12-1 Homeopathy: How Can Wikipedia Get It So Wrong?

In 2014, Dana Ullman, who is regarded as America’s leading advocate for homeopathy and an author and publisher of over 35 books about this alternative medical system, bumped into Wikipedia’s co-founder Jimmy Wales in Vancouver. Over the years, Wales is on record for showing animosity against homeopathy and has publicly put his support behind efforts to discredit it. After a verbal exchange over Ullman’s concerns about the online encyclopedia’s unwarranted bias and misinformation under its homeopathy entry, Ullman published an article entitled Dysfunction at Wikipedia on Homeopathic Medicine as a response to Mr. Wales.
At the time of the article was written Wikipedia described homeopathy as “a pseudoscience and its remedies have been found to be no more effective than placebos.” Ullman wrote, “It is more than a tad ironic that this first paragraph in the Wikipedia article on homeopathy references only one article that was published in a peer-review medical journal.” In particular he takes issue with a referenced study by Shang, et.al and informs Wales that it “has been thoroughly discredited.” Ullman cites an article published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, which found that the Shang analysis failed to review “higher quality” medical trials; if it had done so, the analysis would have had a positive conclusion confirming homeopathy’s efficacy in treating certain illnesses. Consequently, the review concluded that the Shang study was biased by “arbitrarily defin[ing] one subset” and deemed the “entire review as ‘falsely negative.’”

There is a movement towards plant-based foods with many leading physicians seeing the reversal of conditions in patients following plant-based diets. Unfortunately, people researching the subject may come across writings by Dr. Stephen Barrett. Regarding nutrition, Barrett relies on the now scientifically debunked advice of the food pyramid where meat and dairy are the top bases of the diet, followed by wheat products, such as breads and pastas. Fruits and vegetables are given less significance. As Barrett has been a primary source for health-related articles on Wikipedia, influencing a massive audience, we decided to look at a few of the statements he has made over the years. Does he deserve to be considered an unbiased, objective authority on the subject? Judge for yourself…

In this program, we resume discussion and analysis of the consummately important recent book Surveillance Valley: The Secret Military History of the Internet by Yasha Levine. In the previous program, we noted, among other points of analysis, the decisive role of Eddie “The Friendly Spook” Snowden in promoting the intelligence-agency crafted Tor network.
In addition to Tor, the Open Technology Fund (read “CIA”) helped finance the Signal app for mobile phones. It, too, is fundamentally compromised. ” . . . . . . . . The Tor project remained the best-known privacy app funded by the Open Technology Fund, but it was quickly joined by another: Signal, an encrypted mobile phone messaging app for the iPhone and Android. . . .”
Not surprisingly, the CIA’s Eddie “The Friendly Spook” Snowden was a big promoter of Signal, as well as Tor: ” . . . . People at the ACLU claimed that Signal made federal agents weep. The Electronic Frontier Foundation added Signal alongside Tor to its Surveillance Self-Defense guide. Fight for the Future, a Silicon Valley-funded privacy activist organization, described Signal and Tor as ‘NSA-proof’ and urged people to use them. Edward Snowden was the combo’s biggest and most famous booster and repeatedly took to Twitter to tell his three million followers that he used Signal and Tor every day, and that they should do the same to protect themselves from government surveillance. ‘Use Tor, Use Signal,’ he tweeted out.
“With endorsements like these, Signal quickly became the go-to app for political activists around the world. Egypt, Russia, Syria, and even the United States—millions downloaded Signal, and it became the communication app of choice for those who hoped to avoid police surveillance. Feminist collectives, anti-President Donald Trump protesters, communists, anarchists, radical animal rights organizations, Black Lives Matter activists—all flocked to Signal. Many were heeding Snowden’s advice: ‘Organize. Compartmentalize to limit compromise. Encrypt everything, from calls to texts (use Signal as a first step.)’ . . . .”
Yasha Levine sums up the fundamental contradictions inherent in this dynamic: ” . . . . If you stepped back to survey the scene, the entire landscape of this new Internet Freedom privacy movement looked absurd. Cold War-era organizations spun off from the CIA now funding the global movement against government surveillance? Google and Facebook, companies that ran private surveillance networks and worked hand in hand with the NSA, deploying government-funded privacy tech to protect their users from government surveillance? Privacy activists working with Silicon Valley and the US government to fight government surveillance—and with the support of Edward Snowden himself? . . . .”

1-1:30 Jane Anne Morris, ‘Democracy Theme Park’
Jane Anne Morris was one of the primary researchers, writers and workshop leaders in POCLAD the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy. They came together in the early 1990’s to try to better understand why all of our activism against corporations that are causing harm to people and nature was so ineffective.
The website Democracy Theme Park dot org is Jane Anne Morris’ precious gift to us. She died on May 28, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin. And this program is a tribute to her. Here is the way she wanted us to enter her site. She wrote:
“I first brought up the idea of the Democracy Theme Park — the place where we play at pulling the levers of democracy, only to discover they aren’t connected to anything — at a conference in Texas in 1996 … Corporate executives have continued writing laws and buying television stations. They’re making policy, while we’re standing in line for rides at the Democracy Theme Park.
But we don’t have to stay here. We too can develop provocative and nuanced strategies for returning democracy to what it was supposed to be all about; government for the people, by the people. So hang on to your hats and sharpen your pencils… we’re going over the wall! But first, take a step back to 1996. What I said then is still (alas) deeply relevant.”
Jane Anne Morris was recorded by C-SPAN on November 26, 1996 in Texas at the founding convention of the Alliance for Democracy. This is the first of several programs honoring her. How “Free Trade” Is Stealing Our Democracy – Long before the 2010 Supreme Court Decision in Citizens United ruled that corporations as persons are entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government, Jane Anne Morris had written, spoken out, and campaigned on the decades long efforts of US corporations to use the Supreme Court to expand and solidify their power. She likens the US Supreme Court to the infamous unelected panels that today, in international trade, are empowered to overrule the laws of entire countries – even the size of Canada and China – when they are putting restrictions on corporate trade, or have the audacity to protect the environment and labor.
Jane Anne Morris was one of the principal members of the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (POCLAD.org), a think tank of about a dozen individuals, co-founded by Ward Morehouse and Richard Grossman just before the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
Recorded one year before Citizens United this interview reflects Jane Anne Morris research of the previous decade. She was interviewed by Tom Lewiston on Network X in Seattle on January 10, 2009.
A link to this interview on film is on <tucradio.org> Jane Anne Morris died on May 28th, 2019, in Madison, Wisconsin of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She was about to complete a book on the role of the US Supreme Court in dismantling democracy. We hope that someone will be able to put together her notes.
