One dictionary defines fascism as, “A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism.” The first fascist party was founded by Mussolini in Italy in 1915. Its etymology is traced to the Latin word meaning a bundle of rods tied around an axe, an ancient Roman symbol of authority. Today, the term, for many, immediately conjures up horrific images of storm troopers. But contemporary fascism has undergone a major wardrobe change. Could it happen here? Some see elements of it now with what is called populism, America First, coupled with a largely imagined past, Make America Great Again. The media are denounced as “the enemy of the people,” a phrase Stalin used. Critics of the Leader are bullied and insulted.
Chris Hedges is an award-winning journalist who has covered wars in the Balkans, the Middle East and Central America. He writes a weekly column for Truthdig.com and is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute. 12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #963 - Watergate and the Assassination of President Kennedy, Part 3"
As comparisons between the Watergate scandal and “Russia-gate” saturate the media (in the summer of 2017), the program reviews information about connections between the Watergate scandal and the assassination of President Kennedy. Nixon told aides that he didn’t want to release the White House tape recordings because he was afraid “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” might come out. Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman said in his book “The Ends of Power” that “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” was a code word in the Nixon White House for the assassination of President Kennedy. (It should be remembered that Nixon was in Dallas on 11/22/63, yet he told the FBI in February of 1964 that he had left Dallas two days prior to Kennedy’s assassination.)
When interviewed by the Warren Commission, Jack Ruby indicated that he had been part of a conspiracy to kill Kennedy and that he feared for his life. The Warren Commission turned a deaf ear to his desire to go to Washington and “spill the beans.” Gerald Ford (who succeeded Nixon as President and pardoned him of all crimes committed), Leon Jaworski (a Warren Commission counsel who was a director of a CIA domestic funding conduit and who was selected by Nixon to be Watergate Special Prosecutor) and Arlen Specter (another Warren Commission counsel who was Nixon’s first choice as his personal defense attorney in the Watergate affair.) were present at Ruby’s de facto confession.
It is interesting to contemplate the text of a letter that Jack Ruby smuggled out of prison. In the letter, Ruby hints that Nazis and Japanese fascists participated in the assassination of President Kennedy. Certainly, elements of what were to become the World Anti-Communist League (including the Asian Peoples Anti-Communist League) were involved...

He is a senior research associate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research and a research associate at the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics at the University of California, Berkeley.
The skeptics of minimum wage increases have been consistently shown to be wrong by very careful economic research... minimum wages - at least the kinds typically passed in the United States - tend to do their job. And what I mean by that is they tend to raise the wages of low wage workers and give them higher income; and they do so with very little to no negative costs in terms of employment losses." Dr. Woolhandler is a co-founder and board member of Physicians for a National Health Program, which is a non-profit research and education organization of 20,000 physicians, medical students and health professionals, who support single-payer national health insurance.
“Medicare for All would mean that everybody on the day they were born would get an insurance card that would pay for all medically needed care at the doctor or hospital of their choice. For doctors it would mean that everybody came with the same coverage; and we no longer had to worry about would the patient come back to see us for follow-up or would they decide that’s just too expensive… that’s not pie in the sky. Dave Emory, "For the Record #962: Watergate and the Assassination of President Kennedy, Part 2"
This broadcast continues our review of the profound connections between the Watergate scandal and the assassination of President Kennedy. For purposes of convenience and continuity, we recap an overview of some of these links from the description of FTR #961:
With Watergate being bruited about by our media in conjunction with the “investigations” into Trump and “Russia-gate,” we are taking time to dig into the archives and recap information about one of the factors that underlay the Watergate scandal–the Assassination of JFK.
The first of these programs excerpts The Guns of November, Part 3 (recorded on 11/15/1983) at length. From the description for that program:
Richard Nixon’s political demise came through the Watergate scandal. Nixon initiated the Watergate cover-up because he feared that “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” would come out. In his political memoir The Ends of Power, Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman wrote that the phrase “Bay of Pigs” was a code-word within the Nixon White House for the Kennedy assassination.
The program documents many of the areas of overlap between the Watergate and Kennedy investigations.
Nixon himself was in Dallas on November 22, 1963, as a lawyer for Pepsico (the parent company of Pepsi Cola.) Flying out of Dallas roughly two hours before Kennedy was slain, Nixon told the FBI in February of 1964 that the only time he had been in Dallas in 1963 had been “two days prior to the assassination.” This blatant lie is negated by a wire service interview Nixon gave in Dallas on November 21. Text of the interview ran in the New York Times and other major newspapers.
(A Pepsi Cola executive said that Nixon was present in Dallas at a company meeting when the announcement came that President Kennedy had been killed.)
Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski was selected by Nixon to replace the illegally fired Archibald Cox. Jaworski had previously served as a Warren Commission Counsel, while at the same time serving as director of a CIA domestic funding conduit.
Nixon named former Warren Commission member Gerald Ford to replace Vice President Agnew. Ford then replaced Nixon as President and pardoned him of all crimes he may have committed. . . .
. . . . The program discusses evidentiary tributaries connecting numerous other figures to the both investigations, including Watergate Judge John Sirica and Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis.
To attempt selective erasure of the all-important Watergate tapes, Nixon sought the assistance of Gordon Novel, a veteran intelligence agent, electronics expert, anti-Castro veteran and a figure in Jim Garrison’s investigation in New Orleans. At least one key tape was partially erased (the famous 18 1/2 minute gap), though no culprit was ever identified.
In this second broadcast of the series, we draw on Miscellaneous Archive Show M59–Richard Nixon’s Greatest Hits: Highlights of Richard Nixon’s Political Career. In that program (recorded on 5/1/1994), we reviewed an addendum to the original The Guns of November, Part 3. That addendum–recorded in June of 1972 (the 20th anniversary of the original Watergate break-in)–builds on the information from FTR #961.
After reviewing information about Nixon’s presence in Dallas, Texas on 11/22/1963, the program presents research by the late Penn Jones that maintains that Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover, among others, were present at a gathering at oilman Clint Muchison’s home the evening before the assassination–a meeting Jones felt was a planning session for the JFK assassination.
The bulk of this program is gleaned from Bernard J. Fensterwald’s Coincidence or Conspiracy. (Fensterwald was Watergate Burglar James McCord’s chief defense attorney.)
Among the many links between Watergate and the JFK assassination are the Warren Commission members and counsels who were tabbed by Nixon and/or other figures in the investigation to serve in various capacities:
a) Nixon first selected J. Lee Rankin to serve as Watergate Special Prosecutor. Rankin was subsequently tabbed to review the Watergate tapes and determine which would be released. Rankin was the Warren Commission’s liaison between the commission and both the CIA and the FBI. Rankin was a key proponent of the so-called “Magic Bullet Theory.”
b) Warren Commission counsel Arlen Specter, the author of the “Magic Bullet Theory”–was Nixon’s first choice as his personal defense attorney in the Watergate case.
c) Nixon also attempted to requisition Warren Commission member John J. McCloy as Watergate Special Prosecutor.
d) Former Warren Commission counsel Albert Jenner was Nixon’s first choice to serve as the GOP’s minority counsel before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Jenner later withdrew from that position.
e) John Dean selected former Warren Commission counsel Charles Shaffer as his attorney.
f) White House aide John Ehrlichmann tabbed former Warren Commission counsel Joseph Ball to represent him.
g) Nixon’s secretary Rose Marie Woods selected former Warren Commission counsel Charles Rhyne to represent her in a possible investigation of the famous 18 1/2 minute gap in one of the tapes.
h) Nixon Treasury Secretary John Connally’s obstruction of Jim Garrison’s extradition request for Sergio Archacha Smith.
Program Highlights Include:
1.The Nixon White House’s interest in the assassination attempt on George Wallace, which eliminated the Alabama Governor as a possible third-party threat to Nixon’s so-called “Southern Strategy.” Exactly who shot Wallace remains a mystery, but it was most assuredly NOT Arthur Bremer.
2. Two long-time Nixon friends and political associates’ sponsorship of the family of Sirhan Sirhan into the United States. Sirhan did NOT kill Robert F. Kennedy, however the creation of the false cover story to set up the patsy is important. Nixon, of course, won the 1968 election, after Robert Kennedy’s murder eliminated him as a front runner.
3. The role of former Lockheed director of security James Golden as chief of security for Nixon’s 1968 campaign. Many researchers of the RFK assassination believe that the actual shooter of Robert Kennedy was American Nazi Thane Eugene Caesar, who was employed at Lockheed’s Burbank facility, in an area involved with the U-2 spy plane project. (Oswald was also involved with the U-2.)
4. A veritable trove of Warren Commission letter and memoranda pertaining to the above figures involved in the Warren Commission and tabbed by the Nixon team for roles in Watergate that were missing from the National Archives.

Dave Emory, “For the Record #961 – Watergate and the Assassination of President Kennedy” Part 1 of 3
With Watergate being bruited about by our media in conjunction with the “investigations” into Trump and “Russia-gate,” we are taking time to dig into the archives and recap information about one of the factors that underlay the Watergate scandal–the Assassination of JFK.
The first of the programs excerpts ;The Guns of November,; Part 3 (recorded on 11/15/1983) at length. From the description for the program:
“Richard Nixon’s political demise came through the Watergate scandal. Nixon initiated the Watergate cover-up because he feared that “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” would come out. In his political memoir The Ends of Power, Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman wrote that the phrase “Bay of Pigs” was a code-word within the Nixon White House for the Kennedy assassination.
The program documents many of the areas of overlap between the Watergate and Kennedy investigations.
Nixon himself was in Dallas on November 22, 1963, as a lawyer for Pepsico (the parent company of Pepsi Cola.) Flying out of Dallas roughly two hours before Kennedy was slain, Nixon told the FBI in February of 1964 that the only time he had been in Dallas in 1963 had been “two days prior to the assassination.” This blatant lie is negated by a wire service interview Nixon gave in Dallas on November 21. Text of the interview ran in the New York Times and other major newspapers.
Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski was selected by Nixon to replace the illegally fired Archibald Cox. Jaworski had previously served as a Warren Commission Counsel, while at the same time serving as director of a CIA domestic funding conduit.
Nixon named former Warren Commission member Gerald Ford to replace Vice President Agnew. Ford then replaced Nixon as President and pardoned him of all crimes he may have committed. . . .
. . . . The program discusses evidentiary tributaries connecting numerous other figures to the both investigations, including Watergate Judge John Sirica and Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis.
To attempt selective erasure of the all-important Watergate tapes, Nixon sought the assistance of Gordon Novel, a veteran intelligencer, electronics expert, anti-Castro veteran and a figure in Jim Garrison’s investigation in New Orleans. At least one key tape was partially erased (the famous 18 1/2 minute gap), though no culprit was ever identified.

Dave Emory, “For the Record #961 – Watergate and the Assassination of President Kennedy” Part 1 of 3
With Watergate being bruited about by our media in conjunction with the “investigations” into Trump and “Russia-gate,” we are taking time to dig into the archives and recap information about one of the factors that underlay the Watergate scandal–the Assassination of JFK.
The first of the programs excerpts ;The Guns of November,; Part 3 (recorded on 11/15/1983) at length. From the description for the program:
“Richard Nixon’s political demise came through the Watergate scandal. Nixon initiated the Watergate cover-up because he feared that “the whole Bay of Pigs thing” would come out. In his political memoir The Ends of Power, Nixon aide H.R. Haldeman wrote that the phrase “Bay of Pigs” was a code-word within the Nixon White House for the Kennedy assassination.
The program documents many of the areas of overlap between the Watergate and Kennedy investigations.
Nixon himself was in Dallas on November 22, 1963, as a lawyer for Pepsico (the parent company of Pepsi Cola.) Flying out of Dallas roughly two hours before Kennedy was slain, Nixon told the FBI in February of 1964 that the only time he had been in Dallas in 1963 had been “two days prior to the assassination.” This blatant lie is negated by a wire service interview Nixon gave in Dallas on November 21. Text of the interview ran in the New York Times and other major newspapers.
Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski was selected by Nixon to replace the illegally fired Archibald Cox. Jaworski had previously served as a Warren Commission Counsel, while at the same time serving as director of a CIA domestic funding conduit.
Nixon named former Warren Commission member Gerald Ford to replace Vice President Agnew. Ford then replaced Nixon as President and pardoned him of all crimes he may have committed. . . .
. . . . The program discusses evidentiary tributaries connecting numerous other figures to the both investigations, including Watergate Judge John Sirica and Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis.
To attempt selective erasure of the all-important Watergate tapes, Nixon sought the assistance of Gordon Novel, a veteran intelligencer, electronics expert, anti-Castro veteran and a figure in Jim Garrison’s investigation in New Orleans. At least one key tape was partially erased (the famous 18 1/2 minute gap), though no culprit was ever identified.

As indicated by the title, this broadcast updates the high-profile hacks, at the epicenter of "Russia Gate," the brutal political fantasy that is at the core of American New Cold War propaganda and that may well lead to World War III.
(Other programs dealing with this subject include: FTR #'s 917, 923, 924, 940, 943, 958, 959.)
As we have noted in many previous broadcasts and posts, cyber attacks are easily disguised. Perpetrating a "cyber false flag" operation is disturbingly easy to do. In a world where the verifiably false and physically impossible "controlled demolition"/Truther nonsense has gained traction, cyber false flag ops are all the more threatening and sinister.
Now, we learn that the CIA's hacking tools are specifically crafted to mask CIA authorship of the attacks. Most significantly, for our purposes, is the fact that the Agency's hacking tools are engineered in such a way as to permit the authors of the event to represent themselves as Russian.
This is of paramount significance in evaluating the increasingly neo-McCarthyite New Cold War propaganda about "Russian interference" in the U.S. election.
We then highlight the recent conclusions of the French cyberintelligence chief (Guillaume Poupard) and his warnings about the incredible dangers of cyber-misattribution-the ease with which any random hacker could carrying out a spear-phishing attack, and his bafflement at the NSA's recent Russian attribution to the spear-phishing French election hacks.
Characteristic of the disingenuous, propagandistic spin of American news media on Putin/Russia/the high profile hacks is a New York Times article that accuses Putin of laying down a propaganda veil to cover for alleged Russian hacking, omitting his remarks that-correctly-note that contemporary technology easily permits the misattribution of cyber espionage/hacking.

One dictionary defines fascism as, "A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism." The first fascist party was founded by Mussolini in Italy in 1915. Its etymology is traced to the Latin word meaning a bundle of rods tied around an axe, an ancient Roman symbol of authority. Today, the term, for many, immediately conjures up horrific images of storm troopers. But contemporary fascism has undergone a major wardrobe change. Could it happen here? Some see elements of it now with what is called populism, America First, coupled with a largely imagined past, Make America Great Again. The media are denounced as "the enemy of the people," a phrase Stalin used. Critics of the Leader are bullied and insulted.

Dean Baker/Standing Up For Children
Ralph talks to renowned economist, Dean Baker, about the state of "free trade" in the era of Trump; and original Nader's Raider, Robert Fellmeth, joins us to advocate for a group of people who have virtually no say in the political process, children.
Dean Baker is an economist widely recognized for being one of the first to have predicted the crash of the U.S. housing bubble as early as five years before it actually happened. He is the co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington DC, which seeks to make economic issues accessible to the general public in order to promote meaningful debate on those issues. Dr. Baker is one of the leading critics of the so-called "free-trade" deals like NAFTA and the TPP and is the author of several books, including Rigged: How Globalization and the Rules of the Modern Economy were structured to Make the Rich Richer.
"We still have all sorts of barriers that make it extremely difficult for... a foreign trained doctor - even trained to very high standards... to practice in the United States. So we protect to a large extent our most highly paid workers. It was only the manufacturing workers, the less highly paid, less educated workers that were quite deliberately put in competition with their low-paid counterparts in the developing world." After helping Ralph investigate the Federal Trade Commission as one of those original "Nader's Raiders," Robert Fellmeth became an attorney for the Center for the Study of Responsive Law, Ralph's office in DC. In 1980, as a University of San Diego Law School faculty member, he founded that school's Center for Public Interest Law . He is also the founder of the Children's Advocacy Institute, one of the nation's premiere academic, research, and advocacy organizations working to improve the lives of all children and youth, with special emphasis on reforming the child protection and foster care systems and improving outcomes for youth aging out of foster care.

3-3:30 Michael Parenti, "The Supremely Political Court"

In February, 2017 the name of Michael Parenti and references to his 23 books and countless lectures are flooding the Internet. It appears that his writings on history, the demise of US democracy, capitalism and the rule of the one percent, fascism, patriotism and US First-ism that span the decades from the late 1960s to 2014 were meant to be read and used today.
Michael Parenti was born into a working class Italian family in East Harlem, New York City. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in political science at Yale in 1962. His academic career was cut short by his dismissal after he was arrested for protesting the US war on Vietnam. Parenti became an independent scholar, lecturer and author.
The 12 part TUC Radio series "Democracy What Went Wrong" with recordings of Parenti's lectures was produced in 1995. Parenti comments on major institutions such as the military, the CIA, media, corporations, universities, police, and the Supreme Court, offering suggestions on how to regain democratic control. We chose to rebroadcast Michael Parenti's extraordinary history and analysis of the Supreme Court since that court and a Trump nominee dominate the media in early 2017.
Over 20 years ago Parenti already pointed to the role of the court in concentrating wealth in the top 1 percent, and the way in which the Supreme Court expanded the power of corporations and laid the groundwork for what later became the Citizens United ruling of 2009. And Parenti shows how the Supreme Court began to give powers to the President in matters of foreign policy and national security that neither Congress nor the constitution had granted. He said: "... by Judicial Fiat the President could now do whatever he wanted in the absence of specific legislative prohibitions."
As of the date of this recording it still remains to be seen how the executive order issued by Donald Trump on January 27barring citizens from seven Muslim majority countries from entering the US for 90 days, all refugees for 120 days and indefinitely preventing refugees from Syria from coming to the US will be decided by the current Supreme Court of 2017. In a long series of programs and posts over the last four years, we have chronicled the re-institution of the OUN/B World War II-era fascists as the foundational element of the Ukrainian government. Of particular significance in that regard is the Nazification of the Ukrainian intelligence service, the SBU.
Among the recent developments in the operations of the OUN/B-related elements in Ukraine is the posting of a call for the eradication of Ukraine's Jews.
The call for a new Holocaust in Ukraine was made by Vasily Vovk - a senior officer in the SBU, former head of the SBU's investigative unit and head of the SBU's investigation into the MH17 probe. (Vovk's pronouncement casts further doubt over the MH17investigation.)
The SBU is also implicated in the bombing assassination of journalist Pavel Sheremet.
Next, we cover the latest attempt by Volodomyr Viatrovych and Ukraine's Institute of National Memory to purify Ukraine of any memories that might portray "nationalist" groups like the UPA (the military wing of the OUN/B) as a bunch of Nazi collaborators: Ukraine is investigating a 94-year-old Jewish WWII hero over the death of a UPA propagandist/Nazi collaborator back in 1952 while he was working for the NKVD at the recommendation of Viatrovych as part of a package of new decommunisation laws.
Viatrovych heads the institute for National Memory, the Ukrainian government agency that is implementing the total perversion of Ukraine's World War II history. The excesses of his department are being created under the aegis of "decommunisation."
"Decommunisation" isn't just going to cover investigations of Soviety-era incidents. As the following interview grimly describes, everyone is a potential target in Ukraine. And "decommunisation", or simply being associated with anything 'Russian' at all, is enough to bring violence or worse.
We then highlight an article about the anti-Roma pogrom that was just implemented by a small village and apparently approved of by the rest of the government. The article was written by a journalist who traveled to that region and queried the locals about their views of the Roma. Almost everyone he talked to hate the Roma with a passion. It also turns out most of them had little to no actual contact with their fellow Roma citizens, at least not knowingly since many Roma hide their ethnicity due to rampant job discrimination.
Most locals simply parroted the anti-Roma lessons they were taught as children. Anti-Roma Lessons that are even found in Ukrainian textbooks. It comes as no surprise that the Azov Battalion is joining in on creating a climate of fear and intimidation.
Next, we note that Ukraine is set to be the world's third largest food exporter some time in the next decade due to its incredibly productive arable land. This is undoubtedly a major factor in the push to incorporate Ukraine into the Western sphere of influence.

Ralph Nader called Richard Grossman the preeminent historian of corporations. In his writings and teaching Grossman warned us that unchecked corporate power would lead to the destruction of democracy. He said that the American revolution was fought less against the King but "against the crown corporations, the Hudson's Bay and East India Corporations." And he believed that it is time to remember that fight and assert sovereignty of the people over corporations and the corporate state.
In this speech Grossman provocatively calls for dismantling "the thousand largest corporations off the face of the earth."
Richard Grossman's research showed him that in the original intent of American revolutionaries corporations did not have rights, they only had privileges, and only those that we the people bestow on them. They were to be limited by a revocable charter that specified what they were allowed to do; it's board and officers were to be fully liable for any harms the corporation did; and they initially had none of the free speech rights that go along with person-hood.
If Richard Grossman were still alive today in 2017 he would be shocked to see that corporations and bankers from Exxon to Goldman Sachs, from General Dynamics to Lockheed Martin, from Wells Fargo to pipeline builder Energy Transfer, no longer are limited to purchasing influence by buying congress people one by one - but now own and run large parts of the government directly. This segment begins with an intriguing archival speech on the history of corporations that TUC Radio recorded in Washington DC. at the 1996 Teach-In organized by the International Forum on Globalization. The segment ends with two important projects Grossman worked on just before his death: A law to criminalize hydro-fracking and corporations as a class or group.
In the Preface to his 1993 pamphlet, 'Taking Care of Business,' Richard Grossman wrote:
"Corporations cause harm every day. Why do their harms go unchecked? How can they dictate what we produce, how we work, what we eat, drink and breathe? How did a self-governing people let this come to pass? - Corporations were not supposed to reign in the United States."
Richard died of cancer on November 22nd, 2011 - he was only sixty-eight. He was one of the lucid people who first described not just the history of corporations but the now global challenge to democracy and personal and state sovereignty that they pose.

This program begins with an analysis of connections between the Reinhard Gehlen Nazi spy organization and Gerhard Frey, a German fascist who was a major financier of the rise of Russian fascist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The segments also touch on Nazi agent H. Keith Thompson’s role as the P.R. person for Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother after the assassination of President Kennedy.
Much of the program focuses on the exploitation of the issue of immigration by neo-fascists around the world, as well as similarities between European neo-fascists and their counterparts in the United States. The broadcast also highlights attempts by American fascists to appear to be “Christians” or “conservatives” in order to broaden their political appeal. One of the most important points of discussion concerns the revival of the fascist pseudo-science of eugenics, exemplified by the mainstream backing for and acceptance of the racist best-seller 'The Bell Curve.'

Neoliberalism is an odd term when you think about it. It is hardly new and it is not particularly liberal. It has been a great economic success story-for the 1%. The detritus of neoliberalism litters the landscape from smashed unions to shredded safety nets, and deregulation of everything from airlines to banking to telecommunications. And how does one measure the human costs of shattered dreams and broken lives? The consequence? A backlash. Many working people are angry. Keep squeezing them and they will be prey for charlatans and demagogues who exploit their vulnerability and fear with scapegoating and false promises. As The Nation magazine observes, “Alongside growing economic inequality, we have suffered growing political inequality, with a Princeton study declaring that the influence of ordinary citizens on policy is ‘negligible.’ The United States,” The Nation says, is becoming “an oligarchy.”

This program begins with an analysis of connections between the Reinhard Gehlen Nazi spy organization and Gerhard Frey, a German fascist who was a major financier of the rise of Russian fascist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The segments also touch on Nazi agent H. Keith Thompson’s role as the P.R. person for Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother after the assassination of President Kennedy.
Much of the program focuses on the exploitation of the issue of immigration by neo-fascists around the world, as well as similarities between European neo-fascists and their counterparts in the United States. The broadcast also highlights attempts by American fascists to appear to be “Christians” or “conservatives” in order to broaden their political appeal. One of the most important points of discussion concerns the revival of the fascist pseudo-science of eugenics, exemplified by the mainstream backing for and acceptance of the racist best-seller 'The Bell Curve.'

Roldo Bartimole has been called a lot of things in his career, “gadfly,” “muckraker,” “curmudgeon,” “The Conscience of Cleveland.” Cleveland Magazine called him “the poor man’s Tom Paine.” He is a journalist, who for over thirty years put out his own bi-weekly newsletter called, “Point of View,” which took a critical look at the power structure in Cleveland, reporting on the wealthy’s control of the city’s agenda to the detriment of its working-class and poor residents.

Neoliberalism is an odd term when you think about it. It is hardly new and it is not particularly liberal. It has been a great economic success story-for the 1%. The detritus of neoliberalism litters the landscape from smashed unions to shredded safety nets, and deregulation of everything from airlines to banking to telecommunications. And how does one measure the human costs of shattered dreams and broken lives? The consequence? A backlash. Many working people are angry. Keep squeezing them and they will be prey for charlatans and demagogues who exploit their vulnerability and fear with scapegoating and false promises. As The Nation magazine observes, “Alongside growing economic inequality, we have suffered growing political inequality, with a Princeton study declaring that the influence of ordinary citizens on policy is ‘negligible.’ The United States,” The Nation says, is becoming “an oligarchy.”
