Cold War meatgrinder, we detail his trip to Indochina, where he networked with French generals, who told him that France was winning its struggle against the Viet Minh, and then with State Department professional Edmund Gullion, who opined that France was losing the war and would, in the end, lose.
Gullion also told Kennedy that, if the U.S. got involved, it would lose as well. It was Gullion’s conviction that the Vietnamese peoples’ desire for independence trumped anything the West could do.
We note that roughly 80% of the budget of the French war effort was bankrolled by the U.S. We also note that there was a contingency plan developed for a massive U.S. air support operation on behalf of the French called “Operation Vulture.” Part of that plan was the deployment of three atomic bombs for use against the Vietnamese.
For more about Kennedy’s early education about the realities of war in Southeast Asia, see—among other programs, FTR#1031…
The program concludes with discussion of JFK’s policies with regard to Africa, the Congo in particular. This topic is presented at greater length in our next interview with Jim.

1-2 Insights at the Edge: Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’”
“Mending the World with a Prophetic Voice”. (Nov. 22, 2022
Every spiritual tradition teaches that we are all interconnected. Yet when we are faced with the world’s many injustices, we often want to turn away and isolate ourselves rather than feel the full measure of our grief, anger, and fear. In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg about how we can choose another path—one of openly encountering others with deep connection,
accessing our prophetic voice to speak truth to power, and taking action while staying grounded in our spiritual selves.
Give a listen to this moving conversation exploring connecting to “the still, small voice” within yourself; Rabbi Nachman’s practice of the inner scream; allowing our bodies and hearts to process what we see in the world; our obligations as bystanders of harm; leaving your “spiritual bubble” to engage in real activism; speaking uncomfortable truths; the five steps involved in the work of repentance and repair; why the best spiritual practice is done in community; the practice of rest as a social justice issue; prayer, the work of the heart; and much more.
