MONDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 26

12 - 1 Pema Chodron, "Noble Heart"
'A Self-Guided Retreat in Befriending Your Obstacles'
You can't get away from suffering. That's the good news, teaches Pema Chödrön. For at the core of your most painful experiences, perhaps more than anywhere else, you will find the seeds of your awakening.
On 'Noble Heart,' this beloved American-born Buddhist nun shows you how vulnerability is your greatest spiritual resource on the path through life's difficulties. The noble heart, Ane Pema teaches, is one that sheds its armor, opening itself fearlessly to both heartache and delight. Using special meditations and traditional teachings, Pema Chödrön leads you, step-by-step, toward a full realization of your true strength, the strength that can come only through embracing the pain of your own experience.
'Noble Heart' was recorded as it happened, within the peaceful shrine room of Gampo Abbey, Ane Pema's home on the cliffs of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Structured so that you can create your own retreat at home or at your meditation center, this complete curriculum brings you key teachings about how to recognize and cultivate the soft spot that is the gateway to your own noble heart.
Here is the promise of the Four Limitless Ones-maitri (loving-kindness), compassion, joy, and equanimity-and down-to-earth advice about how to draw strength from them every day, in any situation. Here, too, are the treasured teachings about the Six Paramitas: the Buddha's own map of the journey to enlightenment. Learn how to connect with your innately unlimited friendliness, and how it can grow big enough to contain the entire world.
With four complete meditations, unique heart teachings, and Ane Pema's trademark humor, 'Noble Heart' invites you to discover for yourself the compassion and wisdom that have established her as a leading voice in American Buddhism. Includes more than nine hours of direct teachings from this revered acharya (master teacher).
Highlights:

The four great catalysts of awakening, and how to begin integrating them into your life today
The basic goodness that nothing can take away from you
Authentic Tibetan Buddhist chants for generating gratitude and compassion
Where to find and how to build your inner strength and trust
The maitri meditation that multiplies love
How the Three Noble Principles can enrich everything you do
Why you need your soft spot to awaken spiritually
When "don't know" mind is wiser than all the teachings in the world
The Three Lords of Materialism-and how to diffuse their power
The antidote to aggression
A melting practice you can use to undo isolation and anxietyPart 1 of 12: The Ground of Bodhichitta Practice
The continual practice of bodhichitta. Aspiring practices. The three marks of existence. What ego really is. The three noble principles. Homework assignment.

1-2:30 Robert Thurman, "Making the World We Want' Part 1 of 6
'A Passionate Examination of Buddhism's Potential to Revolutionize the Course of Humanity'

Columbia University professor Robert Thurman stands alone among scholars of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. He was the first Westerner to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, and he is the renowned translator of many seminal Buddhist texts, including 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead.'
On 'Making the World We Want,' you will hear a very different Thurman as he speaks candidly on what he considers the most urgent issue of our time: how Buddhism is now poised to revolutionize the entire course of humanity.
In this passionate, incisive, and often hilarious joyride of the mind and spirit, Thurman explores: mindful communities as "enlightenment factories" and how they have sparked "inner" revolutions throughout history; the Buddha's philosophy of life, liberty, and the pursuit of real happiness; how compassion and nonduality spur social action; the vision of sacred texts for the future of humanity; and much more.
"The Buddha founded a quiet revolution," asserts Thurman, "a total reorientation of the habits of individuals and entire societies." On 'Making the World We Want,' you will learn how each of us can participate in this monumental revolution today.

2:30-3:30 Van Jones: "Breaking Out of Our Resistance Bubble"
Tuesday, November 20, 2018

Van Jones is a New York Times bestselling author, public speaker, and host of The Van Jones Show on CNN. This special edition of Insights at the Edge re-broadcasts Van's powerful session from Sounds True's Waking Up in the World online event. In this in-depth interview, Tami Simon speaks with Van about the necessary meeting between spiritual practice and social activism. They discuss the currently fraught political climate and why it's essential for everyone to break out of their respective bubbles to engage with people with diverse views. At the same time, Van emphasizes the need to combat rising hate and why we all need to stay true to what we value most in life. Finally, Tami and Van talk about the possibility of broad societal change and how spiritual people can catalyze that movement.

1-2:30 Clarissa Pinkola Estes, "Women Who Run With the Wolves" Part 2 (concluding)
''Myths and Stories About the Wild Woman Archetype'
First published three years before the print edition of 'Women Who Run With the Wolves' made publishing history, this original audio edition quickly became an underground bestseller. For its insights into the inner life of women, it established Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés as one of the most important voices of our time in the fields of Jungian psychology, myth, and women's mysteries.
Drawing from her work as a psychoanalyst and cantadora ("keeper of the old stories"), Dr. Estés uses myths and folktales to illustrate how societies systematically strip away the feminine spirit. Through an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. Estés helps listeners rediscover and free their own wild nature.
The magical storytelling, myths, and commentary on 'Women Who Run With the Wolves 'continue to inspire a new level of self-knowledge among listeners young and old.

2:30-3:30 Mary O'Malley::"What's in the Way Is the Way"

Mary O'Malley is an author, counselor, and acknowledged leader in the field of spiritual awakening. With Sounds True, Mary has published 'What's in the Way Is the Way: A Practical Guide for Waking Up to Life.' In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Mary discuss the eight "spells" that keep us feeling separate from life-as well as the remedies that bring us more fully into the energetic flow of existence. They speak on the need for curiosity and the role it plays in uniting our attention with our present-moment experience. Finally, Mary explains her understanding of the awakening process and the skills one can cultivate to come into a robust and joyous alignment with life itself. (60 minutes)

Tami's Takeaway
One of the worst feelings for me is helplessness. Mary teaches that "life is destined to bring up what is bound up." This podcast brought up for me how I push away feelings of helplessness. According to Mary, "what's in the way is the way," and we can become what she calls "tightness detectives" to see how we clamp down in certain situations and resist what we don't want to feel. When instead we meet our feelings with curiosity and spaciousness, we discover the free flow of aliveness and the absolute trustworthiness in every experience.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 28

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #1028 - Miscellaneous Articles and Updates"

Introduction: Updating previous paths of inquiry, as well as introducing new ones, the program begins with a bit of both-discussion of the murder of Saudi journalist and possible Saudi and U.S. intelligence officer Jamal Khashoggi. A development which resonates strongly with previous discussion of the so-called "Arab Spring" (read "Muslim Brotherhood Spring"), the corporatist economics of Ibn Khaldun and the Brotherhood, and Grover Norquist and Karl Rove's Islamic Free Market Institute (which figures prominently in the post-9/11 Operation Green Quest investigation into al-Qaeda and terrorist financing), Khashoggi's death has occasioned howls of outrage, much beating of breasts and tearing of hair in normally Saudi-friendly confines both inside, and outside of the U.S. ...

2:30-3:30 Dan Sheehan at "ET Let's Talk" (October 18)

I found this late (Friday night November 23) and it is the first Dan Sheehan posting in several months. It contains some pre-November election information on the battle against the Dakota access pipeline and the effort to secure the Lakota Indians' right to vote in which battles Sheehan has been the legal point man. But he is now free from his successful attempt to represent Chase Iron Eyes who was facing prison for "leading" the water protectors in the Dakota Access Pipeline conflict. Sheehan, who has participated in all or nearly all of the major legal cases of the past few decades is now concentrating and bringing generally unknown information and activities on the major issues of our time which he identifies as global climate change, corporate fascism, and the control of extra terrestrial intelligence information by the national security infrastructure which sees it as a national security threat and thus preventing a 'careful, intelligent and sage analysis.'

BEHIND THE SCENES
Angel Fields, our GM, Introduces our New Program Director
Kevin Fleming

I am delighted to announce that the Program Director search has reached a conclusion. After interviewing the final four candidates submitted to me by the LSB PD Search Committee, I felt Kevin was strong in areas the station needs in its Program operations. I look forward to working with Kevin to improve our communications with programmers, develop an on-boarding process for new programs, annual reviews with programmers, manage content for our web page, help set the bar of excellence, station promotions, develop and make resources available for programmers. Alan will be working with Kevin to help him get acclimated and acquainted with the station. We will announce a few all station meetings for January soon.

Kevin Fleming's entertainment business experience is vast and varied. It includes major market radio programming and operations, record company artist repertoire and development, artist management, entertainment content creation, and internet publishing.

Kevin's radio experience includes operation management, program management, air personality and programming consultant for urban, urban adult, urban oldies and community non-commercial radio. His expertise in the recording industry encompasses directing promotions, executive level management of artist & repertoire, as well as major label assignments as vice president and general manager. Fleming started his record career as West Coast Regional Promotion Manager for Island Records where his executive talent was recognized by Chris Blackwell, and he was rapidly promoted Vice President of Black Music. After a brief stint at Third Stone Records under the direction of Dick Rudolph, Kevin was pursued by super- producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to become Vice President and General Manager of Perspective Records where he was instrumental in achieving gold and platinum-selling results on new and developing artists.
Kevin Fleming

Kevin's early radio career highlights include programming, personality, and operations management stops at WCLK, WAOK and WIGO-Atlanta, WXAG-Athens, Georgia, WWDM-Sumter/Columbia, South Carolina and KGFJ-Los Angeles where he was the youngest major market program director in the country. He later served as PD/OM of KACE/KRTO-Los Angeles, the ground-breaking, award- winning and much beloved urban adult radio outlet. Fleming also consulted radio stations in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. KMOJ-Minneapolis is a listener supported non-commercial station. Kevin overhauled the stations imaging, programming, marketing, sales and fundraising efforts resulting in a significant increase in listenership, sales revenue, and listener donations.

Kevin lectures and shares his knowledge of radio programming and the music industry at schools, conventions, and seminars as a radio, internet, and entertainment industry expert.

"To paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr. 'we must use time creatively... The time is always ripe to do right'. This is the perfect time for me to bring my experience to Pacifica's KPFK. I want to thank the KPFK Station Board, Search Committee and General Manager, Anyel Fields for entrusting me with the programming of this institution." - Kevin Fleming

12-1 Live with Z. Budapest (phone)
Our recent rebroadcast of our initial interview with 'Witch' Z. Budapest (from 1978) created a large response, so we asked her to stay up late to talk with us. Zsuzanna Budapest broke into the news some decades ago by being arrested for reading the Tarot, which case eliminated the law, making her the last person to be so victimized. As a radical feminist, she formed the non-profit Susan B. Anthony Coven Number 1 of the Dianic Women's Tradition to help promote the Goddess' sacred work and includes the Dianic University Online, the Goddess Festivals, other events and retreats, books, videos, lectures, and CDs, a cable television program, a monthy Goddess magazine and more. Still very active, she has written many books, including 'The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries,' 'The Goddess in the Office,' 'The Goddess in the Bedroom,' 'The Grandmother of Time,' 'Summoning the Fates,' 'Grandmother Moon,' and an 'Autobiography' - some translated into Spanish. The second volume of her Autobiography, "Z's Second Destiny" is due to be published this year. She has spent much time eliminating the ignorant stereotype of witches as hags in pointed black hats and flying brooms worshipping horned devils. Recently it was found that there are now more witches or pagans in the USA than Presbyterians! https://www.christianpost.com/news/witches-outnumber-presbyterians-in-the-us-wicca-paganism-growing-astronomically-227857/

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 21

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record - "Send in the Clowns: Reflections on the Kavanaugh Circus"

"A frivolous society can only achieve dramatic significance through what its frivolity destroys." - Edith Wharton

The largely inept questioning of Brett Kavanaugh about his youthful, drunken sexual behavior eclipsed Kavanaugh's participation in far more serious, and altogether lethal activities during his pivotal role with the Bush administrations, primarily that of George W. Bush: " . . . . Kavanaugh, now President Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, had an ordinary-sounding title: staff secretary. But he wielded extraordinary influence as the adviser responsible for screening, reviewing and editing documents delivered to Bush, interviews and documents show. . . . But no justice in recent memory has worked as intently as Kavanaugh at the highest levels of the nation's political machinery, scholars said. . . . Documents and interviews show that while Kavanaugh was not a policymaker, he was directly involved in helping the White House manage a wide array of sensitive matters, including the war on terrorism . . . . 'It put Kavanaugh at the center of every political and policy decision at the Bush White House,' said Peter Irons, professor emeritus at the University of California at San Diego and author of several books about the Supreme Court. 'He is exactly the kind of person that the legal conservative movement wants on the court.' . . . . Kavanaugh was responsible for managing the process that helped shape the president's thinking and fueled the Bush administration agenda. 'He was everywhere,' said Michael Gerson, a speechwriter in the Bush administration and now a syndicated columnist at The Post. . . . 'Virtually every piece of paper had to pass through the staff secretary's hands,' Rove said. . . ."
Kavanaugh's wife also had deep ties to the George W. Bush administration. " . . . . Ashley Estes Kavanaugh worked as media relations coordinator for the George W. Bush Presidential Center from 2009-2010; worked as Director of Special Projects for the George W. Bush presidential Foundation from 2005 to 2009; was President George W. Bush's personal secretary from 2001 to 2005; was an assistant in the White House from 2001 to 2005; and worked on the Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign from 1996 to 2000. Her time with Bush dates to his work in Texas as governor there. She was assistant to Governor George W. Bush from 1996 to 1999. She attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1994 to 1997. . . ."

1-2 Benjamin Hett, "How Hitler Happened"
Program #HETB001. Recorded in New York, NY on October 19, 2018.

The post-WW1 Weimar Republic in Germany was the height of European civilization. Its scientists and scholars led the world. Its Bauhaus architecture was the rage. Its arts featured such luminaries as Fritz Lang, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill and Thomas Mann. Yet, out of this modern democracy sprang Nazism, German fascism, and one of the most barbaric regimes ever. How did Hitler happened? It is one of the most important questions of history. What happened in Germany has disturbing resonances for our own time. Fascist-like regimes are taking power in many countries. We ignore disturbing signs at our peril from torchlight parades in Charlottesville with crowds chanting, "Jews Will Not Replace Us" to a synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh to the murder of African-Americans in a church in Charleston. What can we learn from the past to insure it doesn't happen again?

Benjamin Hett is the author of Burning the Reichstag, Crossing Hitler and The Death of Democracy. He is a professor of history at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and holds a Ph.D. in history from Harvard and a law degree from the University of Toronto. He grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, and now lives in New York City.

3-3:30 Dennis Martinez, "Restoring the Forest - The Indian Way"
Edited Archival - Re-released on Nov. 13, 2018 - on day six of the fire that destroyed Paradise

Even though the so far most deadly fire of Northern California is over 100 miles away it fills the air with an acrid smoke that has obscured the sun for days now. The town of Paradise went up in flames.
It's a little over 20 years ago that I recorded the documentary that you will hear again. My visit to Mountain Grove, Oregon, opened up a part of Native American history and culture and forest practice. That gave me hope that maybe we could undo and heal the damage that Western European settlement and industrial forest practice had done to the peoples and the lands of what is now California.
In Washington, DC, Trump is sending out tweets that the fires are due to poor forest management and he threatens to cut federal aid, implying that all would be OK if there was more logging and mining and drilling going on. Trump has that power and may yet exercise it since nearly 60 percent of California forests are under federal management, and another two-thirds under private control.
When Spanish Conquistadors rode up the West Coast they were astonished to see that they entered forests that looked like parks with widely spaced trees. Church and military records show that in the early 19th century California's forests were carefully tended.
The catastrophic wildfires of today were extremely rare. California Natives used controlled fires to create these parks but the use of fire was outlawed by the Settlers from 1850 on. There is now talk about bringing back controlled burns - but how complex, interwoven with intimate knowledge of the web of life that practice is, was beginning to dawn on me when I set out to Mountain Grove for a three day visit with Dennis Martinez.
Dennis Martinez is of O'odham/Chicano heritage, and helps traditional communities with the restoration of ancestral lands. He is well loved writer and lecturer. He is a seed collector, vegetation surveyor, restoration tree thinner and ethno-botanist.

2:30-3:30 From the Vault #008 "American Soldier"

This week we celebrated Veterans Day in the United States. Our troops, meanwhile, are still fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Pacifica has always had a unique relationship with soldiers and the military. Whether it was Pacifica's founding by conscientious objector Lewis Hill, the Network's coverage of the Vietnam War by sending the first American journalists to that country to witness the intense fighting and relaying the war experience back to the country, by covering the Winters Soldier Investigation, or today's conscientious objectors and returning veterans, Pacifica has always covered war unlike any other media in America and created an environment for soldiers to speak more freely and openly. This week, on From the Vault, we hear the voices of the American soldier. Because the American G.I. does not always fit the image our government has created. Produced, written, & edited by Christopher Sprinkle.

Ronald Siegel is a longtime assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and the author of many books. With Sounds True, he has created the audio program 'Healing Through Mindfulness: Effective Practices for Chronic Health Conditions.' In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Ron talk about the psychological contributing factors to chronic pain—especially in the back and spine. Speaking on his own brush with debilitating pain, Ron explains the ways that stress and other psychophysiological components can instigate everything from insomnia to irritable bowel syndrome. Ron and Tami also discuss how to have frank conversations around chronic pain, as well as how to make friends with negative emotions like fear and anxiety. Finally, Ron shares his thoughts on the increasing willingness of the medical community to embrace mindfulness meditation.

By Mike Ludwig, Truthout www.truthout.org (October 24)

2-3 Jack Herer "The Emperor Wears No Clothes"
An amazing, impassioned, and informative talk by one of the leaders of the marijuana freedom movement and author of 'The Emperor Wears No Clothes.' Jack was a frequent guest on the show, but this talk before a live audience captures the emotional urgency, courage, and informative educational nature of Jack's presentations to a 'Reefer Madness' society. He promotes hemp as a substitute for conventional sources of medicine, paper, fiber, and fuel. He explains that, although he was a conservative Republican, he pointed toward the hypocrisy of a nation which supports the tobacco industry, uses polluting fuels, and helps in the destruction of the world's rainforests. He also tells the story of how he found the U.S. Government's Dept. of Agriculture 1942 film 'Hemp for Victory' though the Nixon administration denied it existed. Recorded in Santa Cruz, August 12, 1990. 3-3:30 The Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature"
'Under the Skin We're All Kin: Reading the Minds of Animals"
Calling someone an “animal” means they’re less than human – not worthy of respect, rights, or even of life itself. But in truth — and in biological fact — human beings ARE animals. Scientists continue to find that intelligence and what we call “consciousness” appear to saturate all of nature. Clearly it’s high time to think differently about just what it means to be an animal. Can we know what it’s like to be other-than-human? How can we see into the minds of animals? Visionary naturalist, author and conservationist Carl Safina says that the first step is paying attention and observing. And, he suggests, if we had humility, we’d have everything.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 14

12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #1026-The So-Called “Arab Spring” Revisited, Pt 2"

In FTR #’s 733 through 739, we presented our view that the so-called Arab Spring was a U.S. intelligence operation, aimed at placing the Brotherhood in power in Muslim countries dominated either by a secular dictator or absolute monarchy.

Continuing analysis from our previous program, this broadcast delves further into the networking between the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda. Against the background of the occupation of Idlib Province in Syria by Al-Qaeda, we highlight the apparent role of Morsi’s government and the Muslim Brotherhood in the events surrounding the 2012 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya.

The overthrow of Khadafy in Libya was an outgrowth of the so-called Arab Spring, as was the precipitation of the civil war in Syria. Of particular significance is the fact that the GOP-led investigations of the Benghazi attack led directly to both the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s e-mails and the decisively significant FBI tampering with the 2016 election, as well as the alleged “hack” of Hillary’s e-mails!

An Egyptian newspaper published what were said to be intercepted recordings of Morsi communicating conspiratorially with Muhammad al-Zawahiri, the the brother of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of Al-Qaeda. Much of this checks out with information that is already on the public record.

Note the networking of GOP Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham with Khairat El-Shater of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood while he was in prison, as well as the alleged links between the Egyptian Brotherhood and the cells involved in attacking the U.S. Embassy in Libya.

What we may well be looking at is a gambit along the lines of what has become known as the October Surprise–collusion between the Iranian Islamists and George H.W. Bush/CIA/GOP to (among other things) destabilize the Carter administration and 1980 re-election campaign.

In addition, we wonder about a deal having been struck to have Al-Qaeda fight against Bashar Assad in Syria, while avoiding attacks inside the U.S.?

Of primary focus in the material below is Khairat El-Shater (transliterated spellings of his name differ.) El-Shater:,,,

2-3 Edward Said, "U.S. Interventions in the Middle East"
Program #SAIE035. Recorded in Seattle, WA on May 08, 2003.

The current occupant of the White House has said, “The Middle East is a troubled place. There are a lot of bad things happening in that part of the world.” Indeed. But why is it troubled place and why are bad things happening there? There is no mention of Washington’s role. Actions have consequences. U.S. invasions, occupations, coups and economic warfare in the Middle East have significantly contributed to turning the region into a disaster area. Washington has aligned itself with feudal despotic regimes. Decades ago, the U.S. identified Middle Eastern oil as crucial to its designs to dominate the world. Fast forward. The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq has to be one of the greatest war crimes in history. Its ramifications continue to reverberate throughout the Middle East and beyond. And Palestine? Things are as bleak as ever.

This never before broadcast archival program marks the 15th anniversary of Said’s death.

Edward Said, internationally renowned Columbia University professor, practically invented the field of post-colonial studies. His great work, Orientalism has been translated into many languages and is widely used in colleges and universities. The New York Times called him, "one of the most influential literary and cultural critics in the world." As one of the few advocates for Palestinian rights in the U.S., he was the target of vilification, death threats and vandalism. The Economist said he "repudiated terrorism in all its forms and was a passionate, eloquent and persistent advocate for justice for the dispossessed Palestinians." He was a trenchant critic not just of Israeli policies, but also of Arafat, the corrupt coterie around him and the despotic Arab regimes. He felt strongly that intellectuals had a special responsibility to speak out against injustice, challenge power, confront hegemonic thinking and provide alternatives. His friend Noam Chomsky said of him, “Said was one of the most remarkable and influential intellectuals of the last half century. Much of his immense effort and talent was dedicated to overcoming the insularity, prejudice, self-righteousness, apologetics that are among the pathologies of power and defending the rights of the victims.” His memoir Out of Place won the New Yorker Book of the Year Award. He published two books of interviews with David Barsamian, The Pen & the Sword and Culture & Imperialism. Edward Said died in New York on September 25, 2003. 3-3:30 The Bioneers - Revolution from the Heart of Nature 'Vice to Virtue - Carbon Farming'
How does a virtue become a vice? How does a basic building block of life turn into a threat to life? And how do you turn that vice back into a virtue? In this half-hour we visit with two unlikely pathfinders who are helping to revolutionize farming. Calla Rose Ostrander and John Wick of the Marin Carbon Project are taking carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it back where it belongs: in the soil. In so doing, they’re also revitalizing the soil, conserving water, and building agricultural resilience. Scaling up these revolutionary regenerative methods can offset the climate destabilization, which that threatens to confound agriculture and endanger our food supply.

For The Record #1025 The So-Called "Arab Spring" Revisited, Part 1

In this program, we review and present information about the Muslim Brotherhood and the phenomenon that became known as "The Arab Spring."
The Muslim Brotherhood is an Islamic fascist organization, allied with the Axis in World War II. After the war, the organization gravitated to elements of Western intelligence, where it proved to be a bulwark against Communism in the Muslim world.
It is our view that the Brotherhood was seen as useful because of its military offshoots (Al-Qaeda in particular) were useful proxy warriors in places like the Caucasus and the Balkans and because the Brotherhood's corporatist, neo-liberal economic doctrine was in keeping with the desires and goals of the trans-national corporate community.
(The Afghan Mujahedin were a direct offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and the successful war conducted by that group was a successful manifestation of "Brotherhood" as proxy warriors. Of course, Al-Qaeda grew directly from the Afghan jihadists.)

In FTR #'s 733 through 739, we presented our view that the so-called Arab Spring was a U.S. intelligence operation, aimed at placing the Brotherhood in power in Muslim countries dominated either by a secular dictator or absolute monarchy.
In FTR #787, we solidified our analysis with definitive confirmation of our working hypothesis presented years earlier.

About the Muslim Brotherhood's economic doctrine: " . . . . . . . In Muslim liturgy, the deals cut in the souk become a metaphor for the contract between God and the faithful. And the business model Muhammad prescribed, according to Muslim scholars and economists, is very much in the laissez-faire tradition later embraced by the West. Prices were to be set by God alone-anticipating by more than a millennium Adam Smith's reference to the 'invisible hand' of market-based pricing. . . . The Muslim Brotherhood hails 14th century philosopher Ibn Khaldun as its economic guide. Anticipating supply-side economics, Khaldun argued that cutting taxes raises production and tax revenues, and that state control should be limited to providing water, fire and free grazing land, the utilities of the ancient world. The World Bank has called Ibn Khaldun the first advocate of privatization. His founding influence is a sign of moderation. If Islamists in power ever do clash with the West, it won't be over commerce. . . ."
Ronald Reagan resonated with the Brotherhood's economic doctrine when promoting his supply-side economics: "President Reagan, in his news conference yesterday, cited a 14th century Islamic scholar as an early exponent of the "supply-side" economic theory on which his Administration bases many of its policies. An authority on the scholar later said that the reference seemed accurate. . . . Responding to a question about the effects of tax and spending cuts that began taking effect yesterday, Mr. Reagan said the supply-side principle dated at least as far back as Ibn Khaldun, who is generally regarded as the greatest Arab historian to emerge from the highly developed Arabic culture of the Middle Ages. . . ."

The U.S. view on the Brotherhood and Islamism in general was epitomized by CIA officer Graham Fuller, who ran the Afghan Mujahadin: " . . . . . . . Fuller comes from that faction of CIA Cold Warriors who believed (and still apparently believe) that fundamentalist Islam, even in its radical jihadi form, does not pose a threat to the West, for the simple reason that fundamentalist Islam is conservative, against social justice, against socialism and redistribution of wealth, and in favor of hierarchical socio-economic structures. Socialism is the common enemy to both capitalist America and to Wahhabi Islam, according to Fuller. . . .'There is no mainstream Islamic organization...with radical social views,' he wrote. 'Classical Islamic theory envisages the role of the state as limited to facilitating the well-being of markets and merchants rather than controlling them. Islamists have always powerfully objected to socialism and communism....Islam has never had problems with the idea that wealth is unevenly distributed.' . . . ."
Next, we present the reading of an article by CFR member Bruce Hoffman. Noting Al Qaeda's resurgence and Al Qaeda's emphasis on the Syrian conflict, Hoffman cites the so-called "Arab Spring" as the key event in Al Qaeda's resurgence. " . . . . The thousands of hardened al-Qaeda fighters freed from Egyptian prisons in 2012-2013 by President Mohammed Morsi galvanized the movement at a critical moment, when instability reigned and a handful of men well-versed in terrorism and subversion could plunge a country or a region into chaos. Whether in Libya, Turkey, Syria, or Yemen, their arrival was providential in terms of advancing al-Qaeda's interests or increasing its influence. . . . It was Syria where al-Qaeda's intervention proved most consequential. One of Zawahiri's first official acts after succeeding bin Laden as emir was to order a Syrian veteran of the Iraqi insurgency named Abu Mohammad al-Julani to return home and establish the al-Qaeda franchise that would eventually become Jabhat al-Nusra. . . ."

Hoffman notes that Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State were, at one time, part of a unified organization: " . . . . Al-Qaeda's chosen instrument was Jabhat al-Nusra, the product of a joint initiative with al-Qaeda's Iraqi branch, which had rebranded itself as the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). But as Nusra grew in both strength and impact, a dispute erupted between ISI and al-Qaeda over control of the group. In a bold power grab, ISI's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announced the forcible amalgamation of al-Nusra with ISI in a new organization to be called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Julani refused to accede to the unilateral merger and appealed to Zawahiri. The quarrel intensified, and after Zawahiri's attempts to mediate it collapsed, he expelled ISIS from the al-Qaeda network. . . ."

An Egyptian newspaper published what were said to be intercepted recordings of Morsi communicating conspiratorially with Muhammad al-Zawahiri, the the brother of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of Al-Qaeda. Much of this checks out with information that is already on the public record.

The Egyptian government sentenced more than 500 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, to the resounding condemnation of Western countries, including the U.S. What we were not told was why. THIS appears to be why. Note the profound connection between the Muslim Brotherhood government of Morsi and Al Qaeda, information that supplements what the Bruce Hoffman paper discusses: " . . . . Morsi informed Zawahiri that the Muslim Brotherhood supports the mujahidin (jihadis) and that the mujahidin should support the Brotherhood in order for them both, and the Islamist agenda, to prevail in Egypt. This makes sense in the context that, soon after Morsi came to power, the general public did become increasingly critical of him and his policies, including the fact that he was placing only Brotherhood members in Egypt's most important posts, trying quickly to push through a pro-Islamist constitution, and, as Egyptians called it, trying in general to 'Brotherhoodize' Egypt. This second phone call being longer than the first, Zawahiri took it as an opportunity to congratulate Morsi on his recent presidential victory-which, incidentally, from the start, was portrayed by some as fraudulent-and expressed his joy that Morsi's presidency could only mean that 'all secular infidels would be removed from Egypt.' Then Zawahiri told Morsi: 'Rule according to the Sharia of Allah [or 'Islamic law'], and we will stand next to you. Know that, from the start, there is no so-called democracy, so get rid of your opposition.' . . ."
Note the networking of GOP Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham with Khairat El-Shater of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood while he was in prison. " . . . . The call ended in agreement that al-Qaeda would support the Brotherhood, including its international branches, under the understanding that Morsi would soon implement full Sharia in Egypt. After this, Muhammad Zawahiri and Khairat al-Shater, the number-two man of the Muslim Brotherhood organization, reportedly met regularly. It is interesting to note here that, prior to these revelations, U.S. ambassador Anne Patterson was seen visiting with Khairat al-Shater-even though he held no position in the Morsi government-and after the ousting and imprisonment of Morsi and leading Brotherhood members, Sens. John McCain and Lindsay Graham made it a point to visit the civilian Shater in his prison cell and urged the Egyptian government to release him. . . ."

Might there be some relationship between the Graham, McCain/Shater contacts and the evolution of the Benghazi/Clinton emails/Trump election nexus?
Note, also, that Morsi and Zawahiri/Al-Qaeda jihadis were allegedly involved in the Behghazi attack that, ultimately, led to the Benghazi hearings, the Hillary Clinton e-mail non-scandal and Donald Trump's ascent: " . . . . Along with saying that the Brotherhood intended to form a 'revolutionary guard' to protect him against any coup, Morsi added that, in return for al-Qaeda's and its affiliates' support, not only would he allow them to have such training camps, but he would facilitate their development in Sinai and give them four facilities to use along the Egyptian-Libyan border. That Libya is mentioned is interesting. According to a Libyan Arabic report I translated back in June 2013, those who attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, killing Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were from jihadi cells that had been formed in Libya through Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood support. Those interrogated named Morsi and other top Brotherhood leadership as accomplices. . . ."
