‘’CURRENT EVENTS AND PLAYERS IN UPCOMING AND CURRENT CRISES’’

This marks the beginning of the third phase of the class in which a variety of events and people of power will be scrutinized in light of and in connection to their involvement in upcoming and current crises, such as Climate Change, the National Surveillance State, and the Northern Industrial Alliance and its position in global politics.

The upcoming (June 5) papal encyclical on Climate Change and its inherent link to Trans-National Corporate Capitalism is discussed at length. Also discussed, is the concept of a Jubilee year, which will be mandated if there is a lack of global commitment to create legally binding, enforceable consequences to global warming by December 8 of this year.

A number of other scenarios are also discussed—including Bechtel Corporation and water rights in Bolivia, Shell Oil’s involvement in Nigeria, Dick Cheney and his connection to Halliburton, the Carlilsile Group and its connection to the Bush family and the invasion of Afghanistan, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and many more.

This class serves as an introduction to the third phase of the class, fueling students’ desire to research one of these topics for their final paper.

2-3 The Scholar’s Circle

Scholars’ Circle – Book analysis – A Promise Kept: The Muscogee (Creek) Nation and McGirt v Oklahoma – January 8, 2023

PUBLISHED ON JANUARY 9, 2023 BY HOST

In 2020, the Supreme Court surprised many observers by holding up the rights of the Muscogee (Creek) nation. In McGirt v Oklahoma, the Court held that the Creek Nation retained its sovereign rights over a very large part of Eastern Oklahoma. The decision began with a poetic line: “At the end of the Trail of Tears is a promise.” The case raises further interest in issues of Indian law, which includes a very important case on the docket this year on the issue of the adoption of Indian children without the consent of the tribe. Robert Miller and Robbie Ethridge have written a new book on the McGirt case, on the history of the Muscogee nation’s relations with the United States, and the details of the case itself. And the title of the book references that first line of the decision. It is called A Promise Kept: The Muscogee (Creek) Nation and McGirt v Oklahoma. Our guests are the authors of the book. [ dur: 58mins. ]Robert J. Miller is Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. He is the author of Reservation “Capitalism”: Economic Development in Indian Country and Native America, Discovered and Conquered: Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Manifest Destiny.
Robbie Ethridge is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Mississippi. She is the author of From Chicaza to Chickasaw: The European Invasion and the Transformation of the Mississippian World, 1540–1715 and Creek Country: The Creek Indians and Their World, 1796–1816.

4:45-5:45 TUC Radio ‘’Martin Luther King Assassination 1 & 2’’

In Part ONE: Bill Pepper became James Earl Ray’s lawyer when he found out that Ray was not the murderer. His friendship with King and his family goes back to 1967. Pepper had gone to Vietnam and taken photos of children burned by napalm. King asked to meet with him and they worked closely together during the anti-Vietnam war phase of King’s life.

After the failure of all his efforts to get James Earl Ray a new trial, William Pepper recommended one more option to the King family. In this Part TWO Pepper explains why he recommended a wrongful death suit against Loyd Jowers and other known and unknown conspirators. For the first time under oath in any assignation case there is the complete picture of how Martin Luther King was killed. It took the jury 59 minutes to come back with a verdict against Loyd Jowers and an award for the family.

There is a summary of the outcome – as well as 4,000 pages of transcripts posted on the King Center web site. Here is what Coretta Scott King said about the case: “After four weeks of testimony and over 70 witnesses in a civil trial in Memphis, Tennessee, twelve jurors reached a unanimous verdict on December 8, 1999 after about an hour of deliberations that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.’’ In a press statement held the following day in Atlanta, Mrs. Coretta Scott King welcomed the verdict, saying , “There is abundant evidence of a major high level conspiracy in the assassination of my husband, Martin Luther King, Jr. And the civil court’s unanimous verdict has validated our belief. I wholeheartedly applaud the verdict of the jury and I feel that justice has been well served in their deliberations. This verdict is not only a great victory for my family, but also a great victory for America. It is a great victory for truth itself. … The jury was clearly convinced by the extensive evidence that was presented during the trial that, in addition to Mr. Jowers, the conspiracy of the Mafia, local, state and federal government agencies, were deeply involved in the assassination of my husband.’’

The jury also affirmed overwhelming evidence that identified someone else, not James Earl Ray, as the shooter, and that Mr. Ray was set up to take the blame. I want to make it clear that my family has no interest in retribution. Instead, our sole concern has been that the full truth of the assassination has been revealed and adjudicated in a court of law… My husband once said, “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” To-day, almost 32 years after my husband and the father of my four children was assassinated, I feel that the jury’s verdict clearly affirms this principle. With this faith, we can begin the 21st century and the new millennium with a new spirit of hope and healing.

WEDNESDAY, NIGHT JANUARY 18

12-1 Martin Luther King Jr & the FBI

Program #BOYJ002. Recorded in Forest Grove, OR on January 21, 2008.

The FBI, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was once called by American Indian movement activist John Trudell, as the Federal Bureau of Intimidation. The FBI has a long history of persecuting people for thought crimes, having the wrong political ideas. J. Edgar Hoover was the Bureau’s first director and he served in that post for almost 50 years. He ran the FBI as an unchallenged lord of the manor and his agents were serfs to do his bidding. Hoover had a particular animosity for and loathing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader of the Civil Rights movement. He called King “the most notorious liar in the country.” President Kennedy and his attorney general brother Robert signed off on Hoover’s request to wiretap Dr. King. Using infiltrators, the spread of rumors, the fabrication of evidence, and media manipulation, the FBI launched a full-scale smear campaign to discredit Dr. King and the movement he led. It was all done of course in the name of “national security.” Recorded at Pacific University.

Jules Boykoff is professor of political science at Pacific University. Before embarking on an academic career he represented the U.S. Olympic Soccer Team in international competition. His articles have appeared in The Guardianand The New York Times. He is the author of Beyond Bullets: The Suppression of Dissent in the U.S., Celebration Capitalism, and Activism and the Olympics. From Alternative Radio, 1 (800) 444-1977, www.alternativeradio,org.

1-2 Dave Emory, “For the Record #272 - Interview #11 with Jim DiEugenio about ‘JFK Revisited”

This broadcast continues our visits with Jim DiEugenio–author of Destiny Betrayed and JFK Revisited–selected by Oliver Stone to write the screenplay for his latest documentary.

Correction: Mr. Emory misidentified journalist Anderson Cooper as the son of Cokie Roberts. He is the son of the late socialite Gloria Vanderbilt.

Expressing a sentiment that appears to have been shared by many in the government, Secret Service agent Elmer Moore branded JFK a “traitor” in a conversation with Jim Gochenaur:

JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass by Jim DiEugenio; Skyhorse Publishing [HC]; Copyright 2022 by Jim DiEugenio; Introduction Copyright 2022 by Oliver Stone; ISBN 978–1‑5107–7287‑8; p. 205.

. . . . Jim Gochenaur: Moore leaned back in his big comfortable leather chair and he said, “Who killed Jack Kennedy?” Then he said, “Well, I’ll tell you who didn’t. With 100 percent certainty. It wasn’t the Russians.” And my head is starting to swim, I wanted to break in right at that point. But then he said, “I’ll tell you why—JFK was the Russians’ boy. He was giving away everything he could. That man, for all intents and purposes, dare I say it? Jim, I will say it. JFK was a traitor.”

The bizarre saga of the convoluted journey of the “Magic Bullet” (CE399) is framed by Parkland Hospital O.P. Wright’s widow, who stated that “more than one nurse” had found bullets on stretchers at the hospital on the day Kennedy was shot…

2:30-3 The Chris Hedges Report with Boyah J. Farah about his new book "America Made Me a Black Man”

Boyah J. Farah fled the war in Somalia arriving in the United States as a refugee with his mother and siblings when he was fifteen. His romantic dreams of America quickly ran into the dark undercurrents of American racism. Living in a housing project in Bedford, Massachusetts he was forced to discover the curse of being Black in America, the daily humiliations and small, but insidious ways he was made to constantly feel an outsider by whites. He had experienced tribalism in Somalia. He saw in the divide between whites and Blacks, especially with the political ascendancy of Donald Trump and the far right, the same kind of deadly tribalism here, one that usually leads to internecine violence. He watched as other Somali families succumbed to the poison of American racism, writing that although they had survived the war in Africa, American broke them and carried them off. America is democratic, he concedes sardonically, for every Black person is, in the end, simply another disposable Black body. Joining me to discuss his memoir America Made Me a Black Man is Boyah J. Farah.

1-2 Sounds True “Insights from the Edge”

Caverly Morgan: “The Heart of Who We Are”

When Caverly Morgan reentered society after eight years as a Zen monk, she was confronted with a question many of us are asking these days: Considering the enormity of the problems before us, how can one individual’s spiritual practice make a tangible difference in our world?

In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Caverly about her new book, The Heart of Who We Are, and the connection between self-realization and collective transformation. Tune in as they explore these topics and more: the difference between the absolute and the relative; introducing teens to inquiry practice; self-improvement vs. self-realization; the core experience of who we are in our depths; the power of community; meeting our deepest needs; “changing costumes within the dance of suffering”; connecting with others “essence to essence”; broadening public access to contemplative practices; escaping the trap of perfectionism; letting go of our conditioning, individually and collectively; egoic behaviors versus “acts of being.”

Caverly Morgan is a meditation teacher, non-profit founder, speaker, and author. She is the founder of Peace in Schools, a nonprofit that created the nation’s first for-credit mindfulness class in public high schools. Caverly is also the founder of Presence Collective, a community of cross-cultural contemplatives committed to personal and collective transformation. She is the author of A Kids Book About Mindfulness as well as The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together.

Caverly blends the original spirit of Zen with a modern nondual approach. Her practice began in 1995 and has included eight years of training in a silent Zen monastery. She has been teaching contemplative practice since 2001 and leads meditation retreats, workshops and online classes internationally. More at caverlymorgan.org.
