BEHIND THE SCENES
Regarding the continuance of “Something’s Happening!” Our new Interim General Manager, Moe Thomas, told the staff ‘emphatically’ that I would not be taken off KPFK. But he is not the Interim Executive Director and also did not mention the possibility of Buzz (and Maggie - Music Director) being able to stay, so though it was a deep relief for me, it was partial. We hear several new programs coming on - as the rather pessimistic totals move slowly. So to be careful, Buzz and I (remaining at the #1 spot in pledge total) still advise the pledges to carefully be monthly sustaining, allowing the giver to control their investment. But our fingers are still crossed. There are many generous and grateful listeners and Buzz is an incredible pitcher - and there is hope for some changes in the future. As of May 8 the fund drive total is $131,989 — goal is $650,000

“FUNDRAISING SCHEDULE”
This refers to occasional skipped or edited programs to make room for some fundraising time during the fund drive. Buzz and I DO adhere to former General Manager Anyel’s advice on ‘soft fundraising.’’

THE ROLE OF THE PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL:
SANTA CRUZ FREE UNIVERSITY FALL 2014
Background and Motivation for “The Role of the Public Intellectual”: Constrained by their State Boards of Regents, State Colleges & Universities of Western Culture impose requirements upon their Professors that compel them to promote beliefs that support both the objectives and ideologies of the Nation State of which they are a part of. Private Colleges of Western Culture are similarly constrained by their Private Boards of Overseers to promote beliefs that support the private financial interests of contributors who personally finance those private Institutions. In Western Culture, these beliefs include: the primacy of the economic system of State Capitalism; the ideologies of Caucasian Racial Superiority and Female Inferiority; the belief in Scientific Logical Positivism and Materialism (these beliefs are often masked as the development of a superior capacity to function intellectually in order to achieve long range goals rather than functioning emotionally to indulge short term personal satisfactions); and the indoctrination of their students in the dual doctrines of Nationalism and The Legitimization of the Resort to the Use of Military Violence to Achieve the Selfish Economic Goals The Elite of their Nation State.
Just as Political Public Office-Holders in State and Federal Governments feel “constrained” from speaking the truth that they have learned in their positions until after they have“retired from public office, College & University Professors inside State and Private Colleges & Universities oft-times feel constrained from sharing with their students their true conclusions about the academic subjects that they have spent a lifetime teaching until after they have achieved Emeritus status – at which time it is often too late to reach a student audience.
It is the goal of SANTA CRUZ COLLEGE to bring these truths to College & University students while they are still in the midst of their undergraduate and graduate school learning experience. This Course, “REALITY 101”: The Secret Science – The Relationship Between Consciousness and Political Action, brings you crusading Harvard Constitutional Litigation Expert and U.C. Santa Cruz Visiting Lecturer Daniel Sheehan outside of the constraints of the public courtroom and of the State University classroom, to share with you, as active and aggressively-seeking students, the truths that he has not been allowed to share with his audiences in America’s courtrooms or in College & University classrooms pertaining to the secret relationship between “Consciousness” and “Political Action” in Western Civilization.

2:30-3:00 ‘Saving Redwoods in Northern California: Pomo Indian Perspective’
By Maria April 27, 2021Newest Podcasts
A call for support went out early in 2021. Logging was to begin in a coast redwood forest in Mendocino County on the Pacific ocean that many of us believed was protected since it is owned by the State of California. The State purchased almost 50,000 acres from a bankrupt logging company in 1949. The Jackson Demonstration State Forest, located between the city of Willits inland and Fort Bragg on the coast, is managed by CalFire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Research showed quickly that CalFire, except for a short pause, never stopped logging the land of their second growth coast redwoods. But now, in the age of climate change and devastating forest fires, their timber harvest plans come under intense scrutiny. CalFire claims their logging reduces fire danger; the community and fire ecologist say cutting large second growth redwoods takes out the trees that are most fire resistant. They also demand protection for coast redwoods in order to slow down climate change. Redwood trees can live for up to 2,000 years all the while removing carbon from the air.
In early April 2021 two of the biggest redwoods marked for cut were occupied by tree sitters and as of today, April 27, logging has not yet begun.
Meanwhile something else is holding up the chainsaws, bulldozers and road builders that are ready to begin logging. The local tribe of Pomo Indians is intervening in the process since much of the Jackson Demonstration State Forest is on their ancestral land. When this area was an intact old growth forest as recently as in the mid 18-hundreds there existed a network of villages and trails between the coast and the Little Lake Valley inland.
My thanks to the radio program Pomo Perspective and the Program Director of KZYX, Alicia Bales, for permission to rebroadcast a conversation that took place on April 19, 2021. You will hear from a Pomo tribal elder, Priscilla Hunter, and the long-time indigenous rights attorney, Polly Girvin. Opening music clip by Holly Near.

3-3:30 Suzanne Simard - ‘Dispatches from the Mother Tree Project’
By Maria May 4, 2021Newest Podcasts

A report on the underground networks in the forest
Suzanne Simard is Professor of Forest Ecology in the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry. In spite of her status in academia, rigorous research and love and respect from her students it took over 30 years for her ideas to break through.
Ferris Jabr writes in the New York Times Magazine: “By analyzing the DNA in root tips and tracing the movement of molecules through underground conduits, Simard has discovered that fungal threads link nearly every tree in a forest — even trees of different species. Carbon, water, nutrients, alarm signals and hormones can pass from tree to tree through these subterranean circuits…
Resources tend to flow from the oldest and biggest trees to the youngest and smallest. Chemical alarm signals generated by one tree prepare nearby trees for danger. Seedlings severed from the forest’s underground lifelines are much more likely to die than their networked counterparts. Crucially, a majority of the carbon sequestered in forests resides in the soils, anchored by networks of symbiotic roots, fungi and microbes.
Each year, the world’s forests capture more than 24 percent of global carbon emissions. When a mature forest is burned or clear-cut, the planet loses an invaluable ecosystem and one of its most effective systems of climate regulation. The razing of an old-growth forest is not just the destruction of magnificent individual trees — it’s the collapse of an ancient republic whose interspecies covenant of reciprocation and compromise is essential for the survival of Earth as we’ve known it.”
On May 4, 2021 Suzanne Simard’s book, “Finding the Mother Tree” came out.
In a rare Ted talk in June 2016 Simard laid out what she discovered. This radio program also includes excerpts from her Zoom seminar at UBC: Dispatches from The Mother Tree Project, on Oct 22, 2020.
And in late 2020 the acclaimed environmental writer Ferris Jabr accompanied Suzanne Simard for several days of field research in rough terrain for what became a cover story in The New York Times Magazine. This program ends with quotes from his extraordinary science based article.
Ferris Jabr has also written for the Scientific American, The Atlantic, Harper’s, and The New Yorker.
By now Suzanne Simard’s insights are beginning to influence the thoughts about climate change, carbon sequestration and harvesting techniques in departments of forestry throughout Canada and the US.

The media is covering “about half the story” about vaccine passports “and it’s the wrong half,” according to Wayne Rohde, host of the “Right on Point” podcast.

Rohde interviewed Mary Holland, president and general counsel of Children’s Health Defense, about vaccine passports and their potential to infringe on basic civil liberties. Holland pointed out how Jacobson v. Massachusetts, the 100-year-old landmark Supreme Court case used to justify vaccine mandates, is being “stretched beyond recognition,” and how some of today’s Supreme Court justices are pushing back.

Rohde and Holland also discussed the United Nations’ plan, under the Sustainable Development Goals, of ensuring that every human being has a digital ID by 2030, how tech companies are building vaccine passports platforms designed to track far more than just vaccine status and the potential for vaccine passports to be used to discriminate against healthy people who refuse to get the vaccine.

“Right on Point” covers the news of the week, and hosts some of the biggest names in politics, academia and media. The podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play, YouTube and Spotify. Recent podcast topics have included the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program with attorneys Peter Meyers and Renee Gentry; employment mandates with attorney Marshall Tanik.

12-1 Dave Emory, For the Record #1175 - Donovan’s Brain
POSTED BY DAVE EMORY ⋅ MARCH 11, 2021 ⋅
In the 1950’s, a Hollywood “B” horror film titled “Donovan’s Brain” made the rounds. The title referred to the disembodied and scientifically resurrected brain of a businessman named Donovan. His brain takes over and dominates people in the living world, bending them to his criminal will.
This program focuses primarily on William “Wild Bill” Donovan, a Wall Street attorney who ran the OSS, America’s World War II intelligence agency.
Dubbed “America’s original man in black,” Donovan did not create the operational relationship between the criminal “Underworld” and the corporate “Overworld,” however he deepened and institutionalized that relationship through national security undertakings, so much so that the current, benighted political landscape might be said to have derived from “Donovan’s Brain.”
The results are a real-life horror movie.
Before discussing William Donovan, the program sets forth a disturbing historical revisionist perspective on the Comfort Women of World War II–women enslaved by the Imperial Japanese Army to be used as prostitutes.
J. Mark Ramseyer, a professor at Harvard Law School, has authored a paper reinforcing the discredited Japanese propaganda line on the Comfort Women–the allegation that the victims “volunteered” for service!
Of significance, in that context, is the fact that Ramseyer enjoys the title of Mitsubishi Professor of Legal Studies at Harvard. One of the zaibatsu, Mitsubishi was a major employer of slave labor during World War II, including U.S. POW’s.
” . . . . . . . . Mitsubishi’s market position at the war’s end in 1945 was described by a Western economist as being equivalent to the merger of U.S. Steel, General Motors, Standard Oil, Alcoa, Douglas Aircraft, Dupont, Westinghouse, AT & T National City Bank, Woolworth Stores and Hilton Hotels. . . .”
Ramseyer also enjoys the Order of the Rising Sun, bestowed on him by the Japanese government.
In addition to his revisionist perspective on the Comfort Women, he has endorsed the canard that the Japanese pogrom against ethnic Koreans following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 was sparked by Korean hooliganism.
Much of the program deals with Donovan’s pivotal–though largely opaque–career.

1-2 Hidden History of U.S.-Iran Relations
The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States have been at loggerheads ever since America’s ally, the shah, was overthrown in 1979. Iran was an important part of U.S. hegemony in the Middle East. In the decades since, Washington has waged cyber warfare, drone strikes, assassinations, sabotage and sanctions against Tehran. Washington and its media echo chamber portray Iran as dangerous and threatening even though it’s surrounded by American bases and spends just a pittance on weaponry compared to the U.S. But hostility wasn’t always the norm. There’s a rich and mostly hidden history that began several hundred years ago where the two countries had friendly relations. Historian John Ghazvinian said that relationship was filled mutual “admiration, warmth, and benevolence.”
John Ghazvinian, a distinguished historian, is the Executive Director of the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania. His articles have appeared in Newsweek, The New Statesman, and The Nation. He is the author of America and Iran: A History, 1720 to the Present.
