MONDAY NIGHT, July 23

12 -1 Pema Chodron, "Coming Closer to Ourselves"
'Making Everything the Path of Awakening'

How to Befriend Your Most Challenging Emotions and Experiences

In challenging times, why do so many of us turn to Pema Chödrön for guidance? Many say that it's her honest and caring way of communicating the core teachings of Buddhism-not just conceptually, but directly from her heart to ours. In these inspiring sessions, she teaches us how to give that compassion to the person we neglect most often-ourselves. With her, you will explore:

What to do when it feels impossible to be kind to ourselves
In challenging relationships and situations, how to let go of our story and see what's really happening
Cultivating inner comfort and greater kindness toward our bodies
Leaning into frustration, sadness, and fear with a spirit of trust and intimacy
Many other insights and recommendations to befriend the difficult places within us

Through gentle and clear guidance, Coming Closer to Ourselves shows us how, even in the tumult of life's uncertainties, we can begin with a glimmer of curiosity, move closer into our experiences, and discover a place of welcome and refuge within.

Part 2 of 5: 'The Foundation Teachings'
The original teachings of the Buddha. Open space. The three marks of existence. Everything is new in each moment. No cure for up and down. The five skandhas. Just be curious.

2:30-3:30 "From The Vault" - "Immigration and Labor - 1982 and 2017"
We begin by looking back at how Immigrants and Undocumented laborers were perceived in 1982 during the Ronald Reagan Presidency. KPFA producer Richard Gonzalez gathered a diverse panel of experts to discuss the many topics of the immigrant work force.

The panel included moderator Armando Valdez, then the Director of The Center for Chicano Research at Stanford University, Joaquin Avila President and lead council Mexican American Legal Defense Fund, Betita Elizabeth Martinez known affectionately to her fans as Betita Martinez to the fans of her book, 400 Years Of Chicano History in Pictures. Ignacio de la Fuente, of the International Molders and Allied Workers Union Local 164.

Together, they survey the history, bust the myths and make sense of the outrage when the subject turns to undocumented workers.

Next we turn to a conversation I had with Marisa Montes and Alejandro Barajas of the Loyola Law Schools Immigrant Justice Clinic. Marisa Montes is the Co Director of the clinic and Alejandro Barajas is one of their staff attorneys. Lets get into this conversation to some current challenges to our immigrant communities. 'Stories, Wisdom, and Practices from Native America'

Essential Training in Native American Healing Wisdom
A Lakota prophecy tells of a day when Westerners will join Native wisdom-keepers to create a new, integrated vision of healing. Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona believes that day has arrived. With 'The Spirit of Healing,' this physician and lifelong student of Native American Spirituality invites you to discover healing practices informed by both modern medical and psychiatric knowledge and the 'narrative medicine' of traditional healers.

The Art of Healing Through Story

In tribal practice, this is expressed in the power of story - when we learn to listen to the stories underneath an illness, we can illuminate the path to healing. Dr. Mehl-adrona reveals time-honored techniques and ceremonies for calling on the strength of our ancestors, community, and helping spirits so that we can re-create our life's story as one of wholeness and health.

Practical guidance for restoring Harmony and Balance to Your Life
Native medicine focuses on enhancing the underlying harmony of our lives, not only within our bodies, but in our relationships to each other, the environment, and the spirit world. Offering over six hours of stories, insights, and practices, Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona provides indispensable guide for integrating Native American Wisdom into your life with 'The Spirit of Healing.'

Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, PhD is certified in family practice, geriatrics and psychiatry, and has worked for years in rural emergency medicine. He is a core faculty member in the clinical psychology program at Union Institute and University. WEDNESDAY NIGHT, JULY 25

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record 1011 - Miscellaneous Articles & Updates"
This broadcast updates and highlights previous topics of discussion, focusing largely on online/Alt-Right/Nazi fascism and some of the malevolent communities that coalesce around various ideological manifestations of that phenomenon.

Program Highlights Include:

1.-Journalist Ronan Farrow's authorship of the New Yorker article that took down Harvey Weinstein. (For more discussion of the #MeToo Movement and weaponized feminism, see FTR #'s 998, 999, 1000, 1001.)
2.-Farrow's State Department work suggestive of involvement with the intelligence community. ". . . . Post-law school: Lands a job at the State Department, as a special advisor focusing on conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan. . . ."
3.-Farrow's co-authorship of the New Yorker article that took down former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a major Trump nemesis, who was also criticizing and investigating other individuals and institutions associated with the Trump/GOP power elite. ". . . . Schneiderman had already been declared 'the man the banks fear most' by the liberal magazine 'The American Prospect.' . . . . In the days since November 9, Schneiderman fired off a letter warning Trump not to drop White House support of Obama's Clean Power Plan, introduced a bill in the state Legislature to give New Yorkers cost-free contraception if the Affordable Care Act is dismantled, threatened to sue after Trump froze EPA funding of clean air and water programs, and joined a lawsuit that argues that Trump's executive order on immigration is not just unconstitutional and un-American, but it brings profound harm to the residents of New York State. . . . He's on the opposite side of the Clean Power Plan fight from Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, since named head of the EPA, and who Schneiderman labeled a 'dangerous and unqualified choice.' . . . "
4.-Schneiderman was also investigating the powerful, well-connected NXIVM cult, one of whose associates was Roger Stone, the long-time Trump/GOP dirty trickster who signaled the #MeToo takedown of Senator Al Franken.

SPECIAL FOR KPFK's 59th BIRTHDAY, JULY 26 1959
2-3:30 Carlos Hagen Presents "KPFK through the Years"
Personal documentary of Carlos Hagen about the history of KPFK. Hagen focuses upon how KPFK reacts to important events, the blind spots within the organization, general tendencies which reoccur over the years, and some possible explanations for these characteristics.

Produced in 1969 and covering a segment of KPFK's first 10 years. Carlos' program began near the beginning of the station and he produced around 500 weekly programs covering many subjects from music to psychology to politics. He was passionate about radio and even built a 2 story brick building on his property which housed a huge collection of reel to reel tapes. He finally moved to Iceland and died there a few years ago. More than an exercise of nostalgia, this program also presents possibilities and potentials.
