1:30-2:30 Chris Hedges "Stopping Fascism"
Recorded in Portland, OR on May 26, 2017.
This is a rebroadcast of this talk, and it was featured a second time by Alternative Radio, so extraordinarily powerful is this presentation - even for Chris Hedges.

One dictionary defines fascism as, “A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism.” The first fascist party was founded by Mussolini in Italy in 1915. Its etymology is traced to the Latin word meaning a bundle of rods tied around an axe, an ancient Roman symbol of authority. Today, the term, for many, immediately conjures up horrific images of storm troopers. But contemporary fascism has undergone a major wardrobe change. Could it happen here? Some see elements of it now with what is called populism, America First, coupled with a largely imagined past, Make America Great Again. The media are denounced as “the enemy of the people,” a phrase Stalin used. Critics of the Leader are bullied and insulted.

Chris Hedges is an award-winning journalist who has covered wars in the Balkans, the Middle East and Central America. He writes a weekly column for Truthdig.com and is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute. He is the author of many books including 'Empire of Illusion,' 'Death of the Liberal Class,' 'The World As It Is,' and 'Wages of Rebellion.'

2:30-3:30 "From the Vault," "1984" by George Orwell Part 13 (conclusion)
This week on From the Vault, continuing one of the most important dystopian novels written in modern history, George Orwell's classic ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four.’
The entire book was read on-air by longtime Pacifica morning show host Charles Morgan in 1975. Morgan was joined by legendary voiceover artist June Foray, widely known for her work in Disney and Warner Brothers animated productions - in particular as the voice of Rocky in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon. This week we present part of this thirteen-part quintessential Pacifica recording.
From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project, funded in part by an award from the GRAMMY Foundation and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission at the National Archives and Records Administration, and past grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and the American Archive funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, along with the generous support of Pacifica Radio Listeners. We also thank our partners and collaborators at the Pop-Up Archive, Amara, Other Minds Archives, George Blood Audio, and the California Audio Visual Preservation Project. Reading produced by Paul Vangelisti. ‘From the Vault’ Produced by Mark Torres.

12:30-3:30 Judith Orloff, MD, "The Ecstasy of Letting Go"
'Surrender Practices to Empower Your Life'

We often think “surrender” means defeat—yet Dr. Judith Orloff has learned that surrender is the key to a powerful, effective, joyous way of being. “Surrender allows us to let go of our compulsion to over-think, doubt our intuition, and hold back from our complete experience of living,” teaches Dr. Orloff. With 'The Ecstasy of Letting Go,' she presents a practice-based audio to help us apply the insights of her bestseller 'The Ecstasy of Surrender' to our everyday lives. In these two audio sessions, Dr. Orloff offers essential insights and guided practices for:

Releasing fear and judgment to build authentic self-esteem
Receiving clear intuitive and emotional signals
Enhancing relationships and attracting your soul mate
Discovering your destiny—surrender as a path to success
Our fear of losing control of life is based on the belief that we are in control. As Dr. Orloff reveals, “Letting go of this illusion leads us naturally to a state of joy—and into an ecstatic connection with ourselves, the natural world, and each other.” Join this renowned teacher for step-by-step guidance in the transformative art of surrendering to the flow of life with 'The Ecstasy of Letting Go.'

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JULY 26
Happy Birthday KPFK! 1959-2017 = 58 years old!

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #963 - Watergate and the Assassination of President Kennedy, Part 3"

As comparisons between the Watergate scandal and “Russia-gate” saturate the media (in the summer of 2017), the program reviews information about connections between the Watergate scandal and the assassination of President Kennedy. Nixon told aides that he didn’t want to release the White House tape recordings because he was afraid “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” might come out. Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman said in his book “The Ends of Power” that “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” was a code word in the Nixon White House for the assassination of President Kennedy. (It should be remembered that Nixon was in Dallas on 11/22/63, yet he told the FBI in February of 1964 that he had left Dallas two days prior to Kennedy’s assassination.)

When interviewed by the Warren Commission, Jack Ruby indicated that he had been part of a conspiracy to kill Kennedy and that he feared for his life. The Warren Commission turned a deaf ear to his desire to go to Washington and “spill the beans.” Gerald Ford (who succeeded Nixon as President and pardoned him of all crimes committed), Leon Jaworski (a Warren Commission counsel who was a director of a CIA domestic funding conduit and who was selected by Nixon to be Watergate Special Prosecutor) and Arlen Specter (another Warren Commission counsel who was Nixon’s first choice as his personal defense attorney in the Watergate affair.) were present at Ruby’s de facto confession.

It is interesting to contemplate the text of a letter that Jack Ruby smuggled out of prison. In the letter, Ruby hints that Nazis and Japanese fascists participated in the assassination of President Kennedy. Certainly, elements of what were to become the World Anti-Communist League (including the Asian Peoples Anti-Communist League) were involved...

1-2 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour (catch up) "Draft Bernie for a People's Party."

Nick Brana joins us to discuss his efforts to "Draft Bernie for a People's Party;" and economist Ben Zipperer explains how, contrary to conventional wisdom, raising the minimum wage will not result in significant job loss.
Nick Brana was the National Political Outreach Coordinator on Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign through the 2016 Democratic National Convention and went on to become a founding member of "Our Revolution." He is the founder and director at "Draft Bernie for a People's Party."

"The American people are progressive, and they're ready for political change. And representatives in Washington of both parties - the Democrats and Republicans - do not represent what it is that the American people want to see. And so that's kind of the starting intellectual foundation for this." Nick Brana founder of "Draft Bernie for a People's Party."

Ben Zipperer is an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. His areas of expertise include the minimum wage, inequality, and low-wage labor markets. Prior to that, Dr. Zipperer was research economist at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth. He is a senior research associate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research and a research associate at the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics at the University of California, Berkeley.

The skeptics of minimum wage increases have been consistently shown to be wrong by very careful economic research... minimum wages - at least the kinds typically passed in the United States - tend to do their job. And what I mean by that is they tend to raise the wages of low wage workers and give them higher income; and they do so with very little to no negative costs in terms of employment losses." Ben Zipperer economist at the Economic Policy Institute

2-3 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour (latest) "A More Progressive Economic Agenda"
Distinguished economist, Robert Pollin, joins us to share his ideas on a progressive more egalitarian economic agenda. And Dr. Steffie Woolhandler tells us why doctors and other health professionals want a single-payer, Medicare for All healthcare system.
Robert Pollin is a Distinguished Professor of Economics and co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst. He is the author of many books on economics including Back to Full Employment and Greening the Global Economy.

“There’s no evidence that countries that have “more flexible (labor) markets” – meaning fewer social protections – perform better, even by standard measures like GDP. This has become one of the myths around globalization: that the only way under a globalized setting countries could compete is by worsening conditions for ordinary people.” Robert Pollin: co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute

Dr. Steffie Woolhandler is a practicing primary care physician, distinguished professor of public health and health policy in the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health at Hunter College, adjunct clinical professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and lecturer in medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Woolhandler is a co-founder and board member of Physicians for a National Health Program, which is a non-profit research and education organization of 20,000 physicians, medical students and health professionals, who support single-payer national health insurance.

“Medicare for All would mean that everybody on the day they were born would get an insurance card that would pay for all medically needed care at the doctor or hospital of their choice. For doctors it would mean that everybody came with the same coverage; and we no longer had to worry about would the patient come back to see us for follow-up or would they decide that’s just too expensive… that’s not pie in the sky. That is the way that the single–payer systems work in countries like Canada or Scotland.” Dr. Steffie Woolhandler: co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program

3-3:30 The Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature
Terry Tempest Williams: "A Love That Is Wild: Why Wilderness Matters in the 21st Century"
What might a different kind of power look and feel like, and can power be redistributed equitably, even beyond our own species Conservationist, activist, and one of the nation’s most beloved and acclaimed authors, Terry Tempest Williams has been called “a citizen writer” who speaks eloquently for an ethical stance toward life, showing how environmental issues are social issues that become matters of justice. A scholar at the University of Utah and Dartmouth, she has been equally at home camping in the wilderness and being arrested for civil disobedience.

Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.

To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year. 1 (877) bioneer, http://www.bioneers.org
