'Decoding the Emotional, Psychological, and Spiritual Messages That Underlie Illness'
Part 3 (concluding): Practice Session: Listening to the Body
Body scan.  Talking with your body.  Bodymind appreciation.

1:30-2:30 "Halloween With a Witch"
A classic interview I did with Z Budapest, a Witch who talks about the real meanings of Halloween.  Recorded live on KPFK October 10, 1978.

"Zsuzsanna Emese Budapest was born in Budapest, Hungary, during a big winter storm on January 30, 1940. Her mother, Masika Szilagyi, was a medium and a practicing witch who supported herself and her daughter with her art, as a sculptress. Masika’s themes always celebrated the Triple Goddess and the Fates, and Zsuzsanna, “Z,” grew up respecting and appreciating Mother Nature as a god.

"The poverty of postwar Europe and political oppression under the Russian occupation made Z fiercely political, so when the Hungarian Revolution broke out in 1956, she took her destiny into her own hands and became one of those sixty-five thousand political refugees who left the country, mostly young workers and students like herself. She finished high school in Innsbruck, graduated from a bilingual gymnasium, and won a scholarship to the University of Vienna where she studied languages.

"Z emigrated to the United States in 1959, became a student at the University of Chicago, married, and gave birth to two sons. In Chicago she studied with Second City, an improvisational theatrical school, the only one in the country at that time.

"Her family’s spiritual tradition, however, started seeping back into her life, and she practiced solo worship of the Goddess at her home altar in her backyard.

"When she entered her Saturn cycle at the age of thirty, she became involved with the women’s liberation movement in Los Angeles and became an activist herself, staffing the Women’s Center there for many years.

"There she recognized a need for a spiritual dimension so far lacking in the feminist movement and started the Women’s Spirituality Movement. She founded the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number l, the first feminist witches’ coven, which became the role model for thousands of other spiritual groups being born and spreading across the nation. She wrote The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries(Weiser Publishers, 1989) which was originally published in 1975 as The Feminist Book of Lights and Shadows. This book served as the first hands-on book to lead women into their own spiritual/Goddess heritage. Z was arrested in 1975 for reading Tarot cards to an undercover policewoman. She lost the trial but won the issue, and the law against psychics was struck down nine years later. (See WitchTrial.net)

"Z has led rituals, lectured, taught classes, given workshops, written articles tirelessly, and published in hundreds of women’s newspapers across the country. She has powerfully influenced many of the future teachers and writers about the Goddess.

"Today Z lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, traveling a lot, giving workshops and lectures, but always making time to smell the roses. She is the star of her own cable TV show called 13th Heaven and acts as the director of the Women’s Spirituality Forum, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a monthly lecture series in the Bay Area about the Goddess, spirituality retreats, and annual spiral dances on Halloween. Z founded and sponsors the Dianic University Online, a vagina-friendly online school for Dianic Wicca and Goddess studies for women. California Institute for Integral Studies recognized recently Z’s contribution to Women’s Spirituality Movement.

12:30-1:30 Anne Lamott,  “Radical Self Care Changes Everything”
Anne Lamott is the celebrated author of many books of fiction, essays, and memoirs. Her works include ‘Bird by Bird,’ ‘Hallelujah Anyway,’ and ‘Crooked Little Heart.’ In this special edition of Insights at the Edge originally recorded for The Self-Acceptance Summit, Tami Simon speaks with Anne about acts of "radical self-care" and how they are essential for anyone's well-being. Anne talks about self-acceptance as an innately feminist concept, especially around issues of body image and self-esteem. Finally, Anne and Tami discuss how it is necessary to fully accept oneself before being able to show up for others, and why modern society often argues the opposite.   From Sounds True “Insights at the Edge Series”  For free download of audio and/or transcript go to

1:30-2:30 Lauren Walker: The Energy Medicine Yoga Prescription
Lauren Walker is a certified energy medicine practitioner, teaching assistant to Donna Eden, and one of the originators of Energy Medicine Yoga, which she teaches internationally. With Sounds True, Lauren has released ‘The Energy Medicine Yoga Prescription.’ In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Lauren discuss the ideal ways that energy moves through the body and how that flow can be manipulated to help heal a number of conditions. Lauren highlights specific practices for the treatment of insomnia and gut issues, as well as a method for listening to "meridian pulses" to diagnose unknown pains. Tami and Lauren also speak on how the development of self-acceptance in conjunction with Energy Medicine Yoga can help us reclaim pleasure and joy in our daily lives. Finally, Lauren leads listeners in "The Wake-Up," a short practice designed to readjust the natural flow of our subtle energy. From Sounds True ‘Insights at the Edge’ series.  2:30-3:30 Stephen Bezruchka “Making America Healthy Again”
The U.S. pays more for health care than any other country yet has shamefully poor results. People are paying through the nose for their hospital stays, surgeries and prescription drugs. An MRI in the U.S. costs five times what it costs in Australia. Instead of quality affordable health care we are building absurdly expensive F-35s, submarines and aircraft carriers. And there is a cool $ trillion for nuclear weapons. Our spending priorities are upside down. Every other industrialized country has universal health care. Since the 1970s surveys have shown most people in the U.S. want a single-payer, universal health care program. But Washington says: That’s off the table. So even though the public wants it, our so-called representatives, except for Bernie Sanders and a few others, are not considering it. Maybe we should look to Slovenia for inspiration.
Stephen Bezruchka is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. He worked for many years as an emergency physician in Seattle. His particular areas of research are population health and societal hierarchy. He has spent over 10 years in Nepal working in various health programs, and teaching in remote regions. He is author of numerous articles and essays. He is a contributor to ‘Sickness and Wealth,’ a book on the effects of global corporatization on health. WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 1
12-1 Dave Emory, "For the Record #976 - Operation Mind Control: Subverting the Political Will"
Continuing analysis of the intelligence community’s mind control programs, this broadcast details one of the most insidious applications of the mind control discipline–the programming of entire new personalities into people, which could only become operational after a pre-conditioned cue was administered.

The program begins with discussion of the use of hypnosis to enable military and intelligence couriers to commit large amounts of information to memory in such a manner as to prevent disclosure when the subject was not hypnotized.

One of the CIA’s mind control couriers was a famous model and World War II pin-up girl named Candy Jones.

Ms. Jones–one of America’s premier models, a political liberal and the wife of broadcasting legend Long John Nebel–was subjected to a rigorous mind control program in which a bigoted, fascist personality was programmed into her under the alternate personality Arlene Grant.

Ms. Jones was conditioned to hate blacks, Jews and others, via a personality conditioned into her by a programmer. After marrying Nebel, a liberal, Ms. Jones was apparently programmed to kill herself, throwing herself off a cliff in the Bahamas.

Of particular note is the sexually-charged, anti-black racism with which Ms. Jones–as “Arlene Grant”–was imbued. Against the contemporary political backdrop, this is especially significant.

The balance of the discussion is a hypothetical “prequel” to discussion of the Peoples Temple of Jim Jones. With riots in many of this country’s urban ghettos in the 1960’s and violent acts by so-called “black militants” garnering significant headlines in the 1960’s and 1970’s, there was support in the intelligence and applied psychology fields to study the social behavior and psychology of African-Americans. Particular emphasis was on studying the brains of black people, to see if there was some innate inclination toward violent behavior on the part of a significant portion of the African-American community.

The Nixon administration and the California gubernatorial registration of Ronald Reagan were supportive of the project, with the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration enlisted to help finance the project, for which an abandoned Nike missile base was to be requisitioned as an operational center.

CIA psychologist Louis Jolyon West was one of the prime movers in the apparently aborted launching of the UCLA Institute for the Study and Prevention of Violence. (West had been Jack Ruby’s psychiatrist, as well as an early experimenter on the effects of LSD.) In our next program, we examine the possibility that the UCLA center was actually supplanted with the Peoples Temple of Jim Jones, an apparent CIA operation and extension of the intelligence community’s mind control operations.

1-2  The Ralph Nader Radio Hour
“Who Owns the Media / Monsanto’s Whitewash”
Former FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson, gives us a perspective on the media landscape from Johnson to Trump. And investigative journalist, Carey Gillam, explains how, thanks to chemical companies like Monsanto, we’re all probably eating the pesticide, Round Up.
Nicholas Johnson is best known for his controversial term as a dissenting Federal Communications Commission commissioner in the Johnson/Nixon era. His book from that time ‘How to Talk Back to Your Television Set’ is just as relevant now as it was then, even in the Internet Age with its critique of media consolidation and the manufacturing of news. He currently teaches at the University of Iowa College of Law with an emphasis on communications and Internet law, and since 2006 has posted over 1000 blog essays. He is included in ‘The Yale Biographical Dictionary of American Law’ as one of 700 “leading figures in the history of American law, from the colonial era to the present day.”‘
“All television is educational television. The only questions is, ‘What is it teaching?’ And it certainly is not teaching the values of a democratic society with the information that citizens need.”
Carey Gillam is a veteran journalist, researcher and writer with more than 25 years of experience in the news industry covering corporate America. Since 1998, Ms. Gillam’s work has focused on digging into the big business of food and agriculture. As a former correspondent for Reuters’ international news service and current research director for consumer group U.S. Right to Know(, Ms. Gillam uncovers both the risks and rewards of the evolving new age of agriculture. Her new book ‘Whitewash: The Story of a Weedkiller, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science’ ‘‘(https://islandpress.org/book/whitewash) – just out this month – details the harm that pervasive pesticide use is wreaking on human health and the environment.
“For decades, Monsanto has worked very, very hard to manipulate the science, to suppress science by independent researchers that shows harm and to promote or push its own positive science, it’s own science that says it’s safe. And what we’ve seen in the documents that have come out recently – Monsanto’s own internal documents – shows them working to basically put forward fraudulent papers that carry the names of independent scientists that look to be credible and unbiased but actually are written or manipulated or drafted or directed by Monsanto’s people.”
Former FCC Commissioner Nicholas Johnson, gives us a perspective on the media landscape from Johnson to Trump. And investigative journalist, Carey Gillam, explains how, thanks to chemical companies like Monsanto, we’re all probably eating the pesticide, Round Up.

Initially heard on KPFK Saturdays, 10am

2-2:30  Renegade Economists Marilyn Waring, Kate Raworth and Elinor Ostrom (Part ONE)
This is the beginning of a TUC Radio mini series on how to resist the demands of permanent economic growth and protect the earth, indigenous communities, local agriculture and women. Here first is the archive edition of Who’s Counting, Marilyn Waring on sex, lies and global economics based on the audio of the film by Terre Nash.
Marilyn Waring was shocked and dismayed when she learned that all countries that are members of the UN are forced to keep their books and design their budgets under the United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA). This GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market and recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace and to the preservation of the environment.
At age 22 (in 1974) Marilyn Waring became the youngest member of the New Zealand Parliament. She chaired the prestigious Public Expenditures Committee and became familiar with the Gross Domestic Product system and decided to disclose its pathologies in a film, her teachings at AUT University in Auckland and really her life as a feminist economist. The film, “Who’s Counting” traces her quest to explore how the fate of women and of the earth are impacted by the deadly pursuit of economic growth.
Marilyn Waring is best known as the author of a book on women in the world economy entitled: “If Women Counted” to this day a persuasive and vivid argument against endless economic growth.  From TUC Radio http://www.tucradio.org

2:30-3  Renegade Economists Marilyn Waring, Kate Raworth and Elinor Ostrom (Part TWO)
Marilyn Waring’s 30 Year Effort to Dismantle the GDP

Safe drinking water counts for nothing. A pollution-free environment counts for nothing. Even some people – namely women – count for nothing. This according to the United Nations System of National Accounts, the SNA, that sets the standard and imposes economic and budgetary decisions for almost 200 countries.

The SNA produce the GDP, the Gross Domestic Product that allegedly measures well being within a country. However war and catastrophes deforestation and mining show up as beneficial for the economy under the GDP.

Marilyn Waring, former New Zealand M.P., now professor of public policy at Auckland University, writer, and goat farmer, explained this in her book: Counting for Nothing. She gave a 30 year update at the University of Alberta, Canada, on November 18, 2016. This is an excerpt of her 55 minute speech.

Waring spoke at the Parkland Institute, at the University of Alberta. Parkland exists to counteract the dominance of the marketplace tat led to expanded corporate power. And to preserve the understanding of Canada as a caring and sharing society.

This is part two of a TUC Radio miniseries on Renegade Economics and how to resist the demands of permanent economic growth and protect the earth, indigenous communities, local agriculture and women.   From TUC Radio http://www.tucradio.org

3-3:30 Renegade Economists Marilyn Waring, Kate Raworth and Elinor Ostrom (Part THREE)
Kate Raworth “Why it’s time for a new version of human prosperity”
Kate Raworth came to international attention in 2017 with the publication of her most recent book: Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think like a 21st-Century Economist. She critiques the Gross Domestic Product system of accounting – including the so-called Green or sustainable growth models.

In Kate Raworth’ doughnut model the goal is to raise the well being of humans trapped inside the doughnut hole, while placing limits on climate change and pollution that are near or have crossed the outer circle of the doughnut.

Kate Raworth is teaching at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, and at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Over the last two decades she has worked as Senior Researcher at Oxfam, and as a co-author of the United Nation’s Human Development Report.
Kate Raworth has written extensively for media including The Guardian, The New Statesman, Newsweek, and Wired, and has done programs with BBC Radio 4, The World Service, ABC and NPR, as well as television with Thom Hartmann, Laura Flanders, CNN, Al-Jazeera, BBC, and CBC.    From TUC Radio http://www.tucradio.org
