BEHIND THE SCENES

Letter from Executive Director of Pacifica to National Board, October
23.

Dear PNB Directors,

It has been both a challenging and regrettable two plus weeks for all of us, both financially and in our governance. We must move forward together with the work of the Foundation that must be done to reliably serve
our audience with high quality programming that “disseminate(s) information on the causes of conflict between any and all such groups: and through any means compatible with the purposes of this corporation to promote the study of political and economic problems
and of the causes of religious, philosophical and racial antagonisms.” That founding mission is as important today, as it was when it was written, both in our larger world and our work of governance.

Notwithstanding the facts and many opinions of our conflict that have been seen in our public and private dialogues, please step back from the debate and the constant effort to “win” or be “right.” Remember that
our primary duty is to support our daily operations, as well as the staff and listeners, for the survival of all of Pacifica. Each of us still has to work together. Due to do the pending litigation, much is still in the hands of our judicial system. Here’s
an update.

On Monday, the Federal court opted not to hear the arguments, as soon as the parties appeared, remanded the action back to state court. This means that the Federal Court decided that they do not have jurisdiction
because this is an internal board dispute and not a Federal Communications Act issue. Therefore, both sides have to start with a new State Court judge. The TRO is still in effect and that court simply decided it cannot hear our arguments.

The Federal Court judge advised that the parties attempt to work it out rather than continue to engage in costly (time-wise and money-wise) litigation. Given the division on the board, both sides were advised that
a settlement should be explored with a neutral mediator. If you remember, this is what I asked for in my PNB oral report on Thursday night, 10/10/19. We should find a fair, independent mediator who is both skilled in finance and governance, with a commitment
to the values of Pacifica.

There have been a number of emails from PNB directors Monday night quoting board resolutions and giving directions drawn from improperly held meetings. I have been advised by counsel, Kara Steger, that they are
still improper and invalid. Persisting in violating court orders and not following the court’s suggestion to work for a settlement is contrary to what is required. We need to focus on a solution which addresses getting local programming back on WBAI, a solution
that works within our current financial state. A house divided can not stand. We must reason this out in good faith.

While some may question my motives and objectives, you should know my intentions. To some my decisions seemed wrong, outrageous, and heartless. On arrival, I did not have a lot of time or options to find an ideal
solution to the financial crisis, as well as deal with the various compliance issues I encountered, ones that we are still facing. I tried my best to manage the challenging situation and perform my legal obligations, duties and responsibilities as best I could,
given the circumstances. The previous 15 or so Pacifica iED’s and ED’s in the past decade

WBAI Rebuild Proposal October 23, 2019

attempted to answer the call. Some of their experiences are well documented and I believe had been circulated to the PNB.

A lot of harsh, untrue, and insulting things have been said to and about me as an employee of this Foundation. I have experienced a great deal of hostility from some. Our problems cannot be ignored nor swept aside
by factionalism. To be crystal clear, at no time have I ever contemplated selling or swapping WBAI or any of our stations. I have said this many times during our PNB meetings, in print, and whenever I speak to anyone. My lifelong love of bluegrass and jazz
began listening as a child in the Bronx to BAI in the ‘60s. Recently in spring of 2019 New Yorkers listened as another heritage station, WPLJ-FM, fell to the evangelical media juggernaut, EMF. I have been told that a media broker representing them inquired
about WBAI around the ESB period. I’m sure they are still interested in adding their secondary program stream to NYC, as they have done in LA.

The #1 reason I took this assignment is that I did not want WBAI to lose its frequency. Secondly, I want work with you to protect and grow ALL of our Pacifica stations and affiliates. I want us to come together
as a network to serve a great need in our country for the programming that we currently broadcast and to greatly expand on that service.

I am hoping that cooler minds will prevail, that we can all find a way forward. In its near 60 years of life WBAI has existed in different forms, it has evolved, staggered, and has survived. The concern expressed
by New Yorkers since the layoffs can be channeled into positive action, helping to bring the resources needed to relaunch WBAI sustainably. It’s time to rebuild this station into an even better station, one that New Yorkers need and deserve. I am committed
to doing that as I hope you will join me in that effort.

With that in mind I have attached three scenarios for us to review:

1) The Rebuild WBAI Plan. This takes a more affordable, scaled approach to returning local volunteer staff programs. It will allow us to bring local volunteer program staff back quickly, in about 30 days of prep.
The proposal and budget are below.

2) Return WBAI As It Was Plan. In order to return as the station was operating, this is what it will cost based on the budget presented by management to the iCFO: a run rate of $139K per month, with revenues budgeted
at $115K per month, without capital expenditures. Thisgapispartofthereasonthestationcouldnotcoverpayroll consistently and other expenses. The expenses far outweighed the income. The PNO and other Pacifica units lack the cash resources to cover this. The cash
flow trend only gets worse once the loan interest and balloon payments come due, even worse if a recession occurs. If however, the cash can be raised to do this from the station, with determined LSB efforts and the greater NY community, I recommend we do this.
If not, another solution is necessary. I have the budget submitted with the full staff below. I have also attached the historical WBAI fundraising data from 2011 to 2019 provided by WBAI for a realistic benchmark.

WBAI Rebuild Proposal October 23, 2019

3) Pacifica Across America on WBAI. This is the current model of feeding the best of Pacifica programming along with favorites from the Pacifica Archives, independent producers and Pacifica Affiliates. While the
least attractive of all the alternatives, it is the most economical in the short term, but also the least sustainable in the long run. I have attached the running budget below. This solution, due to the payroll funding shortfall crisis, was always meant to
be a temporary measure. The immediate litigation that followed, left no time to develop this idea, and slowed these efforts considerably. The hope is that we will make significant efforts to rebuild WBAI with the support of the greater New York Community.
I still believe this is possible, that we can raise the funds to construct a proper new home for WBAI, sustainably staffed to provide expanded services to our NY listeners.

The Foundation must continue to live in the real world of dollars and cents. We should look to our founder’s vision for guidance, never compromising our Foundation’s core principles, matters of law, our responsibilities
to our staff, and providing inspiring programming to our listeners. I hope these budgets and the Rebuild WBAI Plan will set the table for a realistic discussion.

I would like to begin a civil dialogue so that we can move forward. I will make myself available to you at any time if you would like to speak personally. Please email me with any time windows that you may be available.
It is my sincere hope that we can do so soon.

Thank you, John Vernile

Executive Director, Pacifica Foundation

FUND DRIVE SCHEDULE

12-1 Gary Null “Progressive Commentary Hour”

Death by Medicine Revisited

By Gary Null and Helen Buyniski

By any measure, we are in the worst health crisis in American history. Out of a population of 335 million people, two thirds of us – adults and children both – are suffering from a wide range of health conditions,
the majority of which are preventable. Our first effort at explaining how serious the conditions were and indeed to verify that they were real using only the mainstream medical community and the government’s official figures took several years with a group
of highly qualified board certified physicians and academics with PhDs with deep experience in research scholarship.

Up until that point, no one had compiled all injuries and fatalities occurring as a result of medical treatment. The best that had been done was by Dr. Lucian Leape, a professor from Harvard who had written a groundbreaking
report that had gone virtually unchallenged and unreported in the medical press. Later, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) would publish an article by Dr. Barbara Starfield showing that iatrogenesis was the third leading cause of death.
Dr. Martin Makary reached the same conclusions over a decade later, publishing his findings in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). However, it was surprising and disheartening to find that with all the medical and scientific research expertise at these researchers’
disposal, they left out several important causes of death from their statistics. This showed gross flaws in their research methodology.

Our report was the most comprehensive to date published in the US. Once completed, we sent it for feedback and comment to more than 7,000 scientific publications, health reporters, and federal agencies. Not one
single response was received. How is this even possible? We expected legitimate challenges and corrections; even admonitions would have been welcome. Instead, we got dead silence. Why?

Years have passed, and the state of American health has only worsened. The latest official reports show more heart attacks, more strokes, obesity, and diabetes including in children. There is more dementia, Alzheimer’s,
and cancer than ever before. And yet we spent more on healthcare in 2017 than we’ve ever spent – $3.5 trillion, 17.9 percent of the nation’s GDP, and a number that is on track to further increase in 2018.1 So now we’re perplexed – if we tell people that we
have the best healthcare system in the world, with the latest technology, the most pharmaceuticals and medical procedures, state of the art hospitals, and special treatment centers, we should have a population that is far more robust and healthy – but just
the opposite is the case.

Then it occurred to us that we were also missing a very important piece of this puzzle. Why are we not preventing disease? How much is all this disease actually costing the patient, corporations, and society? The
figures are both staggering and heartbreaking, as there is no discussion of this. We only become invested in a person after they are sick. We have only focused as a society on how to alleviate the symptoms of that person’s illness. When we compare our healthcare
program and state of health and longevity with other developed nations, we are near dead last. How is this possible? Those individuals who’ve brought these dire statistics to our attention (Makary, Starfield, Leape, etc) have initiated no wider call for action.
Nothing has happened. They too have been shouting into the void. This is a dialogue we desperately need. Our new article expands on the first to include a discussion on iatrogenesis, its causes, prevention, and most importantly how to resolve in part or whole
all of these problems…

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 30

FUND DRIVE SCHEDULE

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #1087 - Fascism: 2019 World Tour, Part 2

After review of Carl Lundstrom’s financing of the Sweden Democrats, as well as his central role in financing the Pirate Bay site (which hosted WikiLeaks, courtesy of Joran Jermas/Israel Shamir), we delve into the
operations of Lundstrom’s Sweden Democrat associates.

Utilizing the anti-immigrant theme utilized with great effect by fascists around the world, the Sweden Democrats are gaining ground on the Swedish political landscape.

Key points of discussion include: The Nazi origins of the Sweden Democrats; the Waffen SS background of one of the party’s founders; networking of the Sweden Democrats with fascists and reactionaries in other countries,
including the U.S., France and Germany; the pivotal role of the internet in advancing the fortunes of the Sweden Democrats.

Next, we examine the rise of Jair Bolsonaro’s fascist government.

Again, in recent programs, we have examined the profound role of online technology. in the promotion of fascism, as well as overlapping areas of intelligence activity. In that context, it is vital to remember that
the Internet was developed as a weapon, with the focus of the technology being counterinsurgency.

In Brazil, the rise of Jair Bolsonaro’s fascist government received decisive momentum from YouTube, which is transforming the political landscape in Brazil, as it is in this country.

” . . . .In colorful, far-right rants, Mr. Moura accused feminists, teachers and mainstream politicians of waging vast conspiracies. Mr. Dominguez was hooked.

As his time on the site grew, YouTube recommended videos from other far-right figures. One was a lawmaker named Jair Bolsonaro, then a marginal figure in national politics — but a star in YouTube’s far-right community
in Brazil, where the platform has become more widely watched than all but one TV channel. Last year, he became President Bolsonaro.

‘YouTube became the social media platform of the Brazilian right,’ said Mr. Dominguez, now a lanky 17-year-old who says he, too, plans to seek political office. . . .”

Two excerpts from the story below encapsulate and epitomize the growing, successful manifestation of internet fascism: “An Ecosystem of Hate” and the “Dictatorship of the ‘Like’ ”

“. . . . An Ecosystem of Hate

. . . . As the far right rose, many of its leading voices had learned to weaponize the conspiracy videos, offering their vast audiences a target: people to blame. Eventually, the YouTube conspiracists turned their
spotlight on Debora Diniz, a women’s rights activist whose abortion advocacy had long made her a target of the far right.

Bernardo Küster, a YouTube star whose homemade rants had won him 750,000 subscribers and an endorsement from Mr. Bolsonaro, accused her of involvement in the supposed Zika plots.

As far-right and conspiracy channels began citing one another, YouTube’s recommendation system learned to string their videos together.

However implausible any individual rumor might be on its own, joined together, they created the impression that dozens of disparate sources were revealing the same terrifying truth.

‘It feels like the connection is made by the viewer, but the connection is made by the system,’ Ms. Diniz said.

Threats of rape and torture filled Ms. Diniz’s phone and email. Some cited her daily routines. Many echoed claims from Mr. Küster’s videos, she said.

Mr. Küster gleefully mentioned, though never explicitly endorsed, the threats. That kept him just within YouTube’s rules.

When the university where Ms. Diniz taught received a warning that a gunman would shoot her and her students, and the police said they could no longer guarantee her safety, she left Brazil. . . .

. . . . ‘The Dictatorship of the Like’

Ground zero for politics by YouTube may be the São Paulo headquarters of Movimento Brasil Livre, which formed to agitate for the 2016 impeachment of the left-wing President Dilma Rousseff. Its members trend young,
middle-class, right-wing and extremely online.

Renan Santos, the group’s national coordinator, gestured to a door marked ‘the YouTube Division’ and said, ‘This is the heart of things.’

Inside, eight young men poked at editing software. One was stylizing an image of Benito Mussolini for a video arguing that fascism had been wrongly blamed on the right.

. . . . The group’s co-founder, a man-bunned former rock guitarist name Pedro D’Eyrot, said ‘we have something here that we call the dictatorship of the like.’

Reality, he said, is shaped by whatever message goes most viral. Even as he spoke, a two-hour YouTube video was captivating the nation. Titled ‘1964’ for the year of Brazil’s military coup, it argued that the takeover
had been necessary to save Brazil from communism.

Mr. Dominguez, the teenager learning to play guitar, said the video persuaded him that his teachers had fabricated the horrors of military rule.

Ms. Borges, the history teacher vilified on YouTube, said it brought back memories of military curfews, disappeared activists and police beatings. ‘I don’t think I’ve had my last beating,’ she said. . . .”

1-1:30 Chris Hedges, "On Contact"

Chris Hedges talks to New York Catholic Workers Martha Hennessy and Carmen Trotta about breaking into the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base to charge the US government with crimes against peace on April 4, 2018.
The peace activists, known as the Kings Bay Plowshares 7, were arrested and went on trial this week in Georgia, following allegations of trespass and damage to government property, among others. Kings Bay is the largest nuclear submarine base in the world,
with six ballistic missile subs and two guided missile subs. Over the past four decades, activists in the Plowshares movement have taken part in about 100 similar actions at nuclear arms facilities, beginning in 1980 at the General Electric nuclear missile
plant in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

1:30-2:30 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour

Labor writer, Steven Greenhouse, joins Ralph to discuss his new book “Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present
and Future of American Labor.” Then Steve, David, and Ralph have a spirited discussion about how the 99% can wrest power from the 1%.

Steven Greenhouse is an award-winning reporter who covered labor and workplace issues for nineteen years at The
New York Times. He has also served as a business and economics reporter and a diplomatic and foreign correspondent.

“I think one of the reasons Trump won Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania is that workers were too misinformed, and they thought Trump was going to do wonders for them. And if unions did a better job communicating,
educating, perhaps a weekly email newsletter about how Trump is hurting workers, how Trump has rolled back all these protections that Obama had provided, extending overtime to millions of more workers. Obama issued this very important rule that doesn’t get
enough attention that required Wall Street firms to act in the best interests of workers in handling their 401Ks. And Trump, doing a huge favor for Wall Street and really stabbing workers in back, scrapped that rule. Now, it’s much easier for Wall Street firms
to rip off workers.”

“In no other industrial nation do corporations fight so hard to beat back and, indeed, quash labor unions. And they threaten to close their plant if they unionize. They threaten to even cut benefits if workers
unionize. In 34% of unionization drives – one study found – the companies fire the workers who are leading the unionization drive in order to cripple the unionization drive.”

“Tens of millions of workers are making less today than workers were paid in 1968 adjusted for inflation, even though – because of automation etc. – you are twice as productive. One worker in Walmart produces as
much as two workers in Walmart in 1968. You’re getting zero benefit. All the productivity gains are going to pay Walmart’s executives and top managers and not to you.”
