VACATION'S END
I am back this week from my vacation - the first in several years. Great thanks is owed to Buzz for taking over the helm. It's a relief that I can take time off without the show disappearing albeit temporarily. It is not an easy job and also tends to destroy daytime activities. BTW The timing of my time off was only coincidental with the government shutdown.

12:-1 Pema Chodron, "Noble Heart"
'A Self-Guided Retreat on Befriending Your Obstacles'

You can't get away from suffering. That's the good news, teaches Pema Chödrön. For at the core of your most painful experiences, perhaps more than anywhere else, you will find the seeds of your awakening.

On Noble Heart, this beloved American-born Buddhist nun shows you how vulnerability is your greatest spiritual resource on the path through life's difficulties. The noble heart, Ane Pema teaches, is one that sheds its armor, opening itself fearlessly to both heartache and delight. Using special meditations and traditional teachings, Pema Chödrön leads you, step-by-step, toward a full realization of your true strength, the strength that can come only through embracing the pain of your own experience.

Noble Heart was recorded as it happened, within the peaceful shrine room of Gampo Abbey, Ane Pema's home on the cliffs of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Structured so that you can create your own retreat at home or at your meditation center, this complete curriculum brings you key teachings about how to recognize and cultivate the soft spot that is the gateway to your own noble heart.

Here is the promise of the Four Limitless Ones-maitri (loving-kindness), compassion, joy, and equanimity-and down-to-earth advice about how to draw strength from them every day, in any situation. Here, too, are the treasured teachings about the Six Paramitas: the Buddha's own map of the journey to enlightenment. Learn how to connect with your innately unlimited friendliness, and how it can grow big enough to contain the entire world.

With four complete meditations, unique heart teachings, and Ane Pema's trademark humor, Noble Heart invites you to discover for yourself the compassion and wisdom that have established her as a leading voice in American Buddhism. Includes more than nine hours of direct teachings from this revered acharya (master teacher).

Session 6 of 12: 'Unlimited Joy and Equanimity'
Going from limited to limitless. Working with strong emotions. Fundamental openness. "M&M." Basic goodness. Melting practice. Big sky mind. The eight worldly charms. More...

1-2:30 "Pema Chodron and Alice Walker 'In Conversation'"
(Last week's broadcast had technical problems)

How can human suffering become good medicine? Through tonglen: the ancient Tibetan meditation that transforms pain into compassion on the medium of your own breath.

'Pema Chödrön and Alice Walker in Conversation' reveals the revolutionary power of tonglen through a dialogue between two hearts and minds forged in very different cultures-and yet deeply joined in the simple practice of compassion.

Take a front-row seat as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker and American-born Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön reflect on anger, joy, fear, and the union of spirituality and social activism. Hear their personal experiences of the "giving and taking" meditation and how it has helped heal their lives. Let their combined wisdom illuminate the realm, available to us all, where the barriers between self and others dissolve.

Bhikshuni Pema Chodron is the first American-born woman to receive full ordination as a Tibetan Buddhist Nun. She is the director of Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia, Canada and author of many best-sellers including 'The Wisdom of No Escape,' Start Where You Are,' and 'When Things Fall Apart.'

Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1983 for 'The Color Purple.' She is the author of numerous novels, short stories, essays, poems, and children's books. Ms. Walker served as executive producer of the independent film, 'Warrior Marks;' a documentary about female genital mutilation.

Introduction by James Meadows, a Buddhist Studies graduate student.

Recorded live at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, Pema Chödrön and Alice Walker in Conversation comes with a seven-page booklet covering tonglen instructions and suggestions for further reading. Includes a lively Q&A session. (77)

2:30-3:30 Jack Kornfield, "The Jewel of Liberation" #2 of 8

For four decades, Buddhist meditation teacher Jack Kornfield has shared practical instructions for awakening the wise and compassionate heart in the midst of all we experience. The Jewel of Liberation presents 10 pinnacle dharma talks (teaching sessions) hand-selected by Jack from his personal collection to illuminate the pathways out of suffering and into the natural freedom that is both our shared birthright and our greatest gift to the world.

Reclaim the Seat of Dignity, Compassion, and Lovingkindness

Meditation is the practice of awakening itself; it is the fundamental tool the Buddha offered to quiet the mind and open the heart. We begin our retreat with an examination of the art of meditation and how it empowers us to see things clearly and be gracious with the flow of this ever-changing life.

The Jewel of Liberation continues with guidance in managing our troubles, the "weeds" that arise even as we cultivate the seeds of abiding happiness. Our retreat culminates with an inquiry into the "laws of life," the understandings we must have if we are to experience freedom independent of our circumstances.

The Possibility of Freedom Here and Now

"The sure heart's release is found nowhere else but in our own direct experience-for it is who and what we are," teaches Jack Kornfield. "The world so much needs people who are free in this way, unafraid to love every being." Here is his invitation for each of us to "be a lamp of freedom for yourself and for all."

Session 2 of 8: 'Take the One Seat'
The river of change. The firm ground of emptiness. The foundation of mindfulness. Quieting the mind. Courage and surrender. Guided practice: Resting in Awareness.

1-2 Dr. Samantha Brody, 'Overcoming Overwhelm'

(Scheduled in Guide last week but not played)

Dr. Samantha Brody is a licensed naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, and the founder of Evergreen Natural Health Center in Portland, Oregon. With Sounds True, she has published 'Overcoming Overwhelm: Dismantle Your Stress from the Inside Out.' In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Dr. Samantha about honoring intentions for the New Year rather than making easily broken "resolutions." They discuss how to approach overwhelm with greater equanimity by identifying your "true north"-those priorities and values that truly define how you want to live your life. Dr. Samantha considers what it means to make healthy, nourishing choices in alignment with your true north. Finally, Tami and Dr. Samantha talk about the revitalizing power of a good night's sleep and how to deal with the emotional overwhelm of a constantly changing world. (57 minutes)

Tami's Takeaway: As a naturopathic physician, Dr. Samantha Brody has worked with over 30,000 clients to help them "overcome overwhelm" and make lifestyle changes that support greater health and vitality. I pushed hard in this conversation to find out what Dr. Samantha feels is the chief characteristic of people who actually follow through on their intentions to live with greater health and balance (whether that involves a new diet, fitness plan, or some other approach to reducing stress). Her answer is my takeaway: The most important factor in overcoming overwhelm is a willingness to take 100 percent responsibility for our choices and the results that follow.

2-3:30 Damien Echols: "Building the Light Body"

Damien Echols was wrongfully convicted of murder in the infamous "West Memphis Three" case and spent more than 18 years on death row before his exoneration and release. Now he teaches Western ceremonial magick-the same practice he credits with saving his life in prison. With Sounds True, Damien has published the book 'High Magick' and a practice-oriented audio companion, 'A Course in High Magick.' In this episode of 'Insights at the Edge,' Tami Simon speaks with Damien about magick and how it is meant to "constantly ingest more of divinity." Damien describes two of the central practices of magick-the Middle Pillar and the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram-and details why they are so foundational to the modality. Damien explains how he first discovered magick while in solitary confinement and details the concept of "will" in relationship to the Buddhist concept of dharma. Finally, Damien and Tami talk about what it means to manifest a "light body" and the overall goal of spiritual liberation through magick.

Tami's Takeaway: Damien Echols is a "current-bearer"-someone who is able to pass to others an experience of boundless light. When I met with Damien in November of 2018 at a launch event for his new book, High Magick, I could tell that something had recently happened to him that had dramatically increased the intensity of this current. In this conversation, he describes how the practices of magick, which he calls "a Western path of enlightenment," brought him to an experience of ego dissolution, which he describes as "experiencing myself as a small handful of sand that someone threw into a tornado." The takeaway: an invitation to let go of any feeling of separateness, enter the abyss, and discover the interconnected light that awaits us.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JANUARY 30

SPECIAL: We are taking a one week break from Dave Emory's manumental multi-part inter with Jim DiEugenio to look closely at some 'ignored' aspects of the current 'Russiagate' coverage by two multi-decade long experts in law, government, and 'security.'

12-12:30 Ray McGovern - "RussiaGate: The Absence of Evidence?" (ONE of TWO)

The material for this program literally landed on my doorstep with a personal challenge - would TUC radio and you who have listened over time be open to hearing arguments that there is no evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections?
Given the speaker, former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who I met and recorded before, beginning with the opposition to the war on Iraq; and given the expertise of the group of colleagues around him, the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, VIPS; and given that this group expressed their doubts about Russian interference already in December of 2016; and given that no major TV or print media have given them a voice - I picked up the challenge and am giving Ray McGovern and his colleagues this space and time and hope that you might find his arguments and evidence as intriguing as I did.
Ray McGovern served as a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the administration of John F. Kennedy to that of George H. W. Bush. His duties included chairing National Intelligence Estimates and preparing the President's Daily Brief to Ronald Reagan's security advisers from 1981 to 1985.
In January 2003, McGovern co-created Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) to expose how intelligence was being falsified to "justify" war on Iraq. VIPS remains active to this day.
McGovern was recorded on August 4, 2018 at the Common Good Cafe in Seattle, WA. Thanks to KODX-LP FM radio for the recording.

12:30-1 Ray McGovern - "RussiaGate: The Absence of Evidence?" (TWO of TWO)

Includes a clip from Noam Chomsky explaining his skepticism of the RussiaGate claims.

After retiring he became a trusted source of information on the falsified intelligence about weapons of mass destruction that was used to bring the US into the disastrous war on Iraq.
For over two years McGovern has focused on what came to be dubbed RussiaGate and in part ONE you heard about his assessment of Julian Assange, and the so-called hacking of e-mails of the DNC. He raised questions about the company CrowdStrike that ran the computers of the DNC and why the FBI never investigated the so-called hacks.
In this program McGovern presents arguments and evidence for law breaking of senior official in intelligence organizations, the FBI and the Obama era Department of Justice. McGovern states that instead of RussiaGate we ought to be talking about FBIGate.
Ray McGovern was recorded on August 4, 2018 at the Common Good Cafe in Seattle, WA. Thanks to Mike McCormick of KODX-LP FM radio for the recording.
