Continuing the course on “Trajectory of Justice”.
May 12, 2015. “14th Amendment - Due Process’’
This class takes a closer look at the Fourteenth Amendment and its role in substantiating due process of law in its first and fifth clauses.
While the Fifth Amendment procedurally declared one’s right to due process, the Fourteenth Amendment, as an integral part of the Reconstruction Amendments arising after the Civil War, grants Congress, and more generally the federal government, the right to enforce due process in the face of indiscretion on the part of a state. Therefore, the Fourteenth Amendment inherently restricts states’ rights as part of the Reconstruction Era, proclaiming that natural law rights of individuals cannot be violated by state or federal governments.
The class continued to reference various court cases that established the federal government’s right to enforce due process and enumerate each right involved in due process. The Ninth Amendment is further discussed regarding rights that are inherently protected by natural law even though they have not yet been enumerated.
The next class will also focus on the Fourteenth Amendment and its “Equal Protection Clause.”

2-2:30 World War I - The Christmas Truce of 1914
Silent Night in trenches of the Western Front
The Christmas Truce was an unofficial cease-fire on parts of the Western Front. Guns fell silent for one to several days. Soldiers emerged from the trenches and talked, exchanged gifts and kicked around a soccer ball. Trenches were close in some places, separated by 50 yards or less.
The Story of the Christmas Truce WWI is a documentary film about this spontaneous cease-fire. Thanks to historians Peter Hart, Taff Gillingham and Robin Schaefer, and their choice of rare documentary photos, footage and archived letters from soldiers of both sides. The documentary focuses on the section of the trenches where British and German soldiers were facing each other.
This radio program goes into distribution on December 13, 2022, – by coincidence on the same day that nearly 1,000 faith leaders called for a temporary ceasefire in the War in Ukraine. They write that the way out of the war in Ukraine will not be a military solution and believe that a Christmas Truce offers an opportunity for moral clarity that could be the first step toward a negotiated peace.
Thanks for excerpts from the 50 minute documentary entitled “Silent Night: The Story of the Christmas Truce WWI”. The film is posted on the Timeline history channel for World History Documentaries.

2:30-3 Joanna Macy - Inspiration for December 2022.
“On the way to destroying our world we are beginning to wake up from a millennia long sleep.”
Here are excerpts from a conversation between the scholar of Buddhism and activist Joanna Macy and Vicki Robin, a writer, speaker, and host of the What Could Possibly Go Right podcast. Robin’s goal is to interview people who see far and serve the common good and help us to see more clearly and act more courageously.
Joanna Macy wrote: “The most remarkable feature of this historical moment is not that we are on the way to destroying our world – it’s that we are beginning to wake up – as if from a millennia long sleep.”
Joanna Macy is an author, teacher and a scholar of Deep Ecology. She is a respected voice in movements for peace and justice and in opposition to nuclear weapons and war. She is able to find a connection between Buddhist thought and modern science.
With gratitude to Joanna Macy and Vicki Robin and encouragement to listeners and readers to find out more about their work here is a reminder of their websites:

3-4 Marie Ranjbar, ‘’Iran: Zan, Zendegi, Azadi / Woman, Life, Freedom’’
Program #RANM001. Recorded in Boulder, CO on November 18, 2022.
Since mid-September, tens of thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets across the country to protest the government’s treatment of girls and women and in particular mandatory dress codes. These historic demonstrations center on women’s socio-political rights and democratic governance in Iran. The government has brutally responded. Hundreds have been killed, including children. Many thousands have been arrested. Despite the regime’s violent crackdown, protests have only widened. Demonstrators are shouting “Death to the Dictator.” The Islamic Republic of Iran, now in its 43rd year, has never faced such sustained and widespread opposition. Can it remain in power? The slogan of the protest movement is Zan, Zendegi, Azadi/Woman. Life. Freedom. Interviewed by David Barsamian. Recorded at KGNU.
Marie Ranjbar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Colorado–Boulder. Her research examines social movements in Iran and integrates feminist political geography with critical human rights and decolonial feminist theory.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, DECEMBER 28
12-1 Dave Emory, For the Record #1269: Interview #8 with Jim DiEugenio about ‘JFK Revisited”.
In this broadcast, we continue our discussion with the heroic Jim DiEugenio, selected by Oliver Stone to write the screenplay for his documentary JFK Revisited. Jim also wrote the book containing transcripts of both the two-hour and four-hour versions of the documentary and supplemental interviews.
No discovery by the ARRB was more important than its uncovering of the Operation Northwoods contingency plan to set up a provocation to justify a U.S. invasion of Cuba.
The lawsuit filed by the Mary Ferrell Foundation aims at compelling further disclosure about Northwoods.
At loggerheads with then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lyman Lemnitzer, JFK replaced him with Maxwell Taylor, unaware that Taylor and Lemnitzer were close.
The ARRB faced serious resistance from the Secret Service in its attempts to shed further light on the JFK assassination. Although prohibited by law from doing so, the Secret Service destroyed documents.
Particularly noteworthy are documents from the agency about two attempts on JFK’s life in 1963 that may very well have been part of the constellation of events leading up to Dallas on 11/22.
That agency was particularly reluctant to share records about the two attempts on JFK’s life.
ARRB member Douglas Horne uncovered some fascinating information about pay records of both Oswald during his last months in the Marines and TSBD manager Roy Truly, Oswald’s supervisor at the building.

Gabor Mate’ “A Personal of Healing into Wholeness in a Toxic Culture”
Celebrated author and physician Dr. Gabor Maté has become one of the world’s foremost voices on the journey of healing from trauma—in large part because it is a path he walks himself. In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Dr. Maté about his new book, The Myth of Normal, sharing breakthrough insights into the nature of trauma and some of the necessary steps for our personal and collective recovery.
Give a listen as Tami and Dr. Maté discuss the truth of our interconnectedness; disease as a process, not a distinct entity; self-compassion and honoring our suffering; an inquiry practice—the happy childhood challenge; the emotional work that healing requires; the concepts of wholeness and recovery; the essence of trauma—disconnection from the Self; experiencing your own natural goodness; psychedelics and the veil between the conscious and the unconscious; closing the gap between science and the practice of medicine; learning how to say no before your body does; and more.
