12 - 1 Pema Chodron, "Noble Heart" Session 2 of 12

'A Self-Guided Retreat in Befriending Your Obstacles'

You can't get away from suffering. That's the good news, teaches Pema Chödrön. For at the core of your most painful experiences, perhaps more than anywhere else, you will find the seeds of your awakening.

On 'Noble Heart,' this beloved American-born Buddhist nun shows you how vulnerability is your greatest spiritual resource on the path through life's difficulties. The noble heart, Ane Pema teaches, is one that sheds its armor, opening itself fearlessly to both heartache and delight. Using special meditations and traditional teachings, Pema Chödrön leads you, step-by-step, toward a full realization of your true strength, the strength that can come only through embracing the pain of your own experience.

'Noble Heart' was recorded as it happened, within the peaceful shrine room of Gampo Abbey, Ane Pema's home on the cliffs of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Structured so that you can create your own retreat at home or at your meditation center, this complete curriculum brings you key teachings about how to recognize and cultivate the soft spot that is the gateway to your own noble heart.

Here is the promise of the Four Limitless Ones-maitri (loving-kindness), compassion, joy, and equanimity-and down-to-earth advice about how to draw strength from them every day, in any situation. Here, too, are the treasured teachings about the Six Paramitas: the Buddha's own map of the journey to enlightenment. Learn how to connect with your innately unlimited friendliness, and how it can grow big enough to contain the entire world.

With four complete meditations, unique heart teachings, and Ane Pema's trademark humor, 'Noble Heart' invites you to discover for yourself the compassion and wisdom that have established her as a leading voice in American Buddhism. Includes more than nine hours of direct teachings from this revered acharya (master teacher).
Highlights:

The four great catalysts of awakening, and how to begin integrating them into your life today
The basic goodness that nothing can take away from you
Authentic Tibetan Buddhist chants for generating gratitude and compassion
Where to find and how to build your inner strength and trust
The maitri meditation that multiplies love
How the Three Noble Principles can enrich everything you do
Why you need your soft spot to awaken spiritually
When "don't know" mind is wiser than all the teachings in the world
The Three Lords of Materialism-and how to diffuse their power
The antidote to aggression
A melting practice you can use to undo isolation and anxiety

1-2 Robert Thurman, "Making the World We Want' Part 2 of 6

'A Passionate Examination of Buddhism's Potential to Revolutionize the Course of Humanity'

Columbia University professor Robert Thurman stands alone among scholars of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. He was the first Westerner to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, and he is the renowned translator of many seminal Buddhist texts, including 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead.'

On 'Making the World We Want,' you will hear a very different Thurman as he speaks candidly on what he considers the most urgent issue of our time: how Buddhism is now poised to revolutionize the entire course of humanity.

In this passionate, incisive, and often hilarious joyride of the mind and spirit, Thurman explores: mindful communities as "enlightenment factories" and how they have sparked "inner" revolutions throughout history; the Buddha's philosophy of life, liberty, and the pursuit of real happiness; how compassion and nonduality spur social action; the vision of sacred texts for the future of humanity; and much more.

"The Buddha founded a quiet revolution," asserts Thurman, "a total reorientation of the habits of individuals and entire societies." On 'Making the World We Want,' you will learn how each of us can participate in this monumental revolution today.

2-3:15 Paul Hawken: "A Regenerative World"

Paul Hawken is an author, entrepreneur, and environmentalist whose books include 'Natural Capitalism,' 'The Ecology of Commerce,' and the New York Times bestselling 'Drawdown.' In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Paul about the spiritual origins of his lifelong devotion to the natural environment. They talk about Project Drawdown-Paul's far-reaching plan to reverse global warming-and the fact that climate change is an alarm bell telling humanity it needs to transform itself. Paul explains that dealing successfully with climate change won't just involve phasing out fossil fuels, but also reorganizing the systems of labor, culture, and economics that led us to this point. Finally, Paul and Tami discuss why life regenerates life and how we as a species can rise to the challenge of our present crises. (73 minutes)

Tami's Takeaway

Most of the time, when I hear people talk about climate change, I feel some combination of fear, helplessness, and resignation. Listening to Paul Hawken, I felt activated and turned on. As he says, it's not about "game over" for the human race, but "game on" . . . and how this is a time when we are called to step forward into our greatest human capacities and possibilities. Paul Hawken transmits the beauty, flow, and regenerative power of the natural world in a way that is contagious. When the interview was over, I felt like everything around me was in a shimmering fluid state, in unstoppable regenerative flow.

12:30-2 Perle Besserman, "Kabbalah: The Way of the Jewish Mystic" Part 2

Kabbalah has reached the mainstream, with people from all walks of life studying this formal meditation system from Judaism's mystical path. Yet, when Perle Besserman published the first edition of 'Kabbalah: The Way of the Jewish Mystic' over 30 years ago, fea outsiders had access to the rich lore and practices associated with it. With this audio edition of her landmark work, Besserman shares the Kabbalah 'from mouth to ear' in the oral tradition as it was originally taught almost 1000 years ago. Besserman tells how today's Kabbalists are the direct heirs to a mass movement of everyday mystics stretching back many centuries. She guides listeners through the wonders of the Kabbalah's unique system for oneness with God: the precepts for righteous living; its esoteric view of the universe' and meditation practices, including those for beginners. Kabbalah has long been thought of as 'impenetrable at best.' Now it has been made available to every listener curious about this mystical way of life.

A descendant of the Baal Shem Tov, Perle Besserman has studied Jewish mysticism with Rabbis Zvi Yehuda Kook and Aryeh Kaplan. She has written several books on mysticism, including Kabbalah: The Way of the Jewish Mystic (published under the name Perle Epstein), and is the editor of an anthology in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series, The Way of the Jewish Mystics. She presents workshops on women's spirituality around the United States and in Europe.

2-2:30 Paul Stamets: "Mushrooms, Bees, and Saving the World, 2018"

As forests burn across the US and misguided attempts to prevent fires by clear-cutting or raking the forest floor are being proposed, TUC Radio remembers the mycologist and author Paul Stamets. He is calling attention to the fact that old growth forests contain organisms that can heal us, feed us, or kill us.

More than any other scientist practicing today, Paul Stamets has dedicated himself to the life of fungi and that of their underground support system, the mycelium. Stamets says that the mycelia are soil magicians. They give rise not just to mushrooms but form an integral part of the forest ecosystem. The mycelia are disassemblers, creating the debris fields that then feed their fungal descendants. They also show purpose in choosing microbial allies, and Stamets believes they are part of the earth's natural internet that is in constant bio-molecular communication, governing the ecosystem.

Paul Stamets has studied mushrooms for over 40 years. He discovered new species of fungi, saved ancient ones from extinction, and pioneered countless techniques of mushroom cultivation. Along the way he found many ways how fungi can be healers of people and the environment.

His premise is that that mushroom mycelium connects the immune systems between humans and environment - and that premise has been proven many times in his collaborations with scientific institutions and labs.

FUND DRIVE SCHEDULE

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #1030 - Walkin' the Snake From Ukraine to the United States and Around the World"

We have spoken repeatedly about the Nazi tract "Serpent's Walk," in which the Third Reich goes underground, buys into the opinion-forming media and, eventually, takes over.

Hitler, the Third Reich and their actions are glorified and memorialized.

Something similar is happening today in Ukraine.

In 2015, a book was published examining the life of Stepan (also transliterated as "Stephan") Bandera, the Ukrainian fascist and Third Reich ally whose political heirs ascended to power in Ukraine through the Maidan coup. CORRECTION: Mr. Emory, working from memory, misidentified the publication in which Daniel Lazare's article appeared. It was "Jacobin Magazine," not "Counterpunch."

We have repeatedly made the point that the dimensions of official lying in the West were of truly Orwellian proportions-documented World War II history was being dismissed as "Russian propaganda" or "Kremlin propaganda."

" . . . But thanks to Grzegorz Rossolinski-Liebe's Stepan Bandera: The Life and Afterlife of a Ukrainian Nationalist, it now seems clear: those terrible Russians were right. . . Although Bandera and his followers would later try to paint the alliance with the Third Reich as no more than 'tactical,' an attempt to pit one totalitarian state against another, it was in fact deep-rooted and ideological. Bandera envisioned the Ukraine as a classic one-party state with himself in the role of führer, or providnyk, and expected that a new Ukraine would take its place under the Nazi umbrella, much as Jozef Tiso's new fascist regime had in Slovakia or Ante Pavelic's in Croatia. . . ."

Indeed. This is the point we have been making for many years.

The Ukrainian government continues its reversal of the documented history of World War II: An exhibit celebrating "Ukrainian independence" revels in the OUN/B, Nazi-allied forces that ascended in Ukraine after the Third Reich's invasion of the Soviet Union...

"A discussion of the many aspects of the problem of 'observing the observer' and 'knowing the knower,' an enterprise that seems always to come to a dead end or to impenetrable mystery. But perhaps the very difficult of the problem provides a clue to its answer. This is, of course, the central problem of self-realization as approached through the spiritual disciplines of Yoga, Zen, and Taoism." (AW)
