"From the Vault," "1984" by George Orwell Part 8 of 13
This week on From the Vault, continuing one of the most important dystopian novels written in modern history, George Orwell's classic 'Nineteen Eighty-Four.'
The entire book was read on-air by longtime Pacifica morning show host Charles Morgan in 1975. Morgan was joined by legendary voiceover artist June Foray, widely known for her work in Disney and Warner Brothers animated productions - in particular as the voice of Rocky in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon. This week we present part of this thirteen-part quintessential Pacifica recording.
From the Vault is presented as part of the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project, funded in part by an award from the GRAMMY Foundation and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission at the National Archives and Records Administration, and past grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and the American Archive funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, along with the generous support of Pacifica Radio Listeners. We also thank our partners and collaborators at the Pop-Up Archive, Amara, Other Minds Archives, George Blood Audio, and the California Audio Visual Preservation Project. Reading produced by Paul Vangelisti. 'From the Vault' Produced by Mark Torres.

Dave Emory, "For the Record #958 - Miscellaneous Articles and Updates"
Updating various paths of inquiry and opening new ones, this program highlights some terrifying possibilities, present and future.
After setting forth Yale historian Timothy Snyder's opinion that Trump would try to stage a Reichstag Fire type event, we chronicle Trump's desire to amend or eliminate the First Amendment of the Constitution and "loosen" the libel laws.
Much of the program updates terrifying developments in the area of what we have called "technocratic fascism," including Facebook's plans to implement brain-to-computer interface that would permit Facebook (and others) to tap into the network's users thoughts. This technology is being overseen and developed by Facebook's head of R & D-Regina Dugan-the former head of DARPA. Facebook's Building 8 R & D program is patterned after DARPA.
Amazon is introducing the new Echo Look, which will put a camera, connected to an artificial intelligence, in people's bedrooms, ostensibly to provide them with real-time fashion critique.
Next, we highlight the fact that artificial intelligence quickly absorbs human racial and gender biases, which bodes poorly for our future.
The broadcast concludes with a look at the latest alleged "Russian" hack-that of French president Emanuel Macron. The hacked documents contained Cyrillic metadata, something Russian intelligence would NOT have done.
Program Highlights Include: Facebook's communication of intimate data on stressed and troubled teenagers to advertisers and other third parties; the complete lack of civil liberties and privacy oversight of the impending Facebook and Amazon technologies; review of the analysis of the alleged "Russian" hacks, documenting the ludicrous nature of the assertions; the latest alleged hack by the Shadow Brokers, involving the communication of white supremacist ideology and an assertion that the culprits are pro-Trump U.S. Deep State insiders.

The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
Ralph talks to Paul Gunter of Beyond Nuclear about all the lies the nuclear industry tells to stay afloat; and solar expert Scott Sklar joins us to talk about how solar energy is already creating more jobs than nuclear and fossil fuels combined. "The nuclear industry and its champions like to refer to it as the nuclear energy 'cycle' but in fact it is a 'chain' that binds our future generations to nuclear weapons and nuclear waste."
"Nuclear power plants, while they don't have smoke stacks, they are emitting a whole host of - up to 124 different - radioactive isotopes on a routine level."
Paul Gunter of Beyond Nuclear
Paul Gunter is an environmental activist and energy policy analyst, who has been an ardent critic of atomic power development for more than 40 years. In 1976 Mr. Gunter helped launch the anti-nuclear movement as cofounder of the Clamshell Alliance, which through non-violent direct action fought the construction of New Hampshire's Seabrook nuclear power plant. Today, he is the director and lead spokesperson in nuclear reactor hazards and security concerns for the group Beyond Nuclear, which aims to educate and activate the public about the connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future.
Scott Sklar is an internationally recognized solar energy leader. He served as Executive Director of the Solar Energy Industries Association, as Political Director of The Solar Lobby, and in the mid 1970s co-founded the Congressional Solar Caucus. He also co-authored the 'Consumer Guide to Solar Energy.' Currently, Mr. Sklar leads his own clean energy technology optimization and strategic policy firm, The Stella Group, Ltd. and also designed and built his own zero-energy home and office, which incorporates an array of solar energy technologies.

THURSDAY NIGHT, JUNE 1
Alan Watts, "Worldly Religions" Part 1 of 4
"Today man seems himself victimized by the social rigging in which his life moves. Its forces and activities seem to him to choke off the expansion of his life-self intimacy. In the light of this, Watts will explore the use of arts, athletics, and other secular activities as actually forms of Yoga - that is, as ways of realizing one's identity with the Ground of Being" (AW) All info: http://www.alanwatts.org
Jack Gariss, "Bio-Meditation" 'Creativity' Part 5 of 7. Originally broadcast on KPFK in 1977.
