The primary “jumping off point” of this program and the foundation of the previous two broadcasts is the political and commercial career of Baba Ramdev. A major supporter of Narendra Modi, his BJP and the Hindutva fascist RSS, for which the BJP is a political
front, Ramdev runs a highly successful business career centered on the teaching of yoga and the marketing of “ayurvedic” foods, cosmetics and medicines. In turn, his business interests are inextricably linked with Modi, the BJP and the RSS.
(In FTR #’s 795, 988 and 989, 990, 991, 992, and 1015, we detailed the Hindutva fascism of Narendra Modi, his BJP Party and supportive elements, tracing the evolution of Hindutva fascism through the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi to the present time.)
With Modi and the BJP running India, Ramdev’s Patanjali food business has also dovetailed directly with India’s military development and potential strategic interests. A thought-provoking and possibly valid comparison might be seen between Ramdev’s operations
and the operations of the Unification Church of Sun Myung Moon. In FTR #970, among other programs, we examined the Moon operation as an extension around the world and down the decades of the Patriotic and Ultranationalist Societies of Japan. A religious, commercial
and fascist political entity, the Unification Church bears many striking ideological and operational similarities to the Ramdev organization.
Beginning with review of ideological and operational links between RSS Hindutva fascists and the followers of Hitler and Mussolini, we highlight key features of what may seem to many to be a classic case of political “strange bedfellows.” ...

On today's edition of From the Vault we turn to the subject that brings smiles all-around' humor!
In 2010, the Pacifica Radio Archives decided to incorporate humor as an official subject into our two-day national broadcast and fundraiser.
Special project producers Haunani Singer and Curtis Metcalf combed the vault and they came up with some wonderful examples of humor in the progressive movement.
Some of the names you might expect like superstar comedians like Lily Tomlin, George Carlin and Groucho Marx. But we also included people who may not have mad a living in the field of comedy, but were humorists just the same' names like Molly Ivins, Mort Sahl, Studs Terkel, Quentin Crisp, Jessica Mitford, Kate Clinton and John Lennon.
Naturally, though, we begin this show with perhaps Pacifica's most famous alumnus, Richard Pryor, who lent his voice to KPFA's fund drive in the summer of 1971.

Rick Doblin, PhD, is a Harvard-trained researcher and the founder of MAPS—the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. Rick and MAPS work to develop a legal framework for the application of psychedelic drugs both as medication and for personal psychological growth. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Rick about the current clinical research surrounding the use of MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as many other possibilities for other psychedelic-assisted therapies. They talk about the current "psychedelic renaissance" in therapeutic treatment, reflecting on some of the risks of such drug-assisted regimens and the need for careful integration of psychedelic experiences. With this in mind, Tami and Rick discuss his relationship with the Zendo Project, a department of MAPS devoted to helping individuals who are having emotionally challenging psychedelic experiences at festivals and events. Finally, Rick explains his own lifelong relationship with psychedelic drugs, including his hopes for future treatments and a national "coming out party" of prominent individuals who can attest to the difference psychedelics have made in their lives.

Rebroadcast from the Renegade Economists series of 2017 Kate Raworth came to international attention in 2017 with the publication of her most recent book: Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think like a 21st-Century Economist. She critiques the Gross Domestic Product system of accounting – including the so-called Green or sustainable growth models.
In Kate Raworth’ doughnut model the goal is to raise the well being of humans trapped inside the doughnut hole, while placing limits on climate change and pollution that are near or have crossed the outer circle of the doughnut.
Kate Raworth is teaching at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, and at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Over the last two decades she has worked as Senior Researcher at Oxfam, and as a co-author of the United Nation’s Human Development Report.
Kate Raworth has written extensively for media including The Guardian, The New Statesman, Newsweek, and Wired, and has done programs with BBC Radio 4, The World Service, ABC and NPR, as well as television with Thom Hartmann, Laura Flanders, CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC, and CBC.

2-3 From the Vault "George Carlin and Seven Words"
In October 1973, WBAI 99.5 FM host Paul Gorman broadcast George Carlin's "Filthy Words" bit over the New York City airwaves during a weekday drive-time slot, a piece which Gorman had not edited or "bleeped" out in any way. His audience certainly raised their eyebrows as they digested every word that spewed from Carlin's mouth as he let it rip. Rich- very rich- with expletives, the broadcast would become the genesis for one of most important landmark Supreme Court decisions on free-speech in the last 30 years. The fallout from that historic broadcast as recorded in the vaults of Pacifica Radio Archives is the subject for this week's episode of From the Vault.
F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, or the "Carlin Case" as it is now commonly called, was really born from the action of one lone radio listener whom filed a complaint with FCC some weeks after the original "Filthy Words" broadcast in 1973 on WBAI. After a volley of threats from the FCC, Pacifica Foundation (which owns and operates WBAI) dug in its heels and began to fight back. After an initial court victory by Pacifica, the FCC appealed to the Supreme Court, which in 1978 rejected Pacifica's arguments and effectively established itself as a moral authority on what's decent and what's not. The primary focal point of these two programs and supplemental discussion in the program to follow is the political and commercial career of Baba Ramdev. A major supporter of Narendra Modi, his BJP and the Hindutva fascist RSS, for which the BJP is a political front, Ramdev runs a highly successful business career centered on the teaching of yoga and the marketing of “ayurvedic” foods, cosmetics and medicines. In turn, his business interests are inextricably linked with Modi, the BJP and the RSS.
(In FTR #’s 795, 988 and 989, 990, 991, 992, and 1015, we detailed the Hindutva fascism of Narendra Modi, his BJP Party and supportive elements, tracing the evolution of Hindutva fascism through the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi to the present time.)
With Modi and the BJP running India, Ramdev’s Patanjali food business has also dovetailed directly with India’s military development and potential strategic interests. A thought-provoking and possibly valid comparison might be seen between Ramdev’s operations and the operations of the Unification Church of Sun Myung Moon. In FTR #970, among other programs, we examined the Moon operation as an extension around the world and down the decades of the Patriotic and Ultranationalist Societies of Japan. A religious, commercial and fascist political entity, the Unification Church bears many striking ideological and operational similarities to the Ramdev organization.

Finkelstein has written of his Jewish parents' experiences during World War II. His mother, Maryla Husyt, grew up in Warsaw, survived the Warsaw Ghetto, the Majdanek concentration camp, and two slave labor camps. Her first husband died in the war. She considered the day of her liberation as the most horrible day of her life, as she realized that she was alone, her parents and siblings gone. Norman's father, Zacharias Finkelstein, active in Hashomer Hatzair, was a survivor of both the Warsaw Ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp.[7]
After the war they met in a displaced persons camp in Linz, Austria, and then emigrated to the United States, where his father became a factory worker and his mother a homemaker and later a bookkeeper. Finkelstein's mother was an ardent pacifist. Both his parents died in 1995.[8] Of his parents, Finkelstein has recalled that "they saw the world through the prism of the Nazi Holocaust. They were eternally indebted to the Soviet Union (to whom they attributed the defeat of the Nazis), and so anyone who was anti-Soviet they were extremely harsh on".[9] They supported the Soviet Union's approval of the creation of the State of Israel, as enunciated by Gromyko, who stated that the Jews had earned the right to a state, but thought that Israel had sold its soul to the West and "refused to have any truck with it".[9] (From Wikipedia)

We begin with a montage produced by Pacifica Radio Archives one year after 9/11 - voices include Bertrand Russell, Howard Zinn, Dennis Kucinich, Gore Vidal, June Jordan, Michael Moore, Angela Davis, Thich Nhat Hanh, Mumia Abu Jamal, Cornel West, to name a few. Then, WBAI producer Michael Haskins recalls his journey to WBAI studios in the heart of the financial district in the midst of the attack, and former Pacifica producer and author Laurie Garrett muses on the events and consequences of 9/11, along with Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, Tariq Ali, Arundhati Roy, and others.

Daniel Sheehan is a renowned Public Interest Attorney who speaks on Lessons From Landmark Cases Applied To Prosecuting 9/11.
'The Peoples Advocate,' the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan, is now available through our online store! Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working-class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, DC-based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer.

The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment of over a dozen of the top-ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration.

Much has been said about Donald Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to become a Supreme Court justice, replacing Anthony Kennnedy.
In this program, we highlight extensive networking between the Trump and Kennedy families and, in turn, some apparent "deep networking" between some of the individuals in the Trump/Kennedy nexus and institutions linked to key elements of the remarkable and deadly Bormann flight capital network.
Deutsche Bank and the shadow of the I.G. Farben chemical complex figure into the latter part of this equation.
The connections between the family of Anthony Kennedy and the Trump milieu run deep. Anthony Kennedy's son Justin was Trump's banker at Deutsche Bank. In FTR #919, we analyzed a New York Times article highlighting Donald Trump's altogether opaque real estate developments and evidence that those projects had significant links to elements of the Bormann capital network.
In that program we set forth the primary role of Deutsche Bank in financing Trump's real estate projects.

Since 1998, the bank has led or participated in loans of at least $2.5 billion to companies affiliated with Mr. Trump, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of public records and people familiar with the matter. That doesn't include at least another $1 billion in loan commitments that Deutsche Bank made to Trump-affiliated entities. The long-standing connection makes Frankfurt-based Deutsche Bank, which has a large U.S. operation and has been grappling with reputational problems and an almost 50% stock-price decline, the financial institution with probably the strongest ties to the controversial New York businessman. . . ."
The fact that Deutsche Bank is the primary financial backer of "Trump Incorporated" is of primary importance. The bank is central to the Bormann capital network.

One dictionary defines fascism as, "A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism." The first fascist party was founded by Mussolini in Italy in 1915. Its etymology is traced to the Latin word meaning a bundle of rods tied around an axe, an ancient Roman symbol of authority. Today, the term, for many, immediately conjures up horrific images of storm troopers. But contemporary fascism has undergone a major wardrobe change. Could it happen here? Some see elements of it now with what is called populism, America First, coupled with a largely imagined past, Make America Great Again. The media are denounced as "the enemy of the people," a phrase Stalin used. Critics of the Leader are bullied and insulted.

Daniel Sheehan is a renowned Public Interest Attorney who speaks on Lessons From Landmark Cases Applied To Prosecuting 9/11.
'The Peoples Advocate,' the autobiography of American Constitutional Trial Attorney Daniel Sheehan, is now available through our online store! Sheehan traces his personal journey from his working-class roots through Harvard Law School and his initial career in private practice. His early disenchantment led to his return for further study at Harvard Divinity School, and rethinking the nature of his career. Eventually his role as President and Chief Trial Counselor for the famous Washington, DC-based Christic Institute would help define his role as America's preeminent cause lawyer.
In 'The Peoples Advocate,' Sheehan details "the inside story" of over a dozen historically significant American legal cases of the 20th Century, all of which he litigated. The remarkable cases covered in the book include both The Pentagon Papers Case in 1971 and The Watergate Burglary Case in 1973. In addition, Sheehan served as the Chief Attorney on The Karen Silkwood Case in 1976, which revealed the CIA's Israeli Desk had been smuggling 98% bomb-grade plutonium to the State of Israel and to Iran. In 1984, he was the Chief Trial Counsel on The American Sanctuary Movement Case, establishing the right of American church workers to provide assistance to Central American political refugees fleeing Guatemalan and Salvadorian "death squads." His involvement with the sanctuary movement ultimately led to Sheehan's famous Iran/Contra Federal Civil Racketeering Case against the Reagan/Bush Administration, which he investigated, initiated, filed, and then litigated. The resulting "Iran/Contra Scandal" nearly brought down that Administration, leading Congress to consider the impeachment of over a dozen of the top-ranking officials of the Reagan/Bush Administration.
'The Peoples Advocate' is the "real story" of these and many other historic American cases, told from the unique point of view of a central lawyer.

Much has been said about Donald Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to become a Supreme Court justice, replacing Anthony Kennnedy.
In this program, we highlight extensive networking between the Trump and Kennedy families and, in turn, some apparent "deep networking" between some of the individuals in the Trump/Kennedy nexus and institutions linked to key elements of the remarkable and deadly Bormann flight capital network.
Deutsche Bank and the shadow of the I.G. Farben chemical complex figure into the latter part of this equation.
The connections between the family of Anthony Kennedy and the Trump milieu run deep. Anthony Kennedy's son Justin was Trump's banker at Deutsche Bank. In FTR #919, we analyzed a New York Times article highlighting Donald Trump's altogether opaque real estate developments and evidence that those projects had significant links to elements of the Bormann capital network.
In that program we set forth the primary role of Deutsche Bank in financing Trump's real estate projects.

The fact that Deutsche Bank is the primary financial backer of "Trump Incorporated" is of primary importance. The bank is central to the Bormann capital network.

One dictionary defines fascism as, "A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism." The first fascist party was founded by Mussolini in Italy in 1915. Its etymology is traced to the Latin word meaning a bundle of rods tied around an axe, an ancient Roman symbol of authority. Today, the term, for many, immediately conjures up horrific images of storm troopers. But contemporary fascism has undergone a major wardrobe change. Could it happen here? Some see elements of it now with what is called populism, America First, coupled with a largely imagined past, Make America Great Again. The media are denounced as "the enemy of the people," a phrase Stalin used. Critics of the Leader are bullied and insulted.

Overcoming adversity alone is a tough road to hoe but when you act with others it’s not as difficult. There is nothing like solidarity. There’s unity and strength in numbers. Most movements have very modest beginnings. Take women’s rights. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a handful of other woman met in Seneca Falls in Upstate New York in 1848 to launch the women’s rights movement. The odds were against them. The naysayers were out in force with their patronizing comments such as: Why bother? Don’t get involved. Get back to the kitchen. Yet those women and the many who followed them were able to achieve much. Struggles continue. Today the #MeToo movement is challenging patriarchy by calling out men for sexual abuse and harassment and insisting on equal pay for equal work. Citizen action is easier then we think. Ralph Nader, a legendary figure, has spent a lifetime fighting on behalf of ordinary people. The Atlantic named him one of the hundred most influential figures in U.S. history. Founder of Public Citizen, he is a long-time advocate for consumer safety and workers' rights. He rose to fame in the 1960s when he took on General Motors and its unsafe Corvair car. His 1965 book Unsafe At Any Speed not only created a sensation but also was instrumental in the enactment of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. His efforts helped create the Environmental Protection Agency. He has exposed the misdeeds of the corporate sector as well as of the political system. In recent years he has led the struggles around the WTO, corporate welfare, and single payer health care. He is the author of numerous books including Breaking Through Power and To the Ramparts.

As indicated in the title, this show updates some paths of inquiry and introduces others.
Discussion begins with the origins of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPO). The party has its genesis with post World War II Third Reich veterans. Its first head was SS General Anton Reinthaller: ” . . . . an honorary Brigadeführer (Major General) in the SS.[1] Having initially joined the SS in December 1938 (with the membership number 292,775)[2] he achieved his highest rank on 30 January 1941. . . . Reinthaller was brought before the Austrian People’s Court and accused of ‘high treason against the Austrian people’, with the three [defendants] labelled as being those most responsible for the Anschluss [Nazi Germany’s annexing of Austria–D.E.] . . . .”
Further analysis of the development of the FPO, notes that the party was founded by Third Reich veterans and Reinthaller’s successor was also an SS officer. ” . . . . The party was founded by the original Nazis in the 1950s and led by Nazis until the 1980s. . . . Reinthaller died in 1958 and was succeeded as Freedom Party leader by Friedrich Peter, another former Nazi Party member and an officer in the SS. Peter ran the party formally until 1978 and then played an informal role well into the 1980s. . . .”
Against the background of the genesis of the FPO, we note that a former speech writer for Jurg Haider is now the interior minister of Austria.
The FPO’s Herbert Kickl is described as the “mastermind” behind the electoral successes of the FPÖ that allowed it to enter into a coalition government.
In March, a police unit headed by a Freedom Party member raided the homes of four staffers and an office of the BVT (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz und Terrorismus Bekämpfung, i.e., Federal Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution and for Counterterrorism). The BVT is the bureau that deals with right-wing extremism.
The head of the BVT was fired several days after the raids. He had been the object of a virulent campaign by a website unzensuriert.at which is known as “the Austrian Breitbart”. The former editor in chief of unzensuriert.at is now Kickl’s communications director.
As the article points out, having the far right in charge of Austria’s and Italy’s domestic intelligence agencies doesn’t just put the anti-extremist operations of Austria and Italy at risk. Because of data-sharing agreements across Europe, they’re also learning what other intelligence agencies of other European countries (such as Germany) decided to share with Austria and Italy...
