WEDNESDAY NIGHT,  DECEMBER 27

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #983 - Fascism 2017 World Tour Part 2 "

As the title indicates, this program examines manifestations of fascism around the world.
In Europe, we analyze:
1.-The recapitulation of Nazi and fascist elements in the current Bulgarian coalition government of Boyko Borisov. (Bulgaria was a Nazi ally in World War II.)
2.-The vitality of “regionalism”–a political/economic doctrine that advocates the secession of key prosperous regions from nation states.
3.-Analysis of regionalism as an application of globalist economic theory to Euorope.
4.-The history of regionalism’s advoacy by Third Reich veteran theoreticians.
5.-Edward Snowden and Julian Assange’s support for Catalan secession from Spain.
6.-The success of the AfD in German elections.
7.-AfD politician Alexander Gauland’s statement that Germans should be proud of what that country’s soldiers accomplished in World War II.
8.-The Austrian Freedom Party’s projected success in upcoming elections. The party was formed in 1956 by Third Reich veterans as a vehicle for re-introducing Austrian Nazis into the country’s political life.
In Latin America, we examine:
1.-The verdict that Argentine AMIA bombing investigator Alberto Nisman’s death was a murder, not a suicide.
2.-Review of the AMIA bombing investigation.
3.-The discovery of a cache of Nazi artifacts, including devices used for determining racial purity. Hitler apparently posed with some of the artificats.
4.-The role of Nisman’s widow as the judge investigating the Nazi artifact case.
5.-Operational links between American Nazi Christopher Cantwell and the Koch Brothers-funded Ludwig Von Mises Institute in Brazil.
In the United States, we detail:
1.-How Breitbart actively promoted Neo-Nazism, while downplaying what it was actually doing.
2.-How white supremacist and Nazi elements are successfully using YouTube to mainstream fascist and racist views.
In the Middle East, we highlight:
1.-Benjamin Netanyahu’s political connections with the Thyssen/Krupp firm, one of the lynchpins of the Bormann capital network.
2.-Yair Netanyahu’s attribution of his father’s political difficulties to sabotage by an international Jewish conspiracy.
3.-Ronald Regan’s 1981 citation of Ibn Khaldun as a key advocate for supply-side economics.
4.-Review of the Muslim Brotherhood’s embrace of the views of Ibn Khaldun.

1-2  The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
Ralf Hotchkiss discussing wheelchairs, and filmmaker Helen Young discusses her movie 'The Nuns, The Priests and the Bombs.'
Initially heard on KPFK Saturdays, 10am

2-2:30 Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz on the Doctrine of Discovery (1 of 3)

In 1455 Pope Nicholas V issued to the King of Portugal the bull Romanus Pontifex, sanctioning and promoting the conquest, colonization, and exploitation of non-Christian nations and their territories. This became the Doctrine of Discovery that is amazingly still enforced today and enshrined in US Federal law. Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz explains the doctrine in this Part One of Three programs. This program is based on a talk she gave at the Lannan Foundation.

The Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe, apart from awarding grants, presents speakers of extraordinary intellect and passion – among them just in 2017 Terry Tempest Williams, Glen Geenwald, Arundhati Roy, Óscar Martínez and Marlon James. Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz spoke on October 11, 2017. You may remember her from a TUC Radio program on the release of her ground breaking book: 'An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States.'

She was introduced by Nick Estes. He is member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, and historian and doctoral candidate in American Studies at the University of New Mexico.

Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz has been part of the international Indigenous movement for more than four decades, working on sovereignty and land rights. She is Professor Emerita of Ethnic Studies at California State University, East Bay.

Thanks to the Lannan Foundation for permission to use the audio from the video they produced of the 1 1/2 hr event. You can watch the film at their web site https://lannan.org/   From TUC Radio, 1 (707) 463-2654www.tucradio.org

2:30-3 Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz: ‘History and the Role of the Military in U.S. Settler Colonialism) (2 of 3)

In her talk at the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe on October 11, 2017, Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz asked why the history of Native Americans is so rarely told. Some of that has to do with the wrongs inflicted on Native Americans throughout what is now the United States. She described the work done at the United Nations to define what constitutes genocide and to pass the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948.

Toward the end of this program Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz is joined on stage in conversation by her friend and colleague, historian Nick Estes. He is member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, and doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico.

Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz has been part of the international Indigenous movement for more than four decades, working on sovereignty and land rights. She is Professor Emerita of Ethnic Studies at California State University, East Bay.

She is the author of many books including 'Roots of Resistance,' 'The Great Sioux Nation,' and 'An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States.'

3-3:30 Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz on the Green Corn Rebellion (Part 3 of 3)

This is the last of three programs on the Indigenous People’s History of the US. On October 11, 2017 Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz gave a talk at the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe New Mexico. In this last segment Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz makes inspiring comments on two questions asked by Nick Estes. He is member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, and doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico.

First she remembers the forgotten history of the Green Corn Rebellion in Oklahoma. When Woodrow Wilson declared war in 1917 the poor tenant farmers in Oklahoma forged a coalition of Whites, African Americans and Indians. They were united by the recognition that the family would starve if they lost their sons. Under leadership of the Seminole Indians they wrote a manifesto, created a liberated zone by blowing up brides and tried to embark on an anti war march through the South with the goal to establish a socialist commonwealth. Their movement was betrayed by an informer and mostly white militia members confronted them and ended the uprising.

This program ends with a moving argument that the tending of corn and most vegetables that are know today by peoples in the Western Hemisphere had created extraordinary civilizations from Terra de Fuego to the Subarctic. They were on par with the other – more famous – civilizations in the Middle East as well as China. European Colonialism appropriated these already existing civilizations, shoved the people aside, and then privatized the wealth.

Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz is not only professor emerita of ethnic studies with a focus on history but has also been part of the International Indigenous movement for more than four decades. Along with groups such as the International Indian Treaty Council she advocated up to the level of the United Nations for indigenous sovereignty and land rights.

She is the author of many books including 'Roots of Resistance,' 'The Great Sioux Nation,' and 'An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States.' Her upcoming book is 'Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment' – to be published by City Lights in early 2018.

Thanks to the Lannan Foundation for permission to use the audio from the pod-cast they produced. It was recorded in Santa Fe on October 11, 2017. You can find the pod-cast or film at their web site lannan.org/

12-1 Vaccine Update
Del Bigtree on Vaccine Safety

This powerful video above features a lecture by Del Bigtree,1 an Emmy award-winning producer of "The Doctors" talk show for six years, and one of the producers of the documentary "Vaxxed." He introduces a lot of basic scientific studies which are generally kept under wraps, but are validated by actual expertise and double blind studies.

"I am a super fan of science," he says. "When we talk about vaccines, and if you question vaccines, you are said to be anti-science. The opposite is actually true … and today I'm going to prove to you [that] the science of vaccines has been fraudulent; it's a lie, it does not exist, and I want you to march out and demand that science begin immediately."

1-2 Karla McLaren, "The Art of Empathy" Part 1
What does it truly mean to have empathy? Can some of us be “hyper-empathic”? If empathy is something we feel we’re lacking, then how do we cultivate it? In this week’s episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami speaks with author and social science researcher Karla McLaren about the subject of her new book and audio learning program The Art of Empathy, including the six aspects of empathy that we can all learn to develop within ourselves in order to transform our relationships.

2-3 Karla McLaren, "The Art of Empathy" Part 2
Tami Simon speaks with Karla McLaren, an award-winning author, social science and empathy researcher, and educator. With Sounds True, Karla has created the book and audio series The Language of Emotions: What Your Feelings Are Trying to Tell You, as well as the new book and audio series The Art of Empathy: A Complete Guide to Life’s Most Essential Skill. In the second half of this two-part interview, Tami speaks with Karla about two unusual skills she teaches called “conscious complaining” and “ethical empathic gossip”; the concept that there is no such thing as a positive or negative emotion; and how a feeling of hatred can be an important key to working with the shadow part of our psyche.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 20

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #982 - Manafort and the Snipers: The Azov Battalion and the 'Russia-Gate' Psy-Op"

Continuing and deepening analysis of the profound Ukrainian fascist connection to the “Russia-Gate” disinformation inundating the American political and journalistic landscapes, this program highlights circumstances surrounding the sniper shootings at the Maidan demonstrations.

Those sniper shootings were the key circumstance generating international outrage against the Yanukovich regime and precipitating the rise of the OUN/B Ukrainain fascist successor organizations. Recorded the day after former Yanukovuch adviser and Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was indicted by [VERY] special prosecutor Robert Mueller, this program supplements discussion from FTR #981.

Distilling information concerning the sniper attacks, we review the possibility that Manafort might have played an advisory role in the sniper shootings, that the shootings might have been a provocation and examine the role of the Nazi Azov battalion and its proponents and component figures in connection with the Maidan shootings and the “Russia-Gate” propaganda.

We wonder if recent attacks in Ukraine might be elements of a “sanitization” operation, aimed at eliminating participants in the Maidan shootings (provocation?), while blaming the violence (of course) on Russia.

Initially heard on KPFK Saturdays, 10am
http://www.ralphnaderradiohour.com

2-3 Alfred McCoy, "2030: The End of U.S. Empire"
Recorded Seattle, WA on October 25, 2017

It’s most likely historians will mark the War on Terror, declared by George W. Bush in 2001, as when the U.S. went into precipitous decline. The rapid military expansion into multiple countries was classic imperial overreach. The era of the U.S. as the sole superpower is drawing to a close. China is challenging U.S. global hegemony. And it is doing so primarily on the economic front. It lets Washington spend trillions on wars and the pricey weapons to fight them. China, in the meantime, is constructing long term economic partnerships and alliances with countries all over the world. It is also building up its military but will not risk a war with the U.S. China had a bad couple of centuries, but it’s back, big time. The trends all point to 2030 when China passes the U.S.

Alfred McCoy is professor of history at the University of Wisconsin. He is the author of the classic The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade. He is the recipient the Association of Asian Studies’ Kahin Prize. He is also the author of Policing America's Empire, Torture and Impunity and In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global Power

"Real Change"

How can we manifest the world we want, and who we want to be? Actor-activist Danny Glover and Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, former CEO of Green For All, show how one sure path to resilience is to build community and social movements. That requires learning how to reach out across our differences – and it gets really personal. From http://www.bioneers.org 1 (877) BIONEER

FUNDRAISER

12-2 Saturday With Sheehan (Recorded December 2)

The latest in a monthly webinar recorded live.

The Peoples Advocate, the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan, is now available at www.romeroinstitute.org Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working-class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, DC-based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer.
In The Peoples Advocate, Sheehan details "the inside story" of over a dozen historically significant American legal cases of the 20th Century, all of which he litigated. The remarkable cases covered in the book include both The Pentagon Papers Case in 1971 and The Watergate Burglary Case in 1973. In addition, Sheehan served as the Chief Attorney on The Karen Silkwood Case in 1976, which revealed the CIA's Israeli Desk had been smuggling 98% bomb-grade plutonium to the State of Israel and to Iran. In 1984, he was the Chief Trial Counsel on The American Sanctuary Movement Case, establishing the right of American church workers to provide assistance to Central American political refugees fleeing Guatemalan and Salvadorian "death squads." His involvement with the sanctuary movement ultimately led to Sheehan's famous Iran/Contra Federal Civil Racketeering Case against the Reagan/Bush Administration, which he investigated, initiated, filed, and then litigated. The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment of over a dozen of the top-ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration. He is currently lead attorney in the Dakota Access Pipeline actions. Produced by www.ETLetsTalk.com Video posted at:

12-12:30 Vaccine Update

12:30-1:30 Karla McLaren, "The Gifts of ALL Emotions - Including Depression"
Karla McLaren is an award-winning author, social science researcher, and educator whose empathic approach to emotions informs her studies of sociology, anthropology, neurology, and cognitive psychology. With Sounds True, Karla has most recently contributed to the anthology Darkness Before Dawn: Redefining the Journey Through Depression. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Karla and Tami Simon discuss depression as an essential human emotion-one that may carry important messages about what's no longer working for you. They also talk about the questions you can ask of your emotions to determine their cause and the course of action they are asking you to take. Finally, Tami and Karla speak on the necessity of understanding and embracing the full range of human emotions-even those you deem unpleasant-in order to live a fuller, healthier life.

1:30-2:30 Caroline Adams Miller: "Getting Grit"
Caroline Miller is one of the world's foremost experts in positive psychology and the author of books such as Creating Your Best Life and My Name Is Caroline. With Sounds True, she has recently published Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Caroline discuss the concept of "grit"-the ability to stay passionate and persistent in one's long-term goals even in the face of considerable hardship. Caroline explains the different kinds of grit, including "false grit" that encourages stubbornness or flatters the ego. Finally, Tami and Caroline talk about the startling fact that we don't become happy when we are successful; rather, we become successful because we're happy first. (56 minutes)

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 13
FUNDRAISER

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #981 - The Ukrainian Fascist Foundation of the 'Russia-Gate' Psy-Op"

IN FTR #967, WE NOTED THE UKRAINIAN FASCIST AFFILIATION OF ANDREI ARTEMENKO, AUKRAINIAN MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT WHO WORKED WITH CIA AND FBI-CONNECTED TRUMP BUSINESS ASSOCIATE FELIX SATER. ALLEGED BY OUR MEDIA AND GOVERNMENT TO HAVE SIGNIFIED "RUSSIAN INFLUENCE" ON THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION, THIS SATER/ARTEMENKO GAMBIT WAS ACTUALLY AN ANTI-RUSSIAN CONSPIRACY.

In this program, we highlight the profound extent to which the "evidence" in the Russia-Gate "investigation" tracks back to the very same OUN/B successor organizations we have covered in so many of our previous programs:
1.-A story noting the probable Dnipropetrovsk origin of the missile technology apparently facilitating North Korea's guided missile technology documented the political affiliation of Igor Kolomoisky [Kolomoiskoy], governor of the "Dnipro" district: " . . . . So, among the Kolomoisky-backed militias was the Azov battalion whose members marched with Swastikas and other Nazi insignias. . . . . . . . In response to the reports of possible Ukrainian collusion in North Korea's missile program, Oleksandr Turchynov, secretary of the Ukrainian national security and defense council, issued a bizarre denial suggesting that The New York Times and U.S. intelligence agencies were pawns of Russia. . . . Press reports about Turchynov's statement left out two salient facts: that as the interim President following the February 2014 coup, Turchynov ordered Right Sektor militants to begin the bloody siege of rebel-held Sloviansk, a key escalation in the conflict, and that Turchynov was the one who appointed Kolomoisky to be the ruler of Dnipropetrovsk."
2.-The journalistic viewpoint on a Ukrainian hacker allegedly used by "Russian hackers" against the U.S. comes from Anton Gerashchenko, part of the same milieu as Pravy Sektor, Azov, etc. Gerashchenko is, in fact, an apologist for Azov, as discussed in FTR #'s 803, 804, 808, 818: " . . . . Security experts were initially left scratching their heads when the Department of Homeland Security on Dec. 29 released technical evidence of Russian hacking that seemed to point not to Russia, but rather to Ukraine. . . A member of Ukraine's Parliament with close ties to the security services, Anton Gerashchenko, said that the interaction was online or by phone and that the Ukrainian programmer had been paid to write customized malware without knowing its purpose, only later learning it was used in Russian hacking. . . . It is not clear whether the specific malware the programmer created was used to hack the D.N.C. servers. . . ."
3.-Reading between the lines, an otherwise characteristically propagandized New York Times article encapsulated critically important information: ". . . . While still politically influenced, Ukrainian law enforcement is no longer a swamp of incompetence and corruption. It has been able to monitor Mr. Manafort's former business associates and turn up evidence of Russian hacking in the 2016 United States election, in part owing to American support. . . ."
4.-Exemplifying the Ukrainian fascists at the epicenter of "Russia-Gate" are a group of Ukrainian hackers, working in tandem with fascist politicians like the aforementioned Anton Gerashchenko. The hacker/Ukrainian fascist link spawned the "PropOrNot" list of "Russian/Kremlin/Putin" dupes in the U.S. media: This list was compiled by the Ukrainian intelligence service, interior ministry and-ahem-hackers: ". . . . One of the more frightening policies enacted by the current oligarch-nationalist regime in Kiev is an online blacklist [42] of journalists accused of collaborating with pro-Russian 'terrorists.' [43] The website, 'Myrotvorets' [43] or 'Peacemaker'-was set up by Ukrainian hackers working with state intelligence and police, all of which tend to share the same ultranationalist ideologies as Parubiy and the newly-appointed neo-Nazi chief of the National Police. . . . The website is designed to frighten and muzzle journalists from reporting anything but the pro-nationalist party line, and it has the backing of government officials, spies and police-including the SBU (Ukraine's successor to the KGB), the powerful Interior Minister Avakov and his notorious far-right deputy, Anton Geraschenko. Ukraine's journalist blacklist website-operated by Ukrainian hackers working with state intelligence-led to a rash of death threats against the doxxed journalists, whose email addresses, phone numbers and other private information was posted anonymously to the website.
5.-A Ukrainian activist named Alexandra Chalupa has been instrumental in distributing the "Russia did it" disinformation to Hillary Clinton and influencing the progress of the disinformation in the media. " . . . . One of the key media sources [46] who blamed the DNC hacks on Russia, ramping up fears of crypto-Putinist infiltration, is a Ukrainian-American lobbyist working for the DNC. She is Alexandra Chalupa-described as the head of the Democratic National Committee's opposition research on Russia and on Trump, and founder and president of the Ukrainian lobby group 'US United With Ukraine Coalition' [47], which lobbied hard to pass a 2014 bill increasing loans and military aid to Ukraine, imposing sanctions on Russians, and tightly aligning US and Ukraine geostrategic interests. . . . In one leaked DNC email [50] earlier this year, Chalupa boasts to DNC Communications Director Luis Miranda that she brought Isikoff to a US-government sponsored Washington event featuring 68 Ukrainian journalists, where Chalupa was invited 'to speak specifically about Paul Manafort.' In turn, Isikoff named her as the key inside source [46] 'proving' that the Russians were behind the hacks, and that Trump's campaign was under the spell of Kremlin spies and sorcerers. . . ."
6.-Alleged "Russian agent" Paul Manafort-identified in FTR #919 as a probable "advance man" for regimes targeted for destabilization-may well have been the person who recommended to his "client" Yanukovich to fire on the Maidan demonstrators. It was that gunfire that signalled the end of Yanukovich's government. This reinforces Mr. Emory's take on Manafort. " . . . . The lawyer's demands for explanation spring from the hacking earlier this year of the iPhone of Mr Manafort's daughter, [since confirmed as genuine-D.E.] Andrea, with around 300,000 messages published in the dark web. One of the texts sent to her sister Jessica said: 'Don't fool yourself. That money we have is blood money.' It continued 'You know he has killed people in Ukraine? Knowingly, as a tactic to outrage the world and get focus on Ukraine. Remember when there were all those deaths taking place. A while back. About a year ago. Revolts and what not. Do you know whose strategy that was to cause that, to send those people get them slaughtered.' . . . ."
7.-Reinforcing the hypothesis that the Maidan shootings were a provocation is the disclosure by Ukraine's chief prosecutor that the rifles allegedly used to fire on the Maidan demonstrators were recovered by an alleged Yanukovich operative and leader of the snipers who was one of the demonstrators on the Maidan! " . . . Ukraine's Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko says that the man who helped the so-called "black hundred" of police task force Berkut, who had been shooting at protesters during the Revolution of Dignity, flee Kyiv and deliberately drowned their weapons to conceal evidence, was himself one of the participants of the Maidan protests. 'With the help of military counterintelligence, we have found weapons of the 'black hundred,' including a sniper rifle, which the entire country saw on footage showing the shooting at the protesters from outside the October Palace," he told the 112 Ukraine TV channel. . . . 'We found it with a large number of automatic rifles on the bottom of one of Kiev's lakes. They were cut and drowned in one batch by a single group, whose leader is one of the targets of our investigation. Unfortunately, this man who, according to our version, upon the orders of [former Interior Minister Vitaliy] Zakharchenko helped the 'black hundred' flee Kyiv, destroyed and drowned their weapons, he, himself, was with us on the Maidan,' Lutsenko said. . . . "
8.-The sniper activity in the Maidan must be weighed against the fact that Nazi-linked elements from the Azov milieu were serving as snipers in Kiev at the time. Were they connected to the shootings of demonstrators?
9.-The supposed "evidence" of Russian hacking in the U.S. election comes from CrowdStrike, whose co-founder and chief technology officer-Dmitry Alperovitch-is deeply tied to the NATO/OUN/B milieu installed in power in Ukraine: " . . . . Dmitri Alperovitch is also a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. The connection between Alperovitch and the Atlantic Council has gone largely unremarked upon, but it is relevant given that the Atlantic Council-which is is funded in part by the US State Department, NATO, the governments of Latvia and Lithuania, the Ukrainian World Congress, and the Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk-has been among the loudest voices calling for a new Cold War with Russia. As I pointed out in the pages of The Nation in November, the Atlantic Council has spent the past several years producing some of the most virulent specimens of the new Cold War propaganda. ...

1-2 Jason Stanley, "How Fascism Works" (Ralph Nader postponed one hour)

What is fascism? Michael Parenti, author and historian says, "Fascism historically has been used to secure the interests of large capitalist interests against the demands of popular democracy. Then and now, fascism has made irrational mass appeals in order to secure the rational ends of class domination." Fascism flourishes in times of economic insecurity and cultural backlash. Opportunistic politicians offer up a platter of racism, xenophobia and hyper-nationalism. They stoke fear and resentment using simplistic slogans such as "Drain the Swamp" and "Build the Wall." In the U.S. today, there is a whiff fascism in the air. Witness the march of white supremacists with torches held high in Charlottesville chanting "Blood and Soil," an old Nazi slogan and "Jews Will Not Replace Us." The president called them "very fine people." Jason Stanley is the Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. He is the author of Knowledge and Practical Interests, Language in Context, Know How and the award-winning How Propaganda Works. From Alternative Radio, 1 (800) 444-1977, www.alternativeradio.org

"The Difference Between Liberal and Progressive"

Dionne writes about politics in a twice-weekly column in the Washington Post and on the Post Partisan blog. He is also a senior fellow in governance Studies at the Brookings Institution (https://www.brookings.edu/), a government professor at Georgetown University and a frequent guest on NPR, ABC's This Week and MSNBC. He is the author of seven books, the latest of which is "One Nation Under Trump: A Guide For the Perplexed, the Disillusioned, the Desperate, and the Not Yet Deported."
"I don't see the same sharp distinctions between the center/left and the left right now in the U.S. or - as you put it - between liberals and progressives. For example, take the issue of universal healthcare. Some of my progressive friends say that only single-payer is the way to go. I have nothing against single-payer. It's a system that works in many countries. I also think that universal coverage that would essentially treat the health system as a public utility, which is kind of what you do in Germany or the Netherlands - that that would work as well. I think we should have a healthy argument about what's going to work better, not some argument that says only single-payer is the way to achieve universal coverage." E.J. Dionne

Patrick O'Malley: "Getting Grief Right"
Patrick O'Malley is a grief counselor with more than 35 years of experience. He has written many well-regarded articles on grieving, including the namesake New York Times article that inspired his new Sounds True book Getting Grief Right: Finding Your Story of Love in the Sorrow of Loss. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Patrick discuss his unique approach to grief and how it diverts from the popularly accepted five-stage model created by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross. Patrick asserts that the Kübler-Ross model, while helpful as a foundation, can actually create an emotional cage for people as they struggle to find the acceptance and closure that they expect to end their grieving. Tami and Patrick also talk about the odd way in which the concept "closure" became entwined with grief therapy and why sharing our stories of loss can be the most important step in the process. Finally, Patrick shares his own story of loss and explains that the simple act of being compassionately heard can be the most important step toward healing. Megan Devine: The Howl at the Center of Grief
Megan Devine is a mental health counselor who has become known as one of the most promising emerging voices in the field of grief therapy. With Sounds True, she has released the new book It's OK That You're Not OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn't Understand. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami speaks with Megan about It's OK That You're Not OK and the tragedy that inspired the book-the accidental drowning of her partner. With this in mind, Tami and Megan discuss "the wild howl at the center of grief," the challenge of shouldering things that only we can carry, and why "letting go" is a myth. They also talk about what you can do for someone enduring the grieving process and why it can be best simply to lend an understanding ear. Finally, Megan unravels the concept of "fixing" grief and why there is an intrinsic connection between grieving fully and loving well. From Sounds True 'Insights at the Edge' series. FUND DRIVE SCHEDULE

Dave Emory, "For the Record #980 Nazism, Anti-Gay Propaganda and Reproductive Rights"

With the Trump administration moving against gay rights and reproductive rights, and with the public attention largely focused on yet another mass murder in Las Vegas, we delve back into the archives for the benefit of newer and younger listeners.

On 2/28/1988, we recorded Miscellaneous Archive Show M13: Gay Rights, Reproductive Rights and the Third Reich, highlighting how the nascent, vigorous gay rights movement in Weimar Germany was a focal point for Nazi propaganda and political action.

Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld was the lynchpin of the strong gay liberation movement in Weimar Germany and, as a result, was a focal point of Nazi Party propaganda, fueled with the additional fodder of the fact that Hirschfeld was Jewish.

(We note, in passing, that the gay rights movement in Weimar Germany received considerable support from a segment of the country's feminist community grouped around Dr. Helena Stoecker.)

Historically, German attitudes toward homosexuality were mixed, with some regions manifesting a relatively liberal attitude and enforcement posture and others, an extremely reactionary position in both respects. Paragraph 175 was the official German statute making sex between adults of the same gender illegal. Again, the enforcement of Paragraph 175 was highly selective from a regional standpoint.)

In a manner directly foreshadowing U.S. right-wing propaganda in recent decades, the Nazi Party denounced Hirschfeld and homophile sexual activity as a product of, and a contributor to, the moral decay of the Weimar Republic and democracy in general.

Beginning with review of the suppression of gay rights groups and advocates in the immediate aftermath of Hitler's ascension, the program notes how the Nazi tactic of tarring their political opponents with the taint of "homosexuality" developed into a political/legal gambit of specifically targeting specific individuals within the Nazi party and German armed forces...

The latter part of the program relates how both homosexuality and abortion were ideologically and propagandistically conceptualized by the Nazis as twin opponents of the successful breeding of suitable numbers of young German men to fight the country's wars-a theme that U.S. right wingers have borrowed to argue against gay and abortion rights in this country.

Today, we're going to talk to her about the recent book she edited "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President."
"I think the first remedy we have to do urgently is to remove him from the presidency. It is a very pathology inducing, disease spreading situation, apart from the dangers of a nuclear holocaust or devastating wars, which are actually very real possibilities - by the way - for someone who is so divorced from reality and so attracted to violence as a solution for the way he feels inside." - Dr. Bandy Lee

Dr. Helen Caldicott: "North Korea, Donald Trump and the Threat of Nuclear War"
November 14, 2017

Helen Caldicott is an Australian physician author, and anti nuclear activist. She led campaigns against nuclear power and nuclear weapons, nuclear testing and radiation from uranium weapons and mining to nuclear waste.

The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War invited Dr. Helen Caldicott to speak at their September 2017 conference in Basel, Switzerland. At that conference she expressed her grave concern about Donald Trump's extraordinary messages against North Korea, threatening fire and fury and total annihilation.

And she is not alone with her concern. As I am recording this introduction on November 14, 2017, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is holding a public hearing on President Trump's unlimited authority to deploy nuclear weapons. It's the first time the Senate has examined the nuclear launch process in more than 40 years.
In August of this year listeners to NPR asked if Donald Trump can just launch nuclear weapons via the nuclear code that he has access to at all times. Here is a quote from the answer by Senior News Analyst Cokie Roberts. (Thanks to NPR - the clip aired on August 8, 2017.)

And thanks to The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War for the audio recording of this talk, made on September 14, 2017, in Basel, Switzerland. From TUC Radio, 1 (707) 463-2654, http://www.tucradio.org

Ethnobotanist and Indigenous rights advocate Mark Plotkin of the Amazon Conservation Team tells us how scientists are helping protect the people who will protect the land, and the age-old wisdom that's imperative for our future. 2:30-3:30 "From the Vault,"
Stan Freberg is a comedic legend His influence can be seen from Monty Python to South Park to Current television hit series Mad Men to the Late Night Comedy host lineup. Today on From The Vault, we memorialize this legend who passed away on Tuesday April 7th, 2015.

It all started in the most humble fashion. Born on August 7, 1926 in Pasadena California. The story goes that in 1944 at the age of 18 he jumped on a bus to "Hollywood" and landed on the doorstep of Warner Brother's Studio. He was hired immediately to begin voicing cartoon characters

In 1951 he began releasing Comedy albums with Capitol Records. He honed his craft at satire and parody from the beginning, taking on topics like McCarthyism, Politics, political correctness before that was even a term, pop culture including a stab at Elvis Presley's first hit record Heartbreak Hotel.

By 1957 he took over for radio legend Jack Benny on CBS hit comedy radio hour. He took a principled stand against allowing Jack Benny's Tobacco companies to advertise on his show which severely hampered it's success.
This only gave him fuel to turn up the satire volume in his work including... you guessed it.... commercials.

Let's hear a little from his CBS radio Program The Stan Freberg Show from August 11, 1957. This program was broadcast on Pacifica Station KPFK in Los Angeles thanks to overnight legend Roy Tuckman and fellow old time radio fan Bobb Lynes.

In 1961, Stan Freberg recorded arguably his greatest comedy album Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America: The Early years. Pacifica Station KPFA thought so too, and on the Fourth of July 1964 played the entire album to celebrate America's birthday. We play side 1 of this recording from 1961.

And now we present KPFK host John Schneider's 1999 interview with Stan Freberg that allows us a fly-on-the-wall peek inside Freberg's view of the world AND presents some of Stan's best routines.

12-1 Vaccine Update: 'Cammy Beton MD, CDC Admits There is No Science Behind the Annual Flu Vaccine

The Vaxxed Team recently interviewed Dr. Cammy Benton from North Carolina who is board certified in both Family Medicine and Functional Medicine.
Dr. Benton related that through all of her years of medical training, including 4 years in residency, that the only thing she was taught in regards to vaccines was that they were "safe and effective." She stated that they were told to discard the vaccine inserts, as they were all "lawyer jargon..."
She became obsessed with the topic, since it had already destroyed the health of her three children. She wanted to learn which vaccines were useful and which ones were not.
Dr. Benton finally came to the conclusion that the risks associated with the diseases that were being vaccinated against was not serious enough to risk the side effects of the vaccines.

1-2:30 Jeff Foster: The Way of Rest
Jeff Foster is a spiritual teacher whose methods do not belong to any one lineage or style. He teaches a form of total acceptance-a dismantling of the armor of the heart so that we can live vibrantly in the here and now. With Sounds True, Jeff has published several books and audio programs, including 'The Way of Rest: Finding The Courage to Hold Everything in Love.' In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Jeff and Tami Simon speak on the obstacles that stand between us and rest, and how learning to abide in discomfort is a difficult but necessary step to achieving true rest. Reading an excerpt from his newest book, Jeff explains why it's actually a daring act to choose to rest. Finally, Jeff and Tami talk about depression and the desire to die, and why that desire can be a gateway to a deeper, richer understanding of the self. From Sounds True Insights at the Edge. 2:30-3:30 Karen Brody: "Daring to Rest"
Karen Brody is the founder of the Daring to Rest™ Program for Women, which promotes women's empowerment and increased health through yoga nidra meditation. With Sounds True, Karen has published 'Daring to Rest: Reclaim Your Power' with Yoga Nidra Rest Meditation. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Karen and Tami Simon have a serious discussion about the epidemic of burnout and exhaustion in modern culture. This is especially true for women, who are often held to the societal expectation that they serve the needs of those around them before they ever consider taking even the most necessary rest. Karen offers yoga nidra as a one part of the solution to this wave of fatigue, describing how her own practice and the cultivation of turiya-"the sleep of the yogis"-helped her move past a period of intense, chronic sleeplessness. Finally, Karen and Tami speak on the liberation in abandoning perfectionism and how yoga nidra can be folded into the course of our daily lives. WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 29

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #979 - Nazism, Anti-Gay and Anti-Feminist Propaganda and the Fritz Haarmann Incident"

Furthermore, a mass killing by homosexual Fritz Haarmann terrorized Weimar Germany, fueled Nazi anti-gay propaganda and reinforced the public perception in the German populace that the situation was "out of control."

A major contributing factor to the impact of this Nazi propaganda was the Fritz Haarman incident...

1-2 The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
Ralph spends the hour with fraud expert, Frank Abagnale, inspiration for the Spielberg film, "Catch Me If You Can." They talk about how to protect yourself from identity theft and other scams in our high tech, digital economy. Plus listener questions!

One pilot, stockbroker, and of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history, Frank Abagnale enjoyed a brief but notorious criminal career during which he assumed various identities - including those of airline doctor - in order to pass off approximately $2.5 million in phony checks before he reached the age of twenty-one. His criminal adventures inspired Steven Spielberg's film, Catch Me If You Can and the Tony-Award winning musical of the same name. Now, Mr. Abagnale is one of the world's most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents. For over forty years he has worked with, advised, and consulted with hundreds of financial institutions, corporations and government agencies around the world. In addition to "Catch Me If You Can," his books include "The Art of the Steal," "The Real U Guide to Identity Theft"and "Stealing Your Life."
"Obviously technology breeds crime. It always has, and it always will. And there always be people using technology in a negative, self-serving way. So, it's a lot easier today to do some of the things that I did before." - Frank Abagnale

2-3 Eric Sirotkin, "War or Peace in Korea"
Recorded in Boulder, CO on October 21, 2017.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. What can you say? They are lightweights fighting in the heavyweight division while the fate of possibly millions are at risk. Two heads of state trading taunts and insults back and forth like kids in a schoolyard. Trump declared that talking with North Korea is a "waste of time" and threatened to "totally destroy" that country by unleashing "fire and fury like the world has never seen." On his trip to Asia he softened his line a bit by inviting North Korea to "come to the table" and "make a deal." He then reverted to more saber-rattling. The U.S. military has been in South Korea since 1945. There is no peace treaty formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War. Maybe that would be a good place to start. Tensions must be defused. The alternative is catastrophic war.

Eric Sirotkin is a human rights lawyer. His peacemaking activities have taken him to North and South Korea. He helped found the New Mexico Human Rights Coalition and the National Lawyers Guild Korean Peace Project. He is the recipient of the City of Albuquerque's Human Rights Award. He is the author of 'Witness: A Lawyer's Journey from Litigation to Liberation.' From Alternative Radio, 1 (800) 444-1977, http://www.alternativeradio.org
