BEHIND THE SCENES


KPFK is operating in a 'hard shutdown' meaning that only the minimum necessary people are entering the premises. Programmers, when possible, are sending in their programs via computer or CD and when they are live-in-studio are discouraged from bringing in friends, fans, and family. Diane and I are continuing living at home and not going out anywhere and not seeing anyone. It is a strange change but we are happy being with each other and we are staying healthy. Buzz continues to board op and co-produce the program which is pleasurable hard work.

This conversation took place on April 4, 2020. A world renowned artist, Brian Eno, and the former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, are raising questions about the social and cultural consequences of the corona pandemic. Will we be able to design the future of a new civilization or will politicians and corporations hold on to the extraordinary powers they now have taken.






Brian Eno is an English musician, record producer, visual artist, best known for his pioneering work in ambient music and contributions to rock, pop, and electronics. He is also a member of the British Labour Party and campaigned door to door for Jeremy Corbyn.






Yanis Varoufakis was an internationally known economist and academic when he was elected to the Greek parliament as a member of the Syriza party. He served as Minister of Finance in 2015. And resigned when Syriza broke its promise to re-negotiate Greece’s debt and curtail the austerity measures which had led to the longest recession in post-war history.






In February 2016, Varoufakis co-founded the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) joined by notables such as Noam Chomsky and Brian Eno. To this day DiEM25 fights to democratize the European Union and stop the rise of fascism in some EU member states.






Brian Eno and Yanis Varoufakis were sheltering in place in their homes in England and Greece. They spoke via a scratchy internet connection on DiEMTV – that’s archived on YouTube. They call DiEMTV “our media playground, away from the mass media dictatorship. This is our stage, your home, our news stand.”

For the millions of people who are following the daily reports and analyses of the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing should be evident. There are far more questions arising than answers, and there are certainly less answers to be relied upon. Consequently, we are being inundated with numbers and more numbers. The number of cases of infection. The number of tests performed or that should be performed. The number of masks, hospital beds and ventilators necessary. And the number of fatalities. Consider the early predictions made by NIAID director Anthony Fauci that we might expect 1.7 million deaths only to later reduce his numbers to that of a regular flu season. Or there is one of the nation’s chief physicians serving Congress and the Supreme Court, Dr. Brian Monahan, who pulled unsubstantiated figures from the astral plane to warn NBC News that up to 150 million Americans will become infected.


Moreover, confusion seems to be rampant throughout much of the nation’s healthcare infrastructure. We are being deprived of basic facts because even the experts don’t have them. Perhaps we have all seen the images of medical personnel having to wear black garbage bags as protective gear in a New York hospital or nurses’ reports about having to wash and share face masks due to shortages. One revelation that COVID-19 is mirroring back to us is dire state of our corporate healthcare system and the dearth of doctors compared to other developed nations. But should we be surprised about the failures of American medicine? Funding that should go towards a resilient medical infrastructure and preventative health measures in times of emergency has been neglected for decades. If the nation’s healthcare infrastructure had progressed to meet its population’s demand it would have lessened the pandemic significantly. Instead the US budget has been funneled off to sustain our imperialist military adventures and provide bailouts for the mega-transnational corporations, banks and billionaires.

While the public’s attention was focused on the impeachment proceedings, highly suspicious information surfaced involving the finances of “Team Trump,” Deutsche Bank, ostensible “suicides,” and apparent destruction of financial records.


With the failure of a Trump filing in appeals court, this concatenation appears to be headed to the Supreme Court, where both Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh clerked for former Justice Anthony Kennedy. (Kavanaugh took Kennedy’s seat.)


During the confirmation hearings of both judges, none of the occupants of the Democratic Senatorial Clown Car brought up the fact that Justice Kennedy’s son Justin was in charge of Deutsche Bank’s real estate lending department when the institution was Trump’s only lender. Justin Kennedy also had strong professional transactions with Jared Kushner’s real estate operations, as well.


Thomas Bowers–a key Deutsche Bank official involved with Donald Trump’s dealings with the bank–allegedly committed suicide in late November of 2019, as “The Donald” attempted to keep his financial records from Congressional investigators. ” Thomas Bowers, identified as a former Deutsche Bank executive who signed off on controversial loans to President Donald Trump, died last week after apparently taking his own life at 55.. . . . ‘One source who has direct knowledge of the FBI’s investigation into Deutsche Bank said that federal investigators have asked about Bowers and documents he might have. Another source who has knowledge of Deutsche Bank’s internal structure said that Bowers would have been the gatekeeper for financial documents for the bank’s wealthiest customers.’ . . . .”


In addition to Mr. Bowers, a Deutsche Bank executive named William Broeksmit allegedly committed suicide in 2014. His son, Val, has given the FBI documents involving the bank’s dealings with Team Trump. “Federal authorities are investigating whether Deutsche Bank complied with laws meant to stop money laundering and other crimes, the latest government examination of potential misconduct at one of the world’s largest and most troubled banks . . . . The investigation includes a review of Deutsche Bank’s handling of so-called suspicious activity reports that its employees prepared about possibly problematic transactions, including some linked to President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner . . . . The same federal agent who contacted Ms. McFadden’s lawyer also participated in interviews of the son of a deceased Deutsche Bank executive, William S. Broeksmit. . . . . . . . F.B.I. agents met this year with Val Broeksmit, whose father was a senior Deutsche Bank executive who committed suicide in January 2014. Mr. Broeksmit said he had provided the agents with internal bank documents and other materials that he had retrieved from his father’s personal email accounts. . . .”






Program Highlights Include: Discussion of the alleged “suicide” of Calogero Gambino, a Deutsche Bank attorney; the fact that Anthony Kennedy only agreed to resign after he was assured that Brett Kavanaugh would be named as his replacement.
